Going GREEN! Crazy phenom???

I've always been environmentally conscious. Lately there is so much buzz about going green and while I think it is a VERY worthy cause, I'm afraid that people are going to be desensitized by all the commercialization of "going green".

It's an excellent message and good for people to know that our daily actions can and do hurt the earth. I just don't want to see the message lost.

Do you think it's a fad or do you think people will really wake up and take small steps to help our lovely earth?

Seriously, every talk show, magazine, advertisement practically is shouting "go green", won't people get sick of this?

well, how else do you educate those who don't already know better? you have to "advertise" the idea to reach the masses. obviously there hasn't been enough public awareness campaigns because people still litter and pour used oil into sewer drains etc...personally, i think it's not enough, not soon enough (a little less negative than too little, too late).

It is an odd sort of explosion. I really wonder what the tipping point was. An Inconvenient Truth? Possibly linking global warming to Katrina.

I think it can't be bad although it might not be enough. I was talking to an energy specialist recently who was pointing out how much energy huge TVs use ... and computers ... are people going to make the real lifestyle sacrifices that are required if we are really going to reverse this trend?

people are willing to sacrifice / relinquish some of their personal freedoms and privacy so we can continue to monitor potential, suspected and/or alleged terrorists, so my thoughts are that people would be willing to make less intrusive changes in their lifestyles in order to save the planet. maybe i am too idealistic.

I'm not sure that analogy works. Our freedoms are intangible and most people take them for granted. But you drive your car and watch your TV every day ... most people do ... and if you just bought a huge plasma TV are you going to watch it or put it away?

ah yes, but who's paying for the ads?? Few will ever shell out the money for an ad out of altruism. They're saying "go green" to buy their product- which half the time the "green" is a marketing ploy. Like 7 up's "natural" slogan.

Going green may be ag reat idea, but in a back to real basics grass roots kinda way- something not as easily found in magazines...

Everybody seems to be gone crazy about going green and saving the planet. Don't you have anything else to worry about? I think peoples' lives are so great that they are creating these really stupid problems like global warming... Some people are worried that arctic ice is melting. Guess what they only show it when its summer and the ice is gone. All this stuff is crazy. talk about making the regular light bulbs illegal. What about the mercury in CFL bulbs? Do you even know that humans cannot change the climate of the Earth, they are just going to hurt US economy by prohibiting drilling oil by Gulf of Mexico. Global oceans create more greenhouse gases than you would imagine. Also over 10k years ago Antarctica had a tropical climate, So I suggest to all the green enthusiasts to relax and not worry about the Earth , mother nature will balance everything. P.S. if we were headed towards an environmental cataclysm all your efforts will add only 2-3 years over a period of 100 years.

It's a phase. We went through it 20 years ago, which is why we have domestic recycling. I wonder what will catch on this go-round - re-useable water bottles (I've yet to see one in the gym)? longlife lightbulbs? compact cars (doubtful...didn't last after past energy crises)? There will be some token legacy of this fad.

pp, just wondering what part of the country your from (honestly, I'm curious). I'm from the northwest and here many people already drive compact cars (or ride their bikes when they can) and use reusable water bottles...

I'm curious about how different regions of the US (or anywhere else for that matter) view "going green"

Yeah it makes me sad that some people here in this thread and in general think this is just a fad or just don't care or whatever. I actually was raised up being environmentally aware...for example growing our own produce/buying at the farmers market, composting, driving smaller cars and only making one trip when making errands to save fuel, composting, reusing, etc etc. I live in Northern California, but unfortunately, there are still many many wasteful ppl here.

Even if it's a fad, I think it's still important to save on resources. I took a class a few years ago and learned there are only 37 years worth of fossil fuels left...sad.

I think maybe the PPs are just too young to know how these things turn out, or have somehow managed to hold onto their youthful idealism despite lots of evidence to the contrary.

To the northwesterner - I'm in New York. I don't think my views are necessarily representative of my region - after all, when we're in the throes of a Green phase, everybody's into it - but the only thing I really notice people doing is the whole locavore thing, trying to improve the quality of the produce they put on their own plates.

The peertrainer lounge is chock full of age discrimination. It's sad if you view optimism, effort, and hope as youthful characteristics. If more people thought the same way wouldn't the problem be solved? Perhaps "enlightened" individuals like yourself who view this issue as a lost cause are the reason why these kinds of changes aren't easily being sustained.

I'll just remind you of the definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. This is another round of greenification for Big Biz to temporarily capitalize on, it too shall pass...would love to be proven wrong but not hopeful.

I'm glad to see it. I've come to realize that we breathe and absorb a LOT of chemicals, which end up in our bodies. Check out ewg.org, and their "Skin Deep" section that rates cosmetics, lotions, baby shampoo, etc. I think the chemicals we're exposed to may well be what's behind the increase in chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, depression and autism. I'm in the process of cleaning up ..what I eat, and absorb through my skin, and breathe in. it makes a real difference! : )

Drum Roll Please......

Being environmentally conscious is very admirable...Go get em' tiger. Having said that, YES it can be manipulated and used as a marketing ploy which is disgusting.
Very similar to any company that uses "Christian" in their title. Or puts one of those Jesus freak fish things in their ads. Wrong Wrong Wrong.

They are not remembering WWJD. That stand for "Who would Jesus Do" right?
