Types of yoga to lose weight

I keep reading that Gwyneth paltrow lost her baby weight by doing yoga. I also read that Jennifer Aniston keeps her weight down by doing yoga but I've done yoga and there is absolutely no way I even get my heart rate up. I heard Ashtanga is more of a workout - haven't tried it. Any info anyone?

I do power yoga/ashtanga and YES it is a workout, gets my heartrate up, makes me sweat buckets and gives me an overall good workout. I can't say that I lost tons of weight with it though because I have never done it exclusively - I usually do it in addition to strength training and cardio.

I haven't lost weight from yoga, but I do hatha and it absolutely gets my heart rate up! I think you can make almost any type of yoga more vigorous by increasing the time you hold difficul poses, and moving to the next one quickly without resting. Even though I haven't lost any weight from doing it, I have muscle definition where I once didn't (even with weight training), and my core/balance is excellent now.

Ashtanga Yoga

I have practiced yoga in various forms for over 20 years. Ashtanga will definitely give you a workout.

I've always assumed I shouldn't count on yoga to help me lose weight...If you follow the yogic lifestyle, you will get healthier and likely will lose weight, but I wouldn't think of it as a path to weight loss, necessarily.

to the 9:18 poster. The yoga lifestyle will definitely make you healthier and if you are way off track with your lifestyle there may be some initial weight loss. However, if you are doing certain types of yoga (power or ashtanga) you can definitely lose weight. Birkum yoga may lead to weight loss but you need to be sure it's not just water weight.

i agree with the above posters -- ashtanga/power yoga will definitely get you fit!

i've lifted weights for years, and i have to say that yoga is the one exercise through which i got the quickest and clearest muscle definition in the shortest period of time. i always get compliments on my arms, and i know that it's from yoga and not from weight lifting!
