Question about Heart Rate Monitors and BMR

Theoretically if I wear my heart rate monitor for 24 hours, will the calorie expenditure shown be roughly the calories I've burned for the day? If it says I burned 2500 calories from normal everyday movements, does that mean I can use that as a guide to figuring out how many calories I should be taking in every day?

theoretically, yes. but I find it to greatly exaggerate caloric output, especially if doing anything in the heat. If I used up that many calories, I guarantee you I would not be fat (but I am...). I think the HRM is accurate for specific exercises (ie, it reads lower calories burned than the charts do for me...), but not for regular activities. But I speak only from my observations and not from a scientifically knowledgeable view.
