Healthy food choices when shopping at Wal Mart?

I read in a log that this person had gone to Wal Mart to shop for healthy food choices. this is a great idea, because their prices are so cheap. I'm looking for ideas- and am I better off shopping at whole foods and buying 365 brand products?

Walmart does have deals! The salad bags go on sale 2/$4, the canned beans are a great price, and the produce can be good too. Lettuce heads, tomatoes, apples, onions, potatoes, etc. Those are usually at great prices. I shop at Publix (don't know if you have Publix near you, its kind of an upper-end grocery store..tends to be a bit more expensive than walmart) But I still get amazing deals at the expensive stores. I just look for the sales! Right now they have bagged lettuce 99cents/bag and red seedless grapes 1.99/lb. They also carry the organic items that Walmart doesn't have.

However wal-mart does nothing for the general psychological and moral health of anyone, so how can it ever be a "healthy" choice?

well it's certainly healthy on the budget for some of us.

Just curious-

"However wal-mart does nothing for the general psychological and moral health of anyone, so how can it ever be a "healthy" choice? "

what???
Have I missed something lately about Walmart being a bad company?

Wal-mart kills small business. Without small business, we all work for a few monopolies that are designed to pay many people very little and pay the few people at the top very much. Have you heard the the "gap" between the rich and poor is getting greater and greater?

Don't let that little smiley-face fool you. Wal-mart is not good for anyone.

WAKE UP! How long will America keep sleeping?

2:16, where have you been? You've missed a lot!

I'm a big Walmart shopper! I know the store fairly well. Here are somethings:

eggs are usually just over a dollar
big thing a low fat or fat free yougurt for smoothies is 2.50 or so
Frozen fruit for smoothies are like 1.75
12 grain bread is 1.50
feta is pretty cheap
petas pretty cheap
bag a chicken breast are like 6.00 (don't get any othe rmeat there)
box of their brand of whole grain crackers are 1.00
their brand of crystal like like 2.20 something
baby carrots always cheap
bag of edames is like 2.00

all in all i find their prices are always just a little cheaper. :)

It's called captialism. That's what our economy is based on. Economies of scale and so forth. Generally you can shop at a smaller shop and get better, fresher, more authentic... whatever or you can shop at a big chain. I don't personally ever see a mom and pop shop go out of business cause Walmart came to town the stores it really hurts are Target, Shopko, Walgreens, Hy-Vee, Kroger... etc. The big stores that don't like the go as cheap in competition at Walmart.

And at least where I live Walmart pays better than the other local big name grocery/shopping places. So I'm sorry but I shop at Walmart I save myself money so I can spend more on other things... or heaven forbid save some money, and I ignore the propoganda machine.

I live in small town and we just got a Walmart about 2 years ago. (nearest other one is the next town over) I have not seen one small business close down since the walmart opened. The 2 fresh produce stores are still open, the fruit stands on the side of the road are still there every weekend, the swartz truck still makes it's weekly deliveries, etc.

Walmart also offers benefits- vacation, health insurance- to their employees. Most of the other stores around here do not.

You can choose where you work so If you do not like the pay dont work there. They also employ several older, slow, and non educated people which most other companies wont regardless of EO. I save tons of money there so therefore I do not need such a high paying job simply to make ends meet

How about this?

As a woman, this is unacceptable to me. Unacceptable, but hardly suprising.

I do think that Wal-Mart is a bad company in its employment practices. Maybe reading employee accounts, something like "nickeled and dimed" would make employment seem less rosy to those who don't actually work there. At the same time, not all individual Wal-Mart's are the same. I've been in some urban ones that I would never go back to, and one in rural Arkansas that is clearly the mainstay of its community.

As for food, there are things I can get there that I can't get at other grocery stores! These include:

inexpensive (non-organic) cartons of egg white
protein bars in bulk
La Tortilla factory low-carb tortillas
also, they often have Horizon organic skim milk when other local stores are out

Well, I don't live in Philly, and feel very fortunate to have a great Walmart only 25 miles away. Otherwise I would be stuck with no access to any organic foodstuffs at all, certainly not milk. My salads would be limited to iceburg lettuce. I would not have access to Organic whole grain flours, wild Salmon, or organic eggs from free ranging hens (Something I am willing to spend my dollars to support) Although I like to save money as much as anyone else, it is not just about that. Other stores, of any size, are not offering me the healthful (to me or to the environment) choices that Walmart is willing to. Walmart is not perfect, and no, I can't get all my needs met there, But I can't get all my needs met anywhere, and I am healthier today because of our Walmart.

5:23 poster, the governent has killled your tobacco industry????How many people has the tobacco incustry killed??? It is called roll with the changes-we have to drop the bad habits (we keep simply because it is economically painful to consider the alternativ)e or future generations suffer. For years govt subsidies and tax breaks kept our Detroit automakers afloat while foreign car makers relied on creating a better product to stay in business. Painful now for Detroit-should have chosen the economically harder but smarter choices in the past-now the whole region suffers. Well, at least China still wants to buy our cars (but guess where those are built??? You can bet GM isn't producing them on US soil.)

This is a support group not a political website. To me, everything at Walmart is a good deal. Items I buy that I find to be much cheaper there vs. other stores: 93% lean ground turkey breast, frozen chicken breasts, soy milk, walnuts, almonds, and Diet V-8 Splash.

I know wal-mart is taking america away from the small-town, local owned markets etc. But I am poor, and they are affordable. With gas prices up I can not afford to shop anywhere else. I have 30-50% on my groceries there, not to mention household items and necessities like socks and sports bras.

OP you mentioned Whole Foods as the other option - I live in Boulder where they originated, so people are obessed here and I have to say their marketing lures me in a few times a month - I love shopping there but can only afford to pick up a few special things every once and a while - we call it "Whole Paycheck". And they are still a big corporation - you are not supporting the local economy (recent monopoly issues w/ wild oats buy-out).

if the local business would have competitive prices, I would shop there, but they don't. The economy is in a recession right now, I plan on keeping the $2.00 difference on toilet paper I save shopping at Walmart. That $2.00 helps feed my children.

you want a healthy moral and phys, go see a shrink. If you want to save money on tampons, toilet paper, canned goods, frozen foods, and oil changes, go to walmart.

I don't shop at Walmart either. I refuse to on Ethical grounds. I have no problem paying the extra few dollars to shop somewhere else. There are plenty of other discount retailers about, where I can often finds thing cheaper than wally world anyways.

Someonebuys products like free range eggs at walmart, to support free range practices? Well, you're using your money to support Walmart, and personally walmart has too many negative practices that I don't think Walmart should be a vehicle to support ANYTHING. I also don't really trust the organic label of any large scale corp, especially something like Walmart.

And they may offer benefits, etc., however, having worked there during university, I can tell you, that benefits often only come to "full time" employees, and Walmart has a habit of keeping employees 1-2 hours below the full time requirement so that they can deny them benefits. (And yes, in younger, dumber days I worked there, now, I never would.)

Anyone on here is likely paying for internet access. I would easily forego internet access to avoid having to shop at walmart. I would go to a food bank before going to walmart. I don't believe people need to shop at Walmart- they might convince themselves of that, but I don't believe it for a second. Saving on other things, cutting back on other expenses, or not buying other "luxury" items can EASILY save you money so you don't need to save two dollars at walmart.

I've heard all sides of the Walmart debate and I still shop there. In my area There are 4 Wal-mart Super Centers all within 5 or less miles of eachother. No businesses have shut down because of Wal-mart, except for way-over-priced Eagle Foods many years ago. In fact, at the same intersection kitty corner from Walmart just opened "Valley Produce", which touts the best produce, meats, etc. in the area. Can't imagine they'd open in that location if Walmart was such a threat.

Bottom line: This economy sucks and we need to save money where ever we can.

Since our walmart put in a gas stations, we have some of the lowest priced gas in the area. before that, our gas was the highest. I am glad Walmart is in town, it keeps all the other places from charging an arm and a leg for everything. Groceries included. You can't beat their clearance prices on kids clothes either!!

Everyone has good points, but the OP wasn't asking if YOU shop at wal-mart or if you believe in thier moral standards.

I purchase sea food there. They also have a pre-made bbq chicken for sandwiches that I like. Oh and a lot of turkey products like hot dogs and burgers. Some of those are good depending on the brand. In my town, that is the only place to buy jenny-o products. I have found whole wheat pastas, wraps, and breads there as well. Happy shopping, where ever you shop!

Read the book "The Ethics of What we Eat" by Peter Singer. He digs deeply into where our food comes from - Walmart is a big player in the book.

even books are a matter of opinion. You can take facts and twist them to confirm what your thought is. Doesn't mean the author stated all the facts, just the ones that confirmed his opinion.

for the staples walmart provide the exact same nutrition at a lower cost - ex: progresso soup is $1.32 at walmart where i live - its 1.95 at the grocery stores and while they dont sell progresso at whole foods simiar soups that are "organic" are 3+. I will splurge on some organic produce and if i ate meat it would be free range, etc. - but things that are already canned/boxed dont really make a difference to me.

True - I guess it depends on what you're buying. I wouldn't buy meat/dairy and I'd be wary of the produce at Wal-Mart - but if you're buying that junky processed stuff in boxes and bags you will probably save money there.

so you assume that everyone buys only the junky processed stuff? I have a gluten allergy and find walmart has a wonderful selection of gluten free items. Not to mention my children get 100% pure juice from walmart at a much cheaper price. i wouldn't call 100% juice junky, I call it a smart decision.

walmart has cheap prices but small selection of healthy food. its good for somethings...the real deal is the asian stores...we have huge asian supermarkets here called super H and you can eat really healthy for cheap and find many foods you didnt even know existed that are healthy and really tasty...If you can cook there are even more options...go and explore...
