Any good lunch ideas?

I'm a guy 6'3" 210lbs and have a big appetite. Lunch is one one my big probelms (foot long subs, cheesburgers, greasy food and just eating too much). If I eat a salad, I still feel hungry - so I need something healthy and filling. Any ideas?

Lunch idea

Have you seen SuperSize me? Unreal. Avoiding McDonalds, fried food in general is the first step to take

I haven't seen Supersize me, but get the idea. I would say that eating the same of anything will be bad for you. If you ate only turkey for a month straight I'm sure a few a number of your lab readings would be way off. You wouldn't feel well and I'm sure you would throw up.

Re: lunch idea

Yes but don't you think he dieted before that documentary so he'd have even more of an adverse reaction? I think that's why the lab tests were so crazy.

RE: Lunch Ideas

I wouldn't be surprised. I think we all like to blame someone else for our own faults. Blaming McDonalds is an easy target.

RE: lunch Idea

Had a turkey, bacon and ham club, Orange Mango Nantucket Nectars and a banana. I feel full, but not stuffed. What are the thoughts out there on bacon? Is a little bacon every now and then a good idea?

Your lunch was prob about 700 calories - for someone about your size, that's about 1/3 of your day which is perfect! Sure the bacon is fatty but being fit is really just burning more calories than you take in.

You should never feel stuffed

People just tend to overeat all the time .. we are so use to giving our body so much food it craves a large amount to feel satisfied but in reality we have more then enough way before we finish our large meals... hopefully after a few days of eating less you will not have an issue with feeling full

The Lunch Connundrum

I'm not as big as you and just a salad leaves me hungry too! Try eating a salad with other clean foods, for example, a tortilla with some chicken and salsa and maybe some non fat or reduced fat cheese. Or, salad with turkey chilli and a piece of whole grain bread. I really like the Body For Life balance, where you eat protein, healthy carbs at each meal, I only wish he recommended more fruit and veggies...

I totally agree with that last post - get some protein in your salad! Also, you could try lowering the ratio of refined carbs in the meal. For example, if you eat a sub, make it open-face by throwing out the top half of the bun.

My favorite standby (to buy) is a Subway sandwich. I get 6 inch Turkey on Wheat-with a bit of mustard, lettuce, onion, tomatoes, cucumbers and green peppers. Leave the mayo, ranch and other dressings off. Even a 12 inch sub would be ok for you. I lost 80 lbs by eating alot of Subway Veggie Delights (6 in) and Baja Fresh Ensalada salad with chicken and w/o dressing or cheese, extra pico de gallo. Unfortunately I gained those 80 lbs back when I stopped eating them very often and eating (and drinking) alot of other things instead.

turkey bacon is amazing! it's only like 35 calories a piece, less than a gram of fat and lots of protein. and they taste so much better than regular bacon!

++ on the turkey bacon. It works wonderfully wherever regular bacon or proscuitto is called for. I daresay I prefer it and it cooks up a lot nicer.

For healthy (er) lunches I stick with Subway and their low-fat subs. There are a few local places, but for the major fast food chains I do better there than anywhere else. I have had to start packing lunch to keep from getting bored. I need a bit of protein, as much fiber as I can manage and I try for 8 oz of veggies (but that's kind of hard sometimes). The fiber and the protein are what keep you feeling full though and a salad alone doesn't have enough to keep anyone satsified for long.

Fill up that salad with satisfying low fat proteins like chicken breasts or other lean meats, even whole grains like soy nuts and brown rice make great additions. Add a little crunch with a few slivered almonds or chopped walnuts and spike it with dried cranberries.

bacon

Try back bacon. It's more like ham, but is only 30 calories and 1 gram of fat for 2 slices. Yummy!

good lunch ideas

I eat a huge salad each day at lunch and mix up what I put in it. I have recently been adding shrimp to the mix to get more omega3's and DHA.

I agree with the turkey bacon idea. I have been using it in different things and love it. But I really prefer butterball brand. I think it was 40 cal a slice compared to another brand I think farmland that is 20 cal a slice but the butterball brand is more moist and flavorful. I will buy it from now on. I also take and divide it into 2 slice portions and freeze them individually so it is easier to work with.

Have you tried making a couple of open faced wasa crisp sandwiches? I am amazed how one of them lasts me around 6 hours before I get hungry again. I use 1 piece of wasa and spread it with Philly fat free cream cheese, 1 oz is 30 cal and plenty for one piece. Then I buy sliced turkey and roast beef from the deli and use an ounce of each.

When I make my own sub type sandwich I always scoop out the center of the bread to save calories yet still get texture. Also instead of mayo or oil just use a bit of balsamic vinegar. Maybe a tablespoon of lite mayo -45 cal. Then find the low fat meats and cheeses if you like.
Soup can help to fill a person up too. But not always what you want in the summer.
You could make turkey meatballs and make meatball subs. But beware when you get your ground turkey some of them are really high in fat. I usually grind my own chicken.
When I make sanwiches I love to add veggies. If you have to take your lunch with you somewhere you could cut these up and place them in separate baggies and assemble it when you are ready. I use tomato, onion, cucumber, dill pickle, pepperchini or wax banana peppers, and a healthy lettcue. It makes a huge sandwich and very filling.
Hope that helps

Substitute Burger

I'm not sure if you like or eat soy....but I've been making this for lunch:

Morningstar Breaded Chicken Patty
Whole Wheat English Muffin
Lettuce, Tomato
Marinara Sauce

You might need a salad along with it. But this usually leaves me so full. It ends up being approx 300 calories and 7 g. of fat.

voila

my favourite:

huge salad, all types of leaves`(baby spinach, arugula, romaine, iceberg, etc)
1 can tuna with small amount light mayo
1/4 avacado
tomato, peppers, onion
dried cranberries

yum!

p.s. remember to add healthy fats (in moderation) to your salads to keep you full for a while! try nuts, seeds, oils (olive, pumpkin, sesame, etc), and protein in there too! :) bon appetit!

Try stacking a few things to make yourself feel fullers, like small healthier items.

And here's a GREAT sandwhich recipe I've come up with..you can make it as big as you'd like and it's still pretty healthy.

Bread (whole wheat is best :] and although I usually make the sandwhich on 2 slices, you could try half a loaf of italian bread halved?)
Hummus spread on all one side
Salsa on all the other
Salt and pepper to taste
Tomato slices all along one side
grilled chicken breast on the other
2-3 slices fat free cheddar or american cheese (to use less cheese, I usually tear the slices of cheese and spread them out a little more..makes no real difference in taste and it's less messy!)

While the sandwhich is still open, heat it for a few minutes in the oven, then close, wrap the end in a napkin and foil and enjoy :]

VERY COOL LUNCHBOX and some great ideas

Check out the link! If you look around on the internet google "bento" and "laptop lunches" and you will get some great ideas for inspiring lunches....this link is just one example. Not everything will be low calorie but there is a tendency toward good food that is home made and which is ultimately the direction you want to go in.

Subway & no lunch

subway really is great - my wife and I split a $5 tuna foot long w/ all the veggies - I am 170 lbs but it filled me up okay...
alright that is a lie - I had to have a slice of lite wheat bread with peanut butter and fresh sliced strawberries for dessert... I think that was still about 700 cals though

that was dinner though - my trick is to not eat any meals at all ecxept dinner - just healthy snacks every 2 hours - that way your stomach shrinks up nice and no hunger @ lunch after your balooned out stomach feels cavernous after your big breakfast !
