If you're a diet coke drinker, are you skinny?

I'm curious - the biggest people I see crack open a diet coke. Does diet coke really help you be thin? Please, hopefully the poll will have integrity but I'd love to see from the thin people, if you drink diet coke.

Well, I'm not exactly skinny, but I recently lost 40 pounds and part of that was due to switching from regular soda to diet- obviously, exercise and eating right played a bigger part, but hey, every little bit helps.

i think that "diet" sodas should be labeled- sugar free instead of diet. the word diet implies that it will help you lose weight, when in fact it just won't make things worse by adding extra calories.

this post reminded me of something i used to see all the time when i went to fast food places.... hearing the large person in front of me order- double cheeseburger with extra mayo, extra large fries, a chocolate shake and a large DIET coke. i'd still be chuckling when i ordered my salad and DIET coke.

Well - I drink diet coke. I am 5'10" and 145 so I miss your 135 pound cut-off.. However, I think like many diet-coke drinkers I know, I don't drink it because it's a 'diet' drink but because I like the way it tastes. I would drink it regardless of calorie content simply because I like it.

I'm 5'6" and 126 pounds and drink Diet Coke. I don't drink coffee so it gives me my caffeine burst in the morning and I actually like it a lot more than regular coke - plus the zero calories in it is a nice bonus.

I've lost about 20 pounds...but drank Diet Coke before the weight loss so it definitely wasn't the reason. It was exercise and healthy eating that did it. I generally mostly drink water and limit my Diet Coke intake to usually 1 sometimes 2 per day.

1:47 poster - at 5' 10" and 145 lbs I bet you look great. that sounds like a great place to be. and to get back to the original question. i am a diet coke or diet mt. dew drinker and am losing. i switched about 2 years ago (from regular pop) and haven't regretted it one bit.

I drink only diet soda also and have for many years. I actually prefer the taste. Like another poster said, the switch from regular to diet wasn't the reason for my weight loss but it sure does cut out a lot of "empty" calories in my day. I don't drink coffee so it's my caffeine fix for the day!
I am 5'5 and 120 pounds by the way.

I'm 5'1", 113 lbs (down from 127 lbs), and drink diet coke sometimes at restaurants, but drink diet Rite at home (for whatever reason, I like the taste better.) I try to limit myself to one a day, sometimes two, b/c it can't be beneficial to you. And b/c I don't really like carbonation or how it makes me feel.

I only drink "regular" soda when I'm not feeling well, like ginger ale with an upset stomach.

i love Diet Coke...but my fiance hates it. He swears by regular coke....however recently he has switched to Coke Zero...swearing it tastes just the same. So maybe for those who don't like Diet Coke...try Coke Zero. He had been drinking regular Coke for 26 years, but now he only drinks Coke Zero...must be good :)

Don't judge people for ordering a diet coke with their meal. You should never judge people on their weight anyway. If the person ordering a super sized big mac combo and a large diet coke was skinny you wouldn't have even thought twice about it. I rarely eat fast food but when I do I order diet coke because I like it better then regular coke. You're not in juinor high anymore, so stop laughing behind other peoples backs for their food choices and worry about your own life.

I personally stay away from all pop, sugar or sugar-free... if at all possible.

If you really think about it, you are basically ingesting chemicals and dyes..none of which is particularly nutritional or good for you.

And it seems that most of my friends who are drinking diet are still overweight....

I opt for water with a lemon slice when possible--especially when eating out for several reasons:

1) I don't want any extra chemicals or calories to be consumed. (Eating out tends to be bad enough as it is--even at a "good restaurant", the portions tend to get out of hand...

2) I don't want to lighten my pocketbook either... Drinks for 2 people can cost between $4-6 if you are drinking pop... even more when it's alcoholic beverages.... That can really add up in a hurry....

3) 9 times out of 10, I find myself drinking "multiple glasses" of whatever I'm drinking, whether it's water or pop or tea, etc.... It's very rare that I only drink 1 glass of liquid at a meal. So, I figure that drinking water means I can save those calories for dessert.... :-)

Just imagine how much bigger the person would be if, in addition to the super-size McDonald's meal, they also had the calories from the regular soda - several hundred more calories in a super-sized regular coke than a diet one!

I don't think the "diet" on Diet Coke makes anyone think it is a diet aid; it just has no calories, and thus, it doesn't add calories to a meal.

Well I have worked hard to maintain my weight and have been dieting for many months to get to where I am. I unfortunately am a soda addict and have switched to Diet Coke to help. I personally drink a 24 pack of Diet Coke every week with an additional 20oz bottle while I'm at work.

I'm 5'8, 140lb, jeans size 4-7 depending on brand, fit and style.

Don't you just love judgemental people?

I treat myself to a small amount of junk food now and then, but I have diet soda instead of regular soda because all the sugar in regular drinks make me sick.

So, to the 12:53 p.m. post on May 8, you made clear that your judgmental attitude is from the person being large and ordering a diet soda, rather than if a skinny person was ordering it with the same meal.

Geez, the nerve of some people.

I stopped drinking all soda (I usually drank diet coke) back in Feb and I would say that it is one of the largest factors in me losing weight. I know everyone already knows this but I'll put it out there again: Soda (diet or otherwise) is terrible for you- its not easy quitting, but if your serious about losing weight and getting healthy you should try.

I heard from a nutritionist on the today show that diet soda actually triggers your brain to crave sugar because you get all the taste of sugar but your body doesn't get the sucrose or glucose that its expecting so you want more sugar. Just some food for thought. you're probably better off drinking water or something...

Personally, I hate the taste of sugar water! I use to drink a 12 pack of Mt Dew a day. I can't even handle the taste of sugar in anything anymore. I get severely sick to my stomach. So ya, i drink diet.

I'm a guy, 5'8" 155 lbs. I'm in good shape, not freat, but good. But I am finding I need to kick the soda fix...

Diet soda though can be just as harmful. Ever wonder why you're so tired an hour after you drink a diet soda? Carbonated water is Carbon Dioxide in water! You exhale carbon dioxide from your lungs because your body creates it as waste. So why are we putting a waste byproduct into our bodies? Because it makes out little noses tingly, that's why!

Diet Coke and health

A can of Diet Coke contains 355ml (12 fluid oz)2 of beverage that is free of calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrates. It is not totally without content however, as it does contain 40mg of sodium and 46.5mg of caffeine3. Other ingredients include caramel coloring, aspartame, phosphoric acid, and citric acid. While it doesn't show up in the list of ingredients, there is a warning on the can to people with phenylketonuria that Diet Coke contains phenylalanine. Not surprisingly, the leading ingredient in Diet Coke is good old water.

Notes on Phosphoric Acid:
It is used to remove rust!

Phosphoric acid, used in many soft drinks is often suspected of causing lower bone density. For example a study using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry rather than a questionnaire about breakage, provides reasonable evidence to support the theory that drinking cola results in lower bone density. This study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A total of 1672 women and 1148 men were studied between 1996 and 2001. Dietary information was collected using a food frequency questionnaire that had specific questions about the number of servings of cola and other carbonated beverages and that also made a differentiation between regular, caffeine-free, and diet drinks. The paper finds statistically significant evidence to show that women who consume cola daily have lower bone density. The study also suggests that further research is needed to confirm the findings.

On the other hand, a study funded by Pepsi suggests that low intake of phosphorus leads to lower bone density. The study does not examine the effect of phosphoric acid, which binds with magnesium and calcium in the digestive tract to form salts that are not absorbed, but rather, it studies general phosphorus intake.

Other chemicals such as caffeine were also suspected as possible contributors to low bone density, due to the known effect of caffeine on calciuria. One other study, comprised of 30 women over the course of a week suggests that phosphoric acid in colas has no such effect, and postulates that caffeine has only a temporary effect which is later reversed. The authors of this study conclude that the skeletal effects of carbonated beverage consumption are likely due primarily to milk displacement.[4] (Another possible confounding factor may be an association between high soft drink consumption and sedentary lifestyle

It kind of makes sense why we keep seeing all those osteoporosis medication commercials on TV now.

Three byproducts of aspartame are methanol, formaldehyde, and formate, which defenders maintain occur in modest amounts - similar to what is found in fruit juices - and cannot be considered toxic. But according to a scientific study article on HealthWorld, the methanol in juices is chemically bound so it cannot be absorbed into the body whereas in aspartame it is in a free state where it can be absorbed. Additionally, in aspartame the methanol is unaccompanied by ethanol which acts as a protectant in its natural state.

The most overlooked downfall of any carbonated drink is the carbonation itself! Carbon Dioxide, the thing that makes all those cool little bubbles in a can of cola is the same product our body gives off when we burn energy. The same carbonation that tickles your nose ever so slightly is absorbed into the bloodsteam and actually reduces the amount of oxygen your body receives. A fundamental key to building lean body mass and reducing body fat is the delivery of large amounts of oxygen to muscle. Drinking any cola, diet or not is a one step forward, two steps back approach to your health goals.

Here's where diet soda is a good thing- last night, I was at the store and I was craving something sweet. I thought about grabbing a candybar, but grabbed a diet soda instead. It killed my craving for sweets and filled me up without any calories.

That's a pretty good thing- zero calories and no guilt versus 280 calories and a ton of guilt.

the thing is, you should feel guilty about the chemicals you put into your body by drinking that diet soda. just because there's no calories doesn't mean it's a good choice, albeit a better choice than a candy bar. why not try a mint next time? or a tic ac? or a bottle of water? or some grapes or other fruit?

10:06- No, YOU would feel guilty about all the chemicals in a diet soda. I wouldn't, because I just don't care.

But more than that, your preachy advice isn't even practical- I'm at Target, it's 8:15pm, I'm at the checkout, and I get a craving for sweets. At home, I'd have a handfull of rasins and a glass of water and I'd be done with it, but I'm not at home. My choices are candy bar or diet soda. What's that you say? I should just avoid the temptation altogether? Well, that would be nice, and if I was programmed to do that, I wouldn't need to lose 15 pounds, would I?

gee, sorry to bring out your defensive side. i was attempting to offer advice with regard to the dangers / negative effects of diet soda, and following the info Satyrical offered, i thought it was relevant to point out that there might have been better options. not just for you, but for all of us who find ourselves in the same situation. as far as temptation, by defintion one really can't avoid the temptation, but giving in to it is avoidable. knowing that you (not YOU actually, you collectively, which includes me) have a sweet tooth, why not keep some tic tacs or lifesavers in your purse or car? sometimes a craving can be knocked out with a nice bottle of water, too.

If you are a diet coke drinker, are you skinny

I am a obese person and I have been on my weight loss journey since February 19. I have lost 32 pounds so far and many more left to lose. I have been drinking diet coke for the past 20 years or so.....simply because I like it better than regular coke. I have heard people snicker when they hear me order diet coke in restaurants. It hurt. It also hurts greatly when I see people looking at me with a disgusted look. Still, I continue on. I will lose this weight. I currently work with a nutritionist/hypnotist. He removed from my diet sodium, fat and sugar. So, needless to say, I had to wean myself from diet coke and it wasn't easy. I was addicted to the stuff. Now I drink about a gallon of sodium free bottled water a day (read the labels, not all bottled water is sodium free) and after that much water, I don't want anything else to drink. :)

Diet coke

many years ago I was hypnotized for weight loss with about 20 other people. We had an open discussion about diets, food etc. The hypnotist talked about the sugar in coffee and when I laughed at my friend she nailed me as being a coke-aholic. I was terrible, drank 4 or more cans of coke a day. Needless to say the attention was swerved my way. Of all the hints and suggestions he gave us that night the one that stayed with me for almost 8 years was the cola. I couldn't drink it - it burned - it tasted terrible. I lost weight! Unfortunately that came to an end several years ago. I did switch to diet which I could never handle before, and I have recently cut down to less than 1 a day but I know It is one thing I need to eliminate. Just think coke is the best for cleaning paint brushes and grease on the floor of the gargae, what is it doing to your stomach?

I'm skinny. 34-24-34. I've been drinking diet coke since I was 19. I definitely lost a lot of weight since then, about 20 pounds. I'm 5'3 so that makes a lot of difference.

My friend is slim and she loves diet coke with a slice of lemon.

Wow...this thread has opened a whole new can of worms (ie: the debate over aspartame/other chemicals used to make yummy things 'diet' and/or 'sugar free'), BUT, getting back to the original question-- I think that diet coke drinkers arent 'skinny' necessarily. Like someone else said, diet coke doesnt 'help' your diet, its just a better alternative (calorically) than a regular coke. That being said, I am a diet coke drinker and not teeny skinny, but 5'1 and 115 lbs, and have tried so many times to try to stop drinking it completely, but have had a lot of trouble bc i love the taste andd i have a major sweet tooth. The main reason I have tried to stop drinking it altogether (its not about the chemicals...sorry), is because I have read a bunch of times that drinking something so sweet, kind of has the same affect as eating a lot of processed/sugary foods-- it only makes you want more of something sweet...SO, if you have the willpower to drink a diet coke and let that be that (or drink it and eat/drink anything else you would normally eat/drink) then its definitely a good choice calorie wise...but...I kind of think its true that when I drink one (esp at night) it leaves me wanting a piece of candy, a cookie, etc etc etc...SO...i guess diet coke could help, but it could also 'hurt'...

Most club sodas have potassium citrate. According to my homeopath, not to be ingested when you have heart problems. And I personally found that the potassium citrate was what was giving me migraines when swimming.

I started drinking diet coke cause I was sick of water and I can definitely see and feel the difference. Its has been 3 months and I've gained 10 pounds, just blew up like a balloon. Now I will have to stop.

Absolutely no thinner.
This is the only way to thinness:
1. Eat only when you are hungry. Stop the minute the stomach stops growling.
2. Portion control on days when you can't above.
3. Exercise.

My mother raised me on diet sodas - to this day her pantry is FILLED with diet everything - dr. pepper, mtn dew, cherry coke, etc. She proabably drinks 4 -6 a day and no water. She has yoyo dieted all of my life (I'm 24) and never been skinny. I have gone through phases where I am "obsessed" with diet soda too but i have read a lot about how it actually just tricks your body and can be harmful. That said, I usually have 1/day to satisfy my sweet tooth and get through my afternoon slump.

For the love of God people.
Yes some people drink Diet Soda and stay thin.
Yes some people drink regular soda and stay thin. GASP!
Some people drink diet soda and then think they can eat everything in sight and are overweight.
Some people drink 12 regular sodas in one day and are overweight.

It comes down to calories in VS. calories out!!!!

Switching from regular soda to diet helped me lose weight because it took out a large chunk of my calorie intake. Diet soda isn't good for you but it can be good for weight loss because it is calorie free. I can't imagine my life without soda - its my only real vice and I'm okay with that. If you drink soda a lot and want to lose weight, diet is the only way to go.

Oh, and to teach yourself to like diet, you can start by mixing regular and diet "half and half", and then move to "one third-two thirds" until you get used to not having the real sugar. Worked for me... I used to completely detest diet and now I like it a lot.

Im 5'7 and when I drank diet coke regularly I weighed 137 because it helped curb my food cravings but it was changing the color of my teeth so I eased up aloooot and now I am 143

I was a 200-pound diet coke drinker and I stopped. Along with diet and exercise, I've lost 32 pounds. I'm thinking that diet coke didn't make me lose that weight, but because I didn't drink it, I got fewer cravings for sweets.

Im 5'2" and 125lbs. I drink diet sodas some times... I drink real Soda sometime too though. I try to avoid it if I do drink it I try to drink Diet as much as I can. You CAN be skinny and drink a cup of diet coke everyday... You probably wont be very healthy though is not good for zero calories or not its not good for you. Aspratame makes you crave sugar which is why a lot of people that are addicted to diet coke are over weight. You consume zero calories in you drink but then you crave sugar so bad you binge on other food and eat twice as much as you would have.. Kick the pop addiction altogether, have no more then 1 cup a day remember it IS bad for you wether its zero calories or not

I try to avoid all "diet" products..there are a lot of people having bad side effects to the artificial sweeteners...personally I think I get a headache when I have something with them..And I saw article recently that they are contributing to obesity..I cant remember the reason..maybe something to do with the insulin response..its worth googleing.
I have regular coke or dr pepper once and a while..not too often so I just have the real thing..sometimes I want to guzzle it and ive realized when I have a strong soda craving im dehydrated

The morality of health

There has been zero evidence that diet soda is "unhealthy," meaning that it does some sort of harm to one's body. I enjoy diet soda for the taste. I hate regular soda because it is too sweet tasting. I don't think that it helps or hinders weight loss, but if you are trying to lose weight it helps if you don't drink your calories. Also, I gained weight by eating fast food and not exercising, but I did lose 80 pounds while drinking diet soda. As fas as the title to my comment goes...we shouldn't deny ourselves the things we enjoy just because we are trying to be healthy, moderation is key!

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in March. I weighed 215 lbs. and was 5'7". I switched to diet coke and cut my carbs quite a bit (I saw a nutritionist) and dropped to 165 in about 5 months. Then I hit plateau city. I do think that switching from regular to diet helped with the initial weight loss but you cant rely on just drinking diet coke. you have to exercise as well and watch your food intake.

btw, I have recently joined theYMCA so i am working on the exercise part
And I have cut back on even the diet sodas so I am getting to where I need to be.
