I have stopped eating brown rice...

I know it is good for me, I just can't take it any more. White rice tastes soooo much better. I ordered chinese tonight, with one brown rice and one white rice. I ate the white rice and loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No more guilt!!!!!

Brown Rice

good for you!! Brown rice is awful - way too chewy - you might as well expend those calories on something you enjoy!

Well I guess good for you. Personally I like brown rice and don't taste that much of a difference. I use whole grain rice, bread, pasta, crackers... whenever possible so I can eat carbs with no guilt.

it's ok that you want to eat white rice rather than brown. You just need to know how many calories you will ingest with white vs brown, and adjust your intake accordingly!

Ditto, I tried making brown rice at home, it was terrible. Then I tried it at a restaurant to give it another shot, still terrible. Like the other poster said, why waste calories on food that you hate?

Unfortunately, it's not just about calorie intake. The issue with white rice is that it's a high glycemic index (GI) food, meaning your body breaks it down all at once, causing huge spikes in blood glucose levels. Large fluctuations in blood glucose make your pancreas and insulin receptors work overtime and can ultimately lead to insulin resistance (read: type II diabetes).

Though, you can often lessen the blood glucose "spike" by eating white rice with other foods. I sometimes mix white and brown rice together, because I love white rice too!

It's great to enjoy what you eat, but it's also important to know what your choices are doing to your body so you can compensate accordingly.

For those who think that brown rice is too chewy...If it's too chewy, you made need to add a bit more water and to cook it longer... Brown rice needs more water to cook properly. I have a rice cooker that adjusts its cooking time for brown rice (got it at Sam's Club), it works really well. :-) Otherwise, it's like eating under-cooked barley...

If you have one near you, The Trader Joe's Frozen Brown Jasmine rice comes in 2 cup servings (so, eat 1/2 of you want 1 serving) AND, it's not excessively chewy either. I don't really taste that much of a difference, plus it only takes 3 minutes to cook AND it's better for you. (more fiber, lower glycemic index.)

Coming from a person whose Asian background meant that I was brought up eating white rice, I find that brown rice is not that different, depending on the variety that you cook. Some ARE very grainy and strong in taste, but Brown Jasmine Rice tends to have sweeter flavor and is not nearly as nutty as some of the other types....

On the other hand, I absolutely abhor "instant rice" such as Uncle Ben's Rice. You might as well be feeding me plastic pellets....
