I'm ALWAYS hungry.

I can eat a meal fit for two and then an hour later be ready for more. Does anyone have any tricks on eating foods that keep you full longer? Or Something small that i can eat inbetween meals to get me through?

I would suggest increasing your water consumption. Drx have reported that hungry signals in the brain can actually be confused with being thristy. Wait 20 mins and if you are certainly hungry, have a piece of fruit that contains water and it should help you fill full and satisfied.

I have to agree, water, water and more water and if you are not a big water drinker you can try hot tea ( decaff) and or crystal light!

Also you can snack during the day-fruits, carrots, pretzels and then you may not feel 'deprived'!

Hope this helps!

I definitely think it could be what you are eating for the meal as well. If you are eating a lot of empty calorie foods...high in sugar and carbs vs high fiber whole grains and vegetables that can also make a difference. I totally agree with everyone else as well about drinking a lot more water.

Make sure your meal has fat, protein and fiber. Eating a 2-person serving of spaghetti w/ marinara will make you hungry 2 hours later; eating 4oz beef with a bunch of green veggies will keep you full for hours.

I would also stay away from foods that have a high sugar content or those that are likely to cause you blood sugar levels to spike, that can trigger hunger and also cause you to crave more of the same foods high in sugar and carbs, but don't provide you with the nutrients you need. I would also suggest taking a Fber supplement like Fibersure or Benefiber 3 times a day. You can dissolve it in you drinks or put it in your food. The fiber will help you fill up faster and stay full longer. Each serving had 5 grams of fiber. Then add more fiber to your diet through high fiber foods.

More veg, more fruit, more beans, more fiber.
And if you need to snack, make it veg, fruit or beans. Lots of nutrients per calorie, few calories per weight/volume/satiety.

my new tricks

I have found a few ways to stop my eatting between meals. I think its okey to eat a small snack either befor lunch or after lunch, somethig that will hold you over befor lunch or dinner. I have also stoped eatting after dinner. When ever i start to feel hungry i drink a water. If i dont want a water, i eat an ice cube. It gives you that feeling as if you were eatting something but its just frosen water. If that dusn't help try brushing your teeth. It gets your mind off of the ffod and gives you a fresh tast.

I recently discovered flavored water. It has no calories. It's sweetened with splenda.

I chew sugar free gum because for me it is more of just wanting to taste something

Eat slower. If you are eating too fast you won't taste the food, feel unsatisfied and then go back for more. Eat mindfully and slowly and you'd be surprised at how quickly you fill up.

Water never works for me. It just makes me go to the bathroom. Make sure each of your meals contain at least 5 grams of fiber and limit high sugar foods.

In between, if you don't have problems with sodium, it may be comforting to drink chicken broth (or veggie broth); it tastes more like soup, so it seems more filling, but it's basically just water and salt. Just, hot water and a bouillion cube.

One thing I found that helps is a website called nutritiondata.com. It's good because it will show you several different things about the foods you eat, most importantly something they call the fullness factor of a food, ie how hungry are you going to be after you eat this. The nice thing is they have a sliding scale that shows you how filling and how nutrious the foods you are eatting are and then they give you recommendations on better choices. You can input everything you eat for the day and it will show you overall where most of your foods fall on that scale. It's a good reality check for when you think you are eating healty but really your just eatting something that will leave you hungry again in 10 minutes. I use it to also track my caloric intake and to see where most of my foods fall, carbs, fats or proteins. Its a great tool if you are a visual person.

The other big thing I will reiterate is eat high fiber foods and drink lots of water, usually when you think you're hungry you're actually thristy.
Good luck

Make sure you are eating a meal with protein. I was having the same problem but now I have solved it. Even a protein shake keeps me full for hours. I also agree with the water comments. LOTS and LOTS of water friend!

I am running into the same problem at dinner time, I am starving!

I am not sure if I am bored, hungry or just some emotional thing!

I am now working out so that may be some of it, but I just don't know!

I drink 12 glasses of water a day so that is not it!

Sigh, I am just stuck!

Thanks!!

good grief 12 glasses I think I would float away! :) Hmm. Have you tried preparing yourself an after lunch or after work snack so that when you get to dinner you arent starving. I know my problem is I am a perpetual snacker so I just make sure I have prepared myself a snack of veggies or fruit or even a piece of bread with a tablespoon of peanutbutter to tide me over. That way I dont do something worse like grab some girlscout cookies on impulse since I dont have anythig prepared. I make my snacks at the same time I am making my lunch to take to work with me so that I have them there when I need them.

Thank you, yes I tried that yesterday so maybe I am just eating the wrong things!

I know about the water....but I made a mistake, it was 10 glasses of water-that is my goal and this is an all day thing!

Thanks for the info, I will try your suggestions and best of luck to you!!!!

posted this under the other hungry thread, but thought i would post it here, too.

While I agree water is good for you (and I drink ALOT of water), water before, during, and after meals is NOT a good idea.

I always thought one trick to feeling full was drink a great big glass of water before each meal, that way I'd eat less. Turns out I wasn't doing myself or my body any good. And here's why:

When you drink water or any liquid and then eat, you've neutralized the stomach acids making it hard to digest the food you ate, therefore, your body holds onto it and stores it as fat because you couldn't break it down properly. That leads to acid reflux, constipation, weight gain, fatigue, etc.

Once I learned this from my osteopath and my doc, i stopped drinking 30 minutes before, during, and after a meal and my stomach is no longer bloated, my bm's are regular, and I'm less fatigued.

Hope that helps.

All the above suggestions are possibilities, but I have been tracking hunger signals very carefully for the last week. It dawned on me that the actual reality of life is, if you are eating recommended amount for height and weight healthy calories you will actually be hungry most of the time. There is a cycle that begins with slight hunger, moderate hunger, legitimate hunger, considerable hunger, hunger needs satisfaction, all in approximate 30 minute spans each, then we start eating, begin satisfaction and satisfied in another 20 to 30 minutes, there is only about 30 minutes when you actually don't have any hunger (right after eating) then the cycle begins again. You are normal. It is quite a freeing realization because you are not fighting hunger as much as you are letting it reach its signals which tell you to eat. For those of use that don't want to feel any hunger it is a hard realization. If you eat at all the intermediate "twinges" you will overeat and become obese. So state simple, just observing the cycle in terms of time we are in some stage of hunger all except for about a couple of hours a day.

I make sure my meals are low fat and high fiber - I pick whole grains and lean meats and try to work in fruits and veggies as a side. My favorite thing to do is heat up a sweet potato (add cinnamon + splenda + sugar free syrup) or grill some veggies (portabella mushrooms + onions) then have a couple slices of lean lunch meat. It's really filling, low calorie (200 cal), low fat, and good for you!

In between meals I drink water (usually flavored) and diet sodas or snack on fruits, veggies, sugar free pudding, light yogurt, etc. I chew on cinnamon gym to help out when I'm not hungry but craving to crunch on something - even mints help out, just don't eat the whole tin :)

Are most of us hungry most of the time?

I wonder. How many of you are like the OP and feel hungry most of the time. There are many posts that offer suggestions about what to eat or drink, but even though you have ways to deal with it, are you hungry most of the time?
