So who's winning the spotlight?

When do we vote people off? How does that work?

the participants in the spotlight are winning just by being participants. the rest of us win by following the members in the spotlight and learning from them.

The winner is....

Anyone in the spotlight that manages to actively log during the whole entire time and set a good example. So often I see many who just fizzle before their time in spotlight is over - not very motivating for the rest of the community.

But THANK YOU to those of you that do set a good example of what Peertrainer is all about - you are the winning spotlight members!!

I totally disagree with this whole special olympics approach to the spotlight. I say lets identify the weakest link in the chain- the person least committed and helpful-- and HOUND THEM off the spotlight. Maybe of the site altogether. Because who wants someone around who is not a team player. you know?

No, I'm not joking at all. I thought this was a "biggest loser" kind of thing, someone wins right? I don't undersantd the notion that "participants are winning just by participants". What is the sense in that?

See the NYT article on marathons linked to below. Seems like most people "win" by finishing.

The spotlight is'nt supposed to be a competition; it's just a window of time that you commit yourself to reaching your personal goals. By being "in the spotlight" you are more likely to follow through. That's all!

You don't vote anyone off. I do think that 2 teams competing would be cool.

Hey, I think a competition is a great idea, but the spotlight is not the forum for it. OP - would you consider starting a team that votes people out? Would anyone else join this team? It would be a major butt kicker, I bet.

I would have fun doing a team competition. That would be awesome but there would have to be stipulations of course. The biggest loser idea wouldnt work for us all. They are doing that at my work and since I am not 100 LBS overweight I dont have 100 LBS to lose ya know. I am in for sure
By the way, Love ya Lynn-Keep up the excellent job

I think it would be cool to comepete but you would have to get some really motivated members in groups together and you would have to do it in some sort of weight system not everyone is the same...And how would you know if sombody is being truthful since your weighing yourself as apposed to a television show where you cant cheat.....

I guess if someone lied about their loss he/she would just honestly be cheating her/him self.

Clarification to the OP

The spotlight is not a competition-- its an opportunity for us to share our struggles with the others in the PT community.

We all have different goals. Some of us are in the spotlight to maintain, others need a kick in the pants to get moving on our goals, while others just want to become fitter. We are all different ages and each of us has our own struggles.

My take on the spotlight is that it's an opportunity for some of us to get some extra motivation to start or continue our journey to better health.

When we are chosen for the spotlight, we are allowing ourselves to be vulnerable to the other people in the community-- after all, who wants to say that they messed up on their food, fitness and health goals in public?

We're here because we realize we want to be a different place in our own fitness journey--whether it is overcoming an eating disorder, getting healthy because of our age, trying to maintain what we've worked hard to achieve or even need an extra set of "eyes" to see beyond our own perceptions of what we are doing positively or negatively to ourselves... For some of us, it's been a private struggle in the past, for some of us, we've been our own boot camp trainers... (or we've trained others!)

We're here to inspire and help ourselves and each other to get to a better place in our own personal journey to good health. Many of us have had personal struggles with negative self-body image or self-worth over the years due to what others deem as an unhealthy way of living.

For some, joining the spotlight is a chance for us to take our own health into our own hands--We are standing up for ourselves and saying that "enough is enough" and that we will now be in charge of our own destiny.

That in itself is a brave step! Getting "voted off" would not help the cause for those of us who have felt our own personal shame and guilt for our "lack of control" in the past. Instead, it would make some of us shrink back into our old selves where we did not allow ourselves to be in charge of ourw own bodies...

So, after all of this rambling, I'm just trying to say that the Spotlight is a place of positive-reinforcement of good habits. We are also looking for reminders to get back on track when we fall off... :-)

Hope this helps! :-)

We are all motivated differently

Well, I personally need more motivation and some sort of consequences when I overeat. It has become HABIT to overeat, log it, write to my group "Yeah I really messed up" and have them say "It's okay, start fresh tomorrow." How long can that go on? After struggling for four months to lose those last 10 pounds, I need an extra KICK in the pants, not a pat on the head. I'm also extremely competitive, so that style really works for me.

To 6:22 poster--
There are some folks in the spotlight that also prefer the kick in the pants... They just let the rest of the people know.

Obviously what motivates 1 person might not motivate another.

Spotlight is there to highlight a variety of different styles of fitness and health-- so that others who share the same style can be motivated as well.

irrisvb- you are right. But you are also right about how everyone is motivated differently. I like the niceness of everyone but i think it would be exciting and fun to play a 'game' and have a group or team started where you would be voted off if you didnt lose weight and there would be a winner. Just a game.
