Does drinking coffee make one more likely to drink alcohol?

I feel like I need to unwind in the evening with something- a drink, a workout. Something to take the edge off. But when I don't drink coffee during the day (a rare thing), I am totally relaxed, and can just chill out. Is there a chemical relationship between stimulants and depressants?

I believe that there is, I'm remembering from the "olden" days, when we were told that.

Drinking coffee does NOT make one more likely to drink alcohol. I've drunk coffee for more than 40 years and have never tasted alcohol and have no desire to do so.

i think the op is asking if there are any similarities in the effects of both beverages... not necessarily that it will make you likely to drink alcohol, but experience the same feelings with alcohol but with coffee.

for me the taste is relaxing but ultimately gives me a jittery feelling, which i like... on the other hand an alcoholic drink makes me relaxed all over, so i can't find a similiarity other than the actual act of drinking coffee is relaxing for me. maybe it's psychological.

I have caffeine almost every day. I don't really drink often maybe once every month or two! So i don't think this is true

But the OP is asking if drinking coffee (a stimulant) is more likely to make you need something to relax like alcohol (a depressant). They have different and not similar effects because they act like complete opposites on the body.

I could go for a coffee with some Baileys in it right now.

That should even things out.

I am a happy 3 cup a day coffee fan, and a 1 glass / night wine lover. One winds me up and the other brings me down

Both are highly addictive, but i don't feel that the use of one is realted to the use of the other. Have you ever seen the roit when a Starbucks is unexpectedly closed or doesn't open on time? i wouldn't want to be anywhere near that! Though the addiction to alcohol is worse in severity, I think caffine addictions (or the reactions from withdrawls) is just as frightening. Like the woman who didn't get her morning jo at the local coffee shop, the office pot is broken and the soda machine is out of order ... Get out of the way!

I think it's more about the addictive gene or addictive personality. Many members of my family are in AA and once they quit drinking they replace it with coffee/diet coke.

For the record, I hardly ever drink coffee (once every 2 weeks, maybe) but do like to have a glass of wine at night to relax.

i think there could be some sort of connection. Although its not alcohol like the OP states. I have just recently quit smoking cigs and when I get an awful craving coffee seems to make it better.
