Sort if OT: Hair

This is for women. Does anyone have facial hair that they cant get rid of. I only ask because this is completely anonymous. Anyway, I have to shave everyday, and actually could shave twice a day but I get razor burn. I hate this. Is it weight related? If I lose weight will it decrease? I used to tweeze, but the hair is so much that it is impossible. Serioulsy, I could have a goatee if I didnt shave. Thats the shape it makes, its around my chin up the sides of my mouth and around. The lip doesnt bother me, its not bad, but the chin and neck is ridiculous. I never let anyone near me, but I am sure people can see it. Any ideas?

it sounds like a hormonal imbalance to me.... have you asked your dr. about it? and have you considered having it waxed? it will last quite a bit longer than a shave. good luck!

Let's see...you are presumably overweight since you're on this site, and you suffer from hirsutism. Harrass your doctor into getting you checked for PCOS (Poly-cystic ovary/ovarian syndrome).

Yes I have asked my doctor, they have prescribed vaniqua and told me they have lazer hair treatments. I cant do the waxing because in order to do that the haor has to be like a 1/4 of an inch and I cannot walk around with that on my face. As for PCOS no, I would think that would be the first thing the doc would think of.

Just a follow up, I checked out PCOS and I only have the hair symptom. I have regular periods and have had 2 children so I am not infertile, both were very easy, and actually accidental, pregnancies, and Ijust had my yearly and the doc didnt notice any difference in my ovaries or thyroid. Thanks for the info though.

I'd really look into laser treatments. Also, if you are going through menopause some women get more facilal hair growth because hormones are shifting. Also, ethnicity can play a role.

Some of us just grow more hair than others. It's hard not to be right smack in the mainstream with something. Hope you don't isolate yourself too much. Really talk directly with your doctor or a dermatologist. They hear this stuff everyday. I saw a dermatologist because my eyebrows are getting thin ...and she really helped.

OP here- Yea it took me 6 years to finally talk to my doctor because it is so embarrasing. Its not menopause, i am actually on it now. It started with my first pregnancy. I didnt know that some women grow hair and then it just falls out after the pregnancy so my ex husband made me sahve it because HE was embarrased. It has just gotten worse over the years. I am saving up to do the lazer and am also hoping it will go away with the weight.

Shaving the hair off might actually make it thicker. Not sure if this is true or just an old wive's tale but this is what my mother has always advised so check out other alternatives for hair removal. Also, not familiar with PCOS but you should consider getting a second opinion and don't assume that your doctor knows best. It's not always true and, sometimes, if you don't raise the question yourself, the doctor may not think of it either. Good luck!

Hang in there OP. You took a huge step just by putting it out here (and really so many people worry about this kind of stuff). And you asked the doctor. You are taking the steps you need to take to move ahead with this. I am amazed by how shame or worry stops me with stuff like this.

Do you have other blood relatives you can ask about this to see if it is a familial trend? My sister and I joke that our eyebrows are growing out our chins. All my menopausal friends compare notes on the best tweasing mirrors (chin hairs coupled with failing eyesight!!! pretty funny Huh?). As women we suffer this stuff. But we don't necessarily have to.

Sounds like there is a hormonal element for you. Pregnancy causes huge changes as does menopause.

9:01 are you dense or do you just act that way?

She said that in order to wax she needs hair growth would you want to walk around with facial hair so you could get to the point where you could finally wax?
Laser and photolysis can be expensive, and doesn't get to the root of the problem which appears to be hormonal

If you could almost shave twice a day, as you say, and you're embarassed to walk around with the hair on you, I'd advise making a waxing appointment for a Monday morning. (This is, of course, dependent of your work schedule). Then, shave Friday morning, go to work, come home, and camp out at home all weekend. Then Monday morning, it should be long enough to wax. A good waxer will tweeze out anything that didn't come off with the wax.

Then, as hairs grow in at different rates, you may be able to tweeze to keep up with it - should be just a few hairs to tweeze a day. That should at least keep it smoother than shaving, until you save up for the lazer treatments.

Is it possible for you to bleach the hair? My friend bleaches her "moustache"....It's a heriditary trait in her family...

Maybe like the 10:49 poster said, you could take a Friday Off and lay low for the weekend.. Although bleaching before waxing my make your skin sensitive, it might help if you need to let it grow for a few days.

OP here. It is almost impossible to lay low for any weekend, I have 2 young kids. Plus, the smae thing comes up. leaving the house MOnday morning, going into a salon and then having to wait until they get to me. I do plan on saving up for the lazer, but for my areas its about $2000. So I am unfortunately relegated to shaving. I was just wondering if anyone else had the problem and what they do about it. Oh, yes it is hereditary. All of my aunts on my moms side have it, as does my mom. They were all overweight at one point as well. So, it could be hereditary as well as being overweight. My sister and I joke about our damn genes. And she doesnt have the problem. I got it at around 190 pounds, when I was pregnant with my son, and she has never passed 180 pounds and is now down to 119. Maybe it is a weight thing but I think once you shave there is no getting rid of it, unless maybe lazer. Damn...

I have a similar problem. I did seem to happen as I got larger. Not quite as thick as yours sounds though. I am able to let it grow in for a few days without anyone noticing(too much). Then I wax. If you shave then the hair that grows back is blunt and much more noticeable. If you can't wax I would try a hair removal lotion like Nair or Sally Hansen. It should last longer than shaving. Good luck!

there's this powder called magic shave powder or something like that. i get it at sally beauty supply... i buy it for grooming my um kitty. but it was originally made for black males that are prone to ingrown hairs and bumps. it's in the male care section. it's safe for your face, as that is what it's for. just mix it with water and it dissolves the hair away and lasts for days. and it's super cheap!

There is a prescription cream you can apply daily to help stop unwanted hair from growing. You may want to see a dermaatologist.

I totally know where you are coming from

So, since I was in middle school I have had excess hair on my chin area. I got the guts in high school to do electrolysis, my twin who had the same problem did not. We get it if from my mother who got it from her mother and so on. I went for 9 months of treatment and it worked, the hair was completely gone, I was hair-free until I went off birth control 3 years ago then I was back to the hairy chin again. The growth remained dormant for 10 years and then within three months of stopping the pill... BANGO! it started growing back. For me, it's totally a hormonal issue. My twin has always had to tweeze her entire chin EVERYDAY for the past ten years. Her chin is constantly inflamed and irritated from the repetitive pulling and picking. My mother, in her early 20's shaved the area and now waxes. She gave up caring about how long it has to be--she has had to deal with this for the past 50 years so she is soooo over it. I, got back into electrolysis, it's great. The hair doesn't have to be dark (like with laser) or long (like with waxing) and it doens't get extra prickly (like with shaving). I have done the laser and I think electrolysis is a better choice for me. It's cheaper and the tech. can get the stubly bonde hairs that the laser can't. (Most lasers work with recognizing pigment) As for shaving, you will absolutely not make the hair thicker-the only time you can do that is when you alter the growth of the hair by pulling at the root ie. tweezing, electrolysis, waxing. When you get laser or electrolysis they work to kill the root so it's on it's way out, when you tweeze or wax the hairs most of the time you are just creating a stronger hair because the your body works extra hard to compensate for it's loss. Not so say that after several years of waxing or tweezing an area you couldn't "kill" the root on your own--I just don't think you want to wait that long. I know from personal experience that cutting it and bleaching it are just not an option, it's far too too obvious. Good luck, oh yea, you can start electrolysis until you save up for laser. It won't "stunt" your results from laser treatments. I talked to my DR. about my issues with the extra hair and she said once it's gone again from electrolysis to expect it when I get pregnant and go thru menopause. For me it's just a part of life, but I've figured out thru trial and error which work best for me. At the current time I have not one dark or stubly hair on my face and don't expect to for another 4-5months and it feels good again to not have to be self conscience of certain light or someone touching my face. Take care.

I think "hiding out for the weekend" is hilarious. It sounds like you've got some kind incurable leprosy or something! hahaha have fun and get your hairs electricuted or zapped..you'll be fine. Losing weight most likely won't change or decrease your hair growth-unless your weight is directly linked to your hormones.

the problem no one wants to admit they have

I also have had a problem with hirsutism - for 15 years. The only time that I noticed my facial hair retreat a little was during the time I took birth control pills. I thought I was rid of it forever, until I stopped taking b.c. pills, and there was the hair again. It's very hormone-related, and genetics related. However, if you're having hair pop up over and over again, and no amount of electrolysis will rid you of it, then I would definitely check it out with your doctor. Have a bloodwork panel done with your doctor. Insist on being checked out - thoroughly - for PCOS. I just recently found out that I was pre-diabetic, insulin resistant, which means that my insulin isn't working right, and has made me really fat, especially around my waist, no matter how much I exercise and no matter how little I eat. My doctor prescribed a low-carb diet (I do Atkins), which really helped me shed pounds safely. He also explained that a high insulin level can make you have extra hair (aha!). So, while it's not a magic bullet, try a low-carb diet - it might just help you out both weightwise and hairwise. It really has helped me out, even though it's sometimes hard to stick to, because you actually have to eat high-quality food that's often cooked at home. I don't always have time to cook, so that has made it hard.

I have to wax my upper lip. And take care of my mom both lip and chin. Mom used to shave but we do the waxing now and she loves it. I have been using wax for about 10 years now and I only have to do it about every 2 or 3 months. It has really thinned out the hair. It also isn't as dark as it once was.
I use Sally Hanson Brazilian wax formula for the face.
I know you said waxing wasn't an option but this stuff is better than a lot of others and I find that hair doesn't have to be very long for it to work. It does sting a bit but it works. And it is about 5 dollars at wal mart. Heat it in the microwave and it is quick and easy.
I don't think I realized that this was such an issue for so many people.
Whatever method you choose I wish you well.
