New Group : Fit Through Menopause

Hello,

I just started a new group for women that would like to be active in supporting each other during the menopausal phase of life.

If you plan to be actively involved with the group, we would love to have you as a member. Hope to see you there.

Smiles,
Kat

I'm 54 and have been in menopause for a couple of years. I've always been fit and slim and have eaten well and continue to now, BUT my belly and thighs are "blossoming." I can't even wear the jeans I wore just a few short months ago. I have not changed my eating habits and I otherwise feel pretty well and continue to work out daily - aerobics and weights, and now adding power walking now that spring's here. I'd love to hear from others who might be going through the same thing.

Hi 1:45 poster-You sound like me! I too am 54. Just finshed up a year w/o periods and even though I am in the gym lifting weights and doing cardio-I too have experienced midriff bulge. Love handles and muffin top-what the...! I am wondering if doing more cardio as you are doing works. I would really like to know-although I think I spend as much time in the gym as I possibly can now.
Keep me posted. Thanks!

Ditto

I am 49 and though my weight stays fairly steady I am gaining fat. I lift considerable weight and do cardio and Pilates but my clothes get tighter and tighter in the middle. I am putting on muscle AND fat. I eat a fairly clean diet, no simple carbs. I mainly live on the induction phase of South Beach with complex carbs several times a month. The 20 -something trainers at my gym can't explain it but I've come to realize it is part of the hormonal stew I am in right now. However if one more 20 year old with a BMI of 18% tells me I need to eat less fat and exercise more I'll hit her with a carrot stick!!

Ha-that's a good one.
Turns out that as our estrogen production slows our belly fat increases to ease the transition.
A shift in the level of estrogen is one of the causes for menopausal weight gain. With the ovaries declining in their production of estrogen, the fat cells can "take up the slack" of estrogen production to some degree, lessening the effects of declining estrogen.
There you have it. It's Mother Nature's way of helping us.

Correct 8:58. I am currently reading:
Outsmarting the midlife fat cell : the foolproof weight control program designed specifically for menopause / Debra Waterhouse to find out more info around this issue that no one seems to really know much about. I asked a journalist friend of mine to research mid life belly spread for me because my other friend and I who practically live in the gym are baffled by our puffy mid sections and wondering if we need to work out even more or what?

The info in 11:45 post makes sense. Susan Weed, an herbalist, has suggested for years for women to SLOWLY gain weight during the 40's because estrogen is stored in body fat and when menopause occurs, you will have a store of it to help with cardiac risk and bone density. I, however, did not need any help in putting on weight..familial predisposition to obesity and I also practically live at the gym. Thanks Mother Nature.

perimenopause

Your words are enlightening. All of you I am working on menopause but it has not yet been a year. My tsh level is very low. Wondering how I could be hyperthyroid and gaining weight. A cardiologist has put me on the south beach diet and recommends increased arobic daily workout. Had to quit school in the fall because I was in so much pain which the doctor attributed to menopausal arthritis. I am dieting working out and getting fatter around the middle. What a mess. Welcome to old age compatriot menopausal warriors. Nobody ealse could possibly understand. Have any of you tried the southbeach diet?

South Beach

I'm the 7:48 am poster. I live on South Beach, mainly on induction. In addition to menopause I have apparently developed Type 2 diabetes. Yippee. I'm a nurse and realize if I hadn't had a life of exercise and sensible eating (I was a vegetarian for 23 years) I would definitely be on meds and/or insulin. I have complex carbs (brown rice, sweet potato, whole grain bread) once or twice a week. A little fruit, especially in the summer (leftover pattern from a stint as a macrobiotic years ago). My blood sugar has normalized but continues to slowly creep up due to the diabetes. Despite the ongoing debate among various threads, the diet DOES lead to a loss of belly fat first, mainly along the sides. Pilates has toned my abdominals and therefore my waist has gotten a little smaller due to the toning, but the fat is still there.

I'm the 11:45 poster from a couple of days ago. The book I am reading/skimming suggests 4 hours/week aerobics and only 1 hr strength training (yeah right). I do 4 hrs strength and 1.5 hrs aerobics. Hmmm...I would never cut back on my strength tr aining as I love it so much, but finding those extra hours for aerobics-that's a tough one.
Guess I s/check into the South Beach if you posters think it helps. I am also teetering on picking up hoola hooping. It's fun and and a fat burner. :-)

from perimenopause. thanks 707am. sorry to hear about the glucose levels sounds like you are doing your best to kwell those fasting levels. Nice to hear from another nurse. keep fighting ladies.
hey 0827 your 1145 note truly reinforces what we are up against. I do not know what kind of strenght training you do but if you increase the speed of your weight training could it also become aerobic? I used to do aerobic weight lifting when I was younger by increasing the speed of my workout.

Be careful with lifting quickly, particularly free weights, you lose some stability when not on machines. You can injure joints that way. I'm resting from weights right now due to a rotator cuff injury from lifting too quickly. The other point is I've been told (by 20 yr old trainers so take it with a grain of salt) that you can't sustain your heartrate long enough by lifting (unless circuit training) to make weight lifting aerobic)

To South Beach,
Last night I did tri sets with a friend of mine and while waiting for 1 minute between sets I jumproped. W/the tri sets we finshed 4 sets of 3 excercises for our back in no time flat. We didn't do the actual exercise faster-we just moved from one to another and rested after each tri set. I'm going to try that again this w/e for other body parts. It's always good to trick your body once in awhile anyway.

Got Sleep??

Any helpful hints on sleeping? I've tried Ambien and Lunesta, after a few days they has the reverse effect and I'm up all night. Same with Melatonin. Tried all sorts of herbal combinations and at best they (eventually) help me fall asleep for a short period, then I'm up again. I'm a nurse and only need to worry about sleep on nights before I work but need to sleep on those nights. HELP!!

4:15 poster here. Chamomile tea hasn't worked. Celestial Seasonings put out a Stress Buster tea several years ago but then took out the best part of it, Kava Kava, when there had been some news about it being toxic to the liver. Just doesn't work as well now.

southbeach

Lost eight pounds over two weeks. Started with phase per 2 physician recommendation. Weight lost is mainly around the physiological midriff. It is kinda hard to control cravings at night but sticking with the diet choices helps. Starvation is not a problem with southbeach. Exercise is a necessity. Thank you all remain steadfast and true to your goals. Namaste

menopausal madness

I am 51 years old and have always been a size 4. I love to cook and eat healthy meals and have always exercised. I am having a great deal of trouble dealing with this menopausal "pouch" around my middle, even though I am going to the gym regularly and eating less! I find it depressing that my nice, fitted clothes don't fit and I only feel comfortable in elastic!! How do you combat the depression???

Prematue ovarian failure = menopause and belly fat :(

I wish I knew how to combat the depression. I'm 38 and have premature ovarian failure. Therefore, I get the extra treat of going through this including the belly fat everyone above is talking about at an extra early age. I am SUPER fit, work out at least four times a week (and have been doing so for 17 years), always eat healthfully and now I can't fit into my beautiful fitted dresses (one of which I bought just two months ago and haven't even worn). I no longer fit into my beautiful work clothes and as a teacher can't really afford to buy new ones and DON'T want to! :( I will look into South Beach too. Ugh. :(
