I have read that one should avoid iron supplements, but have heard good things about Twin Labs as well. Does GNC carry that line?

I take GNC Women's Ultra Mega. There is one with iron and one without. I am slightly anemic so I take the one with iron. When I take it regularly I really feel a difference in my energy level. I do pee bright yellow though which means I may be getting too many vitamins, so if you have a vitamin rich diet already it might not be for you because it has 100% "daily value" for pretty much every vitamin you could need.

The bright colored pee thing is usually from vitamin C & isn't a health concern. I take the Twin Lab w/iron during that special time of the month. There is a non-iron one as well. I can't remember if GNC handles Twin Lab. I believe so. Many health food stores do as well. Good luck!

to supplement or not to supplement iron?

In regards to the question about not supplementing iron. I think it depends on your diet, body type, health etc. If you're anemic maybe iron is a good thing. But I've read before and found this website that explains the theory that women are at a lower risk for heart attack than men because of the regular depletion of iron with the monthly menstrual cycle. Nothing has been proven yet about that theory but maybe it's a benefit that nature has given women that we're stamping out with supplements. Just make sure before suplementing with vitamins and minerals, that you take the time to read up on what you're putting in your body to make sure its appropriate for you. Cheers!

Yes! Good point! I originally posted the idea of a vitamin w/iron & noted that it was on dr. recommendation. I don't blindly follow suggestions, but had taken some different blood tests & then decided to supplement w/iron. It is not something that everybody needs & is one of the minerals that one can take too much of!

can't you just chow down on some iron-rich greens (kale sauteed with garlic and a little sage, collard greens, spinach, etc.) before there were pills to get your iron there was food. i actually raised my iron level from a 6 to a 14 in less than a month by consuming greens each night with dinner or at lunch. the blood donor people were ecstatic!!

Yeah, I eat big leafy veggies everyday, but I guess I was still in need of a little extra iron from a supplement.

when you go to donate blood they check your iron levels first (at least if you are a woman they do). when my iron levels were too low, i was advised to go to my doctor to check into anemia. she put me on some iron supplements. these itty-bitty pills caused a huge uproar within my intestinal tract and the pain and discomfort was awful. so, i instead started eating iron rich foods every day (including kale, clams, beans and thyme in everything.) so much better!!! and my energy level has risen and it's just been great.

You can get your iron tested with a finger-prick at your doctor's office, kind of similar to getting your blood sugar tested.

the difference with going to the doctor's office and donating blood to check your iron levels is that the doctor's office visit will cost $$. the blood donor centers are free and you can also save up to 3 lives from a single donation, if you are eligible. in most cases, you also do not need to make an appointment weeks ahead to donate.

I recently started taking Joel Fuhrmans Gentle Care multivitamin. 2 key points 1) much easier on the stomach 2) does not turn my pee bright yellow. This makes me think whatever is in these pills is going into my body vs elsewhere.
