Why does it bother everyone so much? I guess I really don't associate it with yelling...it is just a different look.

i don't think it bothers everyone. i get a little confused reading the big block letters. i was asked not to send out quote requests in all caps when i began working in an office. it's some sort of ettiquette on the web.

While it is indeed common internet etiquette (caps = shouting), studies have shown that people will not read advertising in all caps because it's harder on the eyes. You'll notice that the use of caps in most posters, etc., is limited to a single word, phrase, or product name.

And the OP's "ITA" is, I think, a typo'd abbreviation for TIA, meaning Thanks In Advance. So you might find it ironic, but it's actually just the appropriate use of capitalization.

I agree with the 6:21 poster.

We don't read by looking at individual letters and then stringing them together into words. We read by rapid pattern recognition of one word after another, that we more or less string together into phrases, sentences, and ideas on the fly.

The human eye has a way of gliding, for want of a better term, across a series of words written in the expected pattern of upper case and lower case. When we hit the unexpected patter of all caps (or caps in weird places), our eye tends to bump and jolt across the text. When that happens, we're more likely to mis-read the text or to lose interest and move on.

It always reads like Darth Vader rasping to me, not like shouting.

I AGREE

If you know ANYTHING about the internet/chat rooms/forum posting, you know that all caps should ONLY be used to emphasize something, such as a word or two or an acronym, things of that nature. WHEN YOU TYPE LIKE THIS IT'S NOT A "DIFFERENT LOOK," IT'S YELLING AND IT MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE A COMPLETE RETARD. Now, maybe you're mad or feel very strongly about something. In that case, it is okay once in a while to post something like "STFU NOOB, QUIT USING ALL CAPS OR GTFO."

Thanks, and have a nice day.

Yeah, shouting is allcaps. And it's not just internet culture anymore -- the powers that be in the publishing world have agreed on this rule. Don't believe me? Pick up some of those Harry Potter books -- the shouting is allcapsed, occasionally.
