The Average Holiday Gain

Years ago, the average American gained 8 pounds during the season – today, some estimate our average gain to be almost 15.

It’s easy to give up and become average until January but it will make things harder later. So don’t let your guard down – keep watching what you eat and exercise right through the season. You’ll really appreciate giving yourself that gift in January.

I think if after the holiday we do a PEERtrainer poll to see how much we gained, I would bet that our average gain would be FAR lower than the national average.

I heard recent reports that the average holiday weight gain is only 1 lb. The problem is that we tend not to lose it, so in 10 years, you've gained 10lbs

Average Weight gain of 1 Pound Over Holidays

I have also read this report in the past 3-4 days, and it is much closer to my experience than 8+ pounds.

According to records I have kept over the past several years, I tend to put on 1-2 pounds over the fall and thru the holidays, then take it off after the first of the year when the days start getting longer.

For years people have been reporting that the average holiday gain is around 7 pounds. This is a myth, there have been studies done over the last few years that prove this to be inaccurate. The actual average gain is 1 - 2 pounds, but they also found that most do not lose that gain so over the course of 3 - 5 years it adds up. So forget what you hear about those huge holiday gains. After all we all know that even though we indulge more at this time of year we have to eat an extra 3500 calories above what it takes to sustain our current weight to even gain 1 pound, and if you weigh yourself every day you can easily avoid this happening.

Would the holidays be considered Thanksgiving through New Year's day?

I'm happy to say that with peertrainer I have stayed mindful of my eating and have actually lost a few pounds in the last month! It's really helped through the holidays. For some people the "eating season" begins with Halloween, for some with Thansgiving.
