What is the best shampoo & conditioner?

I am working out 6 days a week and my hair is starting to take a toll from all the shampooing. I use to be able to use conditioner to restore it but now it is barely doing anything for me. I have tried Tresemme, Mane & Tail, and Suave. There are some pricey shampoos and conditioners out there but would hate to buy one and not get any results. Any advice would be appreciated!

All that stuff you've been using is crap. I've tried every kind of stuff out there, including brands that cost 10-30 bucks a bottle. Kirastese, Aveda, Nioxin, you name it. I always go back to Pantene Pro-V. ALWAYS. It is the only thing that makes my hair feels, thick, smooth, healthy, and bouncy. I've learned through experience.

I use the basic Whole Foods 365 shampoo which smells great (peppermint). I feel like I am not putting a lot of chemicals in my head.

Eww, pantene coats your hair in wax!!! That's why it feels soft, and "repaired". All it actually is doing is coating your damaged hair w/ a waxy buildup that will take a lot more shampooing w/ a clarifying shampoo to remove. And that is only going to dry out your hair further!

Alright no Pantene Pro-v, keep the advice coming! What can I use? I have heard of folks using mayo and olive oil, would that help?

I was gonna say what 9:48 said about Pantene. I only use that stuff before special occasions because the silicone coating does LOOK nice.

I find Dove to be very moisturizing. My hair's never felt softer.

I think it's a very personal choice, a hairdresser recommended one but it felt awful...it depends on what you want from it. Some people love Aussie but others say it's grainy. I think if you use the same one all the time your hair gets used to it and you become a bit immune to it, I do love sunsilk though.

is it possible not to wash your hair after every work out? my hairdresser says that the oils are good for my hair and that I should not wash it after every workout - it works ok for me becuase i have dry hair and I can hold out a few days and it still looks ok -

i use Bed Head- Dumb Blonde shampoo and conditioner. it's great! it's for color treated hair, so it's gentle but it cleans well, and conditions without a waxy buildup. my hair is in great condition considering i put it through a lot of stress. i highlight, flat iron it every day, workout a lot and it's still healthy... good luck!

7:57- i wish i could do that! i have an oily scalp, when i wash my hair in the evening after a workout by morning just from sleeping it's greasy already. such a bummer!

I like Paul Mitchells tea tree shampoo and conditioner. Actually it is the generic brand of Paul Mitchells.
I have tried one other tea tree conditioner when I ran out and it was awful so I would suggest that specific brand.
I have used it for close to 9 years now and it is the only one that never makes my head itch.

I switch shampoos and conditioners up because I've noticed my hair looks a lot better when I do that. Its supposed to be a myth that your hair gets used to a specific shampoo, and it probably is, but for me that technique works. I have been alternating Aussie Moist with other stuff - the last bottles I had were Sunsilk Hydra TLC, which worked very well but I did get some buildup from the silicone after a few weeks. Instead of clarifying shampoo, I use Listerine to get rid of the buildup. It works great but doesn't strip your hair. Instead of going back to the Aussie Moist this time, though, I'm trying out their Catch the Wave line because I have wavy hair. We'll see how it goes!

I've been a faithful user of Neutrogena Triple Moisture Conditioner. That means a lot coming from someone who used to buy a different conditioner everytime I finished one bottle.

By the way, most conditioners and even many shampoos contain silicone (seen as dimethicone on the ingredient list) to give the the appearance of smooth and repaired hair. There is nothing wrong with that. Just be sure to get a clarifying shampoo. Everyone should have a clarifying shampoo anyway because styling products can also cause build up.

When you look for conditioner, make sure the moisturizers that they boast are near the top of the ingredient list not AFTER the list of preservatives, dye and fragrance.

Remember, a conditioner can only soften, shine and temporarily smooth the hair. It CANNOT repair your hair. Only a good cut can get rid of split ends.

I have heard that Pantene coates your hair in wax, and people say that like it's a bad thing! It's not!
First of all it's not wax. It's a substance similar to wax, and it serves a purpose, otherwise it wouldn't be in there. It makes the hair shiny and thick. Also, it protects it against breakage and heat damage. With my really long, somewhat thin hair, I have found that Pantene works the best to prevent breakage, and to keep it looking really shiny and healthy. I never get build-up. Actually, my hair looks better the longer I use it. So there, don't believe the wax myth!

I think that more expensive shampoo companies thought up the wax myth to get people to stop buying Pantene Pro-V. I was in a drug store once and asked a woman about some shampoops, and she went on this rant against Pantene and the "wax" it suppesedly has, then she said how she loves Dove and how it never causes build-up. Then, I looked at her short, stringy, damaged hair, and knew she wasn't to be trusted....lol.

As the 7:28 AM poster said, it is dimethicone a form of silicone used in dozens of shampoos and conditioners. It coats the hair and makes it smooth and shiny. It will build up if too much is used and it is best to use a clarifying shampoo once a week. The silicone does not harm your hair.

My advice is to use salon quality products, they are superior over the drug store level. They may cost a few more bucks, but you will use less product. Besides if you want healthy looking hair you must treat it well. There is a new color glaze product by John Freida, i've tried it and i love it. Super silky hair ! It does deposit a lttle color to your hair and takes three minutes. It is also a good idea to apply a weekly deep conditioning treatment. And try not to wash your hair everyday.

what's the best shampoo and conditioner?

I just want to warn you that Suave, Head and Shoulders and Pantene have chemicals in them that can lead to nerve damage. I'm not making this up, it was reported in the New York Times, the news, and from many studies done at Harvard University.

depends on your hair type, but

My hair is naturally pretty curly, but fine curly, so it dries out REALLY fast. My hair dries out a lot too from everyday shampooing (yes, I know I know, but I put mousse and gel in it and it must come out, plus gym...ick!) and from straightening all the time (lol)

Best product I've found that also works for my friends with straghter hair?
The John Frieda collections of 'beautiful brunette', etc etc. Pick your haircolor, and go! Conditioner and shampoo work amazing together.

Right now I am using John Frieda Curl Around shampoo and conditioner for my thick curly hair. It is very moisturizing without weighing down and the silicones make my hair frizz-free and shiny. I just use a clarifying shampoo once a week followed by an apple cider rinse and a deep conditioner (Pantene Time Renewal mask, which does have silicones in it). The apple cider rinse (1 part apple cider, 3 parts warm water) gets your hair super clean, shiny and bouncy so its like a "fresh start" for your hair. Plus its supposed to restore pH balance which makes your hair stronger and shinier.

My opinion on silicones is - yes, they coat your hair and eventually cause a lot of dulling buildup, and they are not great for the health of your hair. But they make your hair look really great and protect from heat styling. So I just use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of buildup, because the cons are less than the pros in my opinion.

If you have curly hair, a great website to check out is www.naturallycurly.com. Also, www.makeupalley.com/product has a lot of great reviews on beauty products so you can see what others think before you purchase.

And the comment from the all-natural girl...

Last summer, I switched to using baking soda and water (make a think paste, don't use too much) instead of shampoo. Then I dilute apple cider vinegar and use it as a rinse/conditioner.

No one else can tell (I've checked with all of my friends - "tell me the truth now...can you smell vinegar on my hair?"), and I actually think my hair looks better than before.

As an added bonus, I no longer have to use any other product - I have very fine, friz-prone hair that I wear wavy or straight to my shoulders (depending on how much time I have for blow drying that day).

I wash my hair every third day, and since I don't have to use any product, after the gym on the non-wash days, I rinse my hair in the shower, then I'm good to blow dry and go.

There's lots of info on this on the web. I've included a link to one of my original sources.

yes, they wash their fur with the shampoo to simulate what would happen to your hair...
BUT- they also make them swallow the shampoo and put it in their eyes to see what type of reactions they have that may be comparable to human reactions (both allergic and infectious).

Look at the first ingredients on the back of your shampoo.

Ammonium Laryl - The harshest you can get
Ammonium Laureth - Still very Harsh
Sodium Laryl - Better
Sodium Laureth - Much better

Sulfate-Free is the Best, of course.

Tresemme, Loreal, Suave all have ammonium in them. Don't buy that crap.

Some Pantene shampoos have ammonium while others don't. Check the label.

I highly recommend Infusium 23 conditioner! It is about $5 but better than most pricey ones.

I also love Got2Be Glossy which is about $3, but if lightly rubbed in the ends before blow drying, it works great.

What is the best shampoo & conditioner?

I have found that the best is the original, Breck. The best thing also is that at $1.00 for 20 ozs. I can afford to have beautiful hair and wash it sometimes twice a day. Once every 2 weeks I wash with something else, doesn't make much difference what just one quick wash. I have thick healthy hair and after 55 years it still has all the vibrance of my teens. I work out every day, swim four times a week and constantly wash my hair. It is never too dry, it is always bouncy and has a lot of body. Try it out.

ok. i work at a beatuy shop where we sell only the highest quality shampoos and conditioners. since you work out so often, you are losing a lot of water, and therefore moisture, in your scalp. also, the buildup of sweat and dirt from working out dries on your scalp--it is referred to as sebum, which cloggs your pores and prevents the hair from growing healthily. i would HIGHLY recommend you use a daily clarifying shampoo--the best one is by KMS. it is called KMS Daily Clarifying Shampoo and Conditioner. For added moisture and softness, use a light-weight leave-in. The best one we carry in our store is by Lanza. It is called Lanza Leave-in Light-weight conditioner. for extra shine, use a shine spray. There is one by matrix biolage. It is called Matrix Biolage Shine Spray. it does not provde any hold. using all of these products every day will not make your hair oily or gross. in fact, if you use them all in moderation, you will notice a natural achievement in your hair after about a month and a half.

by the way, all of these products can ONLY be bought in a professional salon. if you purchase them at a generic store such as walgreens or target, you will most-likely get a fake product.

if you or anyone else reading has any more questions on these products or if you need a reccommendation on a product for your hair, you can e-mail me at daniellacflores@yahoo.com

hope this helps!

overwashing is the worst thing you can do. try to only wash your hair every second day. overwashing your hair causes dryness the same way overwashing your skin does, which makes your body produce more oils so your damaged hair also gets oily quickly.

also if you swear by pantene, then you're being brainwashed by cosmo ads
:-/

most products that you can buy in regular stores are low quality products and you won't see much results from them. look around different salons at the products they carry. find the product that is best suited to your hair (curley, damaged, oily, color-treated, whatever the case...)

the extra few dollars you spend will be well worth it once you see the difference it really makes.

I don't know why people try to "moisturize" dead cells!

Hair is not alive. Like nails, hair is dead cells. You can't add vitamins to hair. You can't "repair" hair. The hair follicle is alive and that should be where your energy goes. If your hair is "damaged" due to excessive washing or repetitive chemical treatments, the best you can do is let it grow out and immediately discontinue these behaviors. Use a straightener to make all your individual strands of hair go in the same direction, reducing the appearance of damage. Coat your hair with a leave-in conditioner before straightening to avoid further damage from heat. Allow your hair to dry naturally. Use a shower cap after your workouts if you've already washed your hair once that day. Don't dye or perm your hair. Avoid chlorine, it is a corrosive chemical. Excessive exercise coupled with inadequate diet also has a negative effect on the appearance of hair, skin and nails.

I can't believe no one here has mentioned Alterna. As the above poster stated, a shampoo free of sulfate is the absolute best option, and to my knowledge, Alterna is the only company that promotes this. Even Kerastase, while I admit comes in a close second to Alterna, still has straight up sodium laureth sulfate. The Caviar line from Alterna also features seasilk and is second to none. Also, with all of the product diversion going on, I will only buy from the authorized salon that is listed on the product's official website. Don't buy from the grocery store, chain stores, or places like Trade Secret at the mall, because you never know what is in it. Trade Secret in many malls call themselves a salon but they are not. Notice there is never a stylist on duty, just a clueless sales person.

Aquage is not tested on animals. Tosca was a good product but Tocsa is no longer available. Alterna continues to change their formulas and in my opinion, is not a strong product as it used to be.

I use No-Poo Deva Curl...it's a non lathering shampoo that you massage into the scalp and then run the rest through your hair. I have very thick, course naturally wavy hair and my stylist recommended no poo - i don't have to use a conditioner - which is miraculous. Downfall - $35 p/liter - that is what my stylist charges and I think that is on the lighter side. However, no extra cost with conditioner.

I have very tangly, easily damaged hair. And I have found that any kind of natural shampoo is the best. I've used Bert's Bees and that works fairly well. My favourites are any moisturizing shampoos from "fruits and passion" or "the body shop" but these stores are only in Canada, as far as I know, so they may not be available to you.

If not natural shampoo, then Dove is not bad.

Another thing I think a lot of people don't realize is that the kind of shampoo you use is more important than the conditioner. A lot of people skimp and buy cheap shampoo and then buy good conditioner, because that's what makes your hair soft. But if you buy good shampoo, it won't damage your hair as much and you won't need as good of a conditioner to have soft hair.

Biologic, Paul Mitchell, Matrix are all really good to.
Bed Head is OK if your gonna spend the money get something else though unless this is on sale.

Aubrey Organics Swimmer's Shampoo and Conditioner- I used it when I was on the swim team and my hair was gorgeous. I still use it at the ocean and sometimes during the year to counteract the chlorine.

ALWAYS, always, get your hair saturated with water before subjecting it to the chlorinated water. Also, you can slick some conditioner on it before donning your swim cap. Happy swimming!

I've studied hair and it's a fact that pantene pro-v makes you lose more hair daily then you should yes your hair will feel soft and shiny but that's just on the outside of th cuticule on the inside your hair is dry, brittle and breaking,Redken is apparentely one of the best shampoo's out there instead of coating the hair like pantene does it actually penetrates into the hair to nourish it from inside, also what you eat has a strong effect on your hair try taking daily vitamins and eating lots of fruit and protein this will help your hair to become healty. Aloe vera also adds shine and moisture to the hair and so does vitamin e. Also you should use treaments weakly, put it on leave it on for 15 minutes with a warm towel around your head, this works miracles

I started using Ojon hair products about 3 yrs ago and will NEVER use anything else. It is made from these natural tree nuts found in rainforests. It is pricey, (because it is processed by hand by a tribe of indians) but you can buy it on QVC and do flexpay. I only have to buy it once a year, it is very rich and you only have to use a dab. It was the first thing I ever bought off of TV, but I was curious to see if it delivered what it said. They have a trial kit that is inexpensive you can buy to see if you like it or not. My hair has never looked better, and my entire family switched as well.
I am posting the link below to the official website, but its cheaper on qvc and there are even some distributors on ebay as well....check it out!

animal testing

Just thought you'd want to know. ALL P&G products are tested on animals. therefore pantene is tested on animals too.

In fact, while companies are finding alternatives to animal testing, P & G is a stoic advocate for animal testing because of the costs of alternative methods.

I'm not one of those people who rallies for animals, but your ignorant comment really shocked me. This information is pretty basic. Something you could get from a newspaper. You really should do a little research into animal testing.

No they don't "wash fur" to see how soft it becomes, but clip the animals eyes open or sometimes just use plain ol' staples and then add mascara, eyeliner, shampoos or anything they wnat to test in the animal's eyes to see if there is any burning or other effect. OR they administrate the products on open wounds. THis is just a sample of ways the testing is done.

I had no idea where to look to find you some more information on this so I went ot the only place I knew would have some information. Please read some of it.

Burt's Bees More Moisture Raspberry & Brazil Nut Shampoo

I read an article about how the chemicals to make suds are damaging so I switched to this and really like it. You can buy a natural bristle brush to distribute your natural oils through your hair, and only wash every third day. I was surprised to find that without all the wax and chemicals weighing it down, I didn't need to wash my hair everyday. What a relief! A good brush and playing around with hair styles helps on skipping days too ;) There are more products available all the time now that we know how chemicals absorb into our body and contribute to autoimmune diseases; eventually they will be banned, but in the meantime do yourself a favour and go natural!

As soon as I finish up the Burt's Bees, I'm going to try to Wen hair care line, here's the link.

i love love love biolage!
and i have to wash my hair every day - my hair gets all oily and itchy overnight, and that's with any shampoo - i have really sensitive skin.

i do a hot oil treatment like once a month and that seems to keep it healthy and no matter what, you should always get a trim every month.

it's expensive but it smells wonderful and it works. BIOLAGE!!!!

Lots of thick hair

I have lots of hair, I'm in my 40s. I can skip a day of washing. I probably wash my hair 4-5 times a week. I do workout 5 days a week. So, it depends on the type of hair you have to the type of product too. I have used Pantene. My daughters have really, really thick hair and curls. Pantene works fine. They wash their hair 2-3 days a week. I think our hair is very durable. I buy other products too, cat walk, matrix. I know there are lots of good and expensive products out there. My hair stylist wants me to buy $30 a bottle shampoo. I guess you have to find what works for you and your budget.

I think it depends on your hair type.

I have very thick hair and the only products I use are Biosilk and Biolage. They are amazing. I've never had better results. I get these products at a salon, but they are sold at most places. Most of the products that everyone has suggested haven't done well for my hair.

I always go for the most moisturizing shampoos, Garnier Fructis has a great sleek & shine shampoo, also Awapui shampoo is great,...but the key is to find a great product to coat your hair with after you towel dry. Try not to shampoo too often---on your days off/weekends don't shampoo. Your natural oils are great at rebalancing your scalp and hair to it's original beauty. A great moisturizing, frizz serum, leave-in conditioner does wonders for the managablility of your locks. I use Herbal Essences None of Your Frizzness, makes your hair very soft and frizz free. Also, salon selectives, frizz ease, & john frieda offer great products for conditioning. Conditioning is the basis for healthy hair. You just have to find the right product that works for your hair. Shampoo alone, is just the cleanser.

As part of a professional salon, our best advice is to pull a brittney and just shave it all off, therefore not having to worry about split ends and waxy build up! your head will always look shiny and fresh out of the shower.

I like Paul Mitchell and Urban Elements leave-in conditioner.I put color in my hair, so currently I am using Biolage color care shampoo. Best are shampoos and conditioners that are not full of chemicals, dyes, and alcohol. The best shampoos are made of more natural ingredients, otherwise they are damaging your hair.

The best shampoo and conditioner

I am a cosmotology student and so I'm not trying to coax any of you to spend a lot of money, but my personal preference is redken they have a great line, there to products that absolutly work they are smooth down shampoo and condithioner and all soft, these to like I said are both in the redken line. Smooth down is has macadamia oils and make your hair smooth, shiny and soft, then smooth down does have candilia wax in it, but I promise it's nothing like pantene pro V I hate pantene pro V because it leaves a film on my hair and no I'm not just saying this because I'm a Cosmo student. All soft on the other hand has avocado oil, and it works pretty well. Find someone you know that is in cosmotology and they can get you a cheaper price.

Anyone tried the Lush line of natural hair products?

Their shampoos (either liquid or bar), conditioner, leave in in conditioners, and henna dyes?

I'm thinking about forking over some cash (well, they are not really that expensive, but I'm a full time student so money is tight) but was wondering what other people thought of them first.

Thanks.

I know this shampoo that is Brazilian and really works. I have tried and saw some other shampoos but none of them did what it said it would. But once i tried one of their shampoos and it was like a miracle my hair lookjed GREAT. They are really amazing. They don’t use chemicals as other shampoos which can make the hair unnatural but they use fruits that are good for the hair. They actually make you hair healthier and look beautiful all by itself and it’s all your own hair. you can find them all online at www.nunaat.com I give them two thumbs way up!

I am a stylist and Ive been to alot of product classes. Drugstore brand shampoos are really bad for your hair. They not only contain bad silicones that coat your hair in a waxy substance, but they also have alot of dangerous ingredients for your hair, such as sulfate, sulfonate, TEA, MEA, sulfur, and parafins. And if your in a drudstore and come by a brandname shampoo, most likely it is deluted with wax. If the drugstore is selling it they can do that but theyre not allowed. They can get in alot of trouble for selling brand name salon products. There are a few shampoos that are ok such as L'Oreal, Garnier and Sunsilk. But Pantene Pro V is probably the worst shampoo out there. Im not saying every product you find in a salon is perfect, because most salon shampoos do carry some bad ingredients. I personally perfer Matrix Sleek shampoo. All matrix products have a new ceramide complex (oils) which keep the hair looking really soft and less frizzy all day. i also use a clarifying shampoo once a week which i think everyone should use to get rid of alot of buildup. You cant use it too often though because it will dry out your hair. I hope this helps :)

i just started using the joico k-pac line and my hair has never felt so soft and healthy. you need to use the really thick conditioner though. i think its called deep penetrating reconstructor. all other joico conditioners feel really thin as if theyre watered down. i also used to use the redken soft line and that does amazing things. it smells really good too. that line also has a heavy conditioner called heavy cream. when i feel like my hair really needs it, ill sleep with one of these conditioners in and wash it out in the morning and my hair feels so good. they are sold in salons so theyre alittle more pricier but what i do is type whatever i need in the google url and i usually can find good deals online rather than buy these at a salon. but if you want softer smoother hair look into these products. i swear by them. my hair is soo dry and frizzy and ive tried everything but these really helped me. the redken allsoft velvet whip is nice too if your someone who blowdrys or flatirons your hair everyday, this will protect it. and make it soft

From Pantene's Website - "Pantene products are not tested on animals"

SOURCE:http://www.pantene.com/en-US/article/FAQs.jspx#11

Question
Are Pantene products tested on animals?

Answer
Unfortunately some misinformation has recently appeared which may have compromised your trust in Pantene. Rather than trust wrong information here are the facts:

Pantene products are not tested on animals. Full stop. Nor do we ask any supplier or contract lab to test them on our behalf. All messages implying Pantene or any other P&G Beauty & Grooming product was tested on animals are wrong!
We passionately believe that ending animal testing is a benefit for all - consumers, animal welfare and industry. In fact, P&G is a global leader in supporting alternatives to animal research, having invested more than $250 million to date in helping to develop more than 50 proven alternative methods. We collaborate with governments and universities to promote acceptance of alternatives. If you want to learn more about our efforts, please visit http://www.pgbeautygroomingscience.com/

If You work out do this ....

When reviewing comments its sad to see that we still live in a world where Cosmetologists still regurgitate the same old stuff that has been passed on from one stylists to another for years ...

So the short answer is cleanse your scalp condition your ends and the only way to determine which ones are best would be to talk to a COSMETOLOGIST

Read Further for Clarification........
Cleansing your hair daily CAN dry your scalp CAN overly cleanse or "dry OUT" your hair, this is because the very purpose of a shampoo is to cleanse. By using SLS (SODIUM LAURYL and AMMONIUM LAURYL SULFITED shampoos (suave, PANTENE, ....) you are using a harsher cleanser and will remove more oils leaving your hair dryer and you are more likly to develop dandruff or ichy scalp. Professional AND "Organic", shampoos are not excluded however, because they still use surfactants; though distinctively, these surfactants SLES and TEA-Sulfates are not as harsh. So to avoid dry hair don't shampoo all your hair just "cleanse" your scalp. And if you must pick a time that is best I would state that the best time would be after your workout. Because this is the time when your body has released an enormous amount of toxic material.\\

The best shampoo is not one that cleans your hair, because as I mentioned they all cleanse infact dish soap can be used (though I would'nt reccomend it.) But as a COSMETOLOGIST I have to consider many factors in the environment from which you live, for example; do you have hard water? do you take medications? do you have a medical issue from genetic inheretance or social behaviors? and though it is not mine to assume sometimes the simple fact that COST can be a significant factor. However none of these factors prevent me from doing my duty and this is to ensure you have what you need.
It is a blanket satetment to say things like "..over the counter products are crap..." OR "..those conditioners leave a waxy buildup..." these are false and lack integrity on all fronts. First and foremost your hair is dead! dead! dead! the problem is that we think it has a "mind of its own" , it does'nt :(..... However, I do! and that is why I am writing this to let you know that you are doing the best thing for your hair by working out and if you are taking anti oxidants your hair will be strong and healthy as long as you eat healthy also.
STYLISTS are a dime a dozen, but a COSMETOLOGIST is a PROFESSIONAL and can not only distinguish what is best suited for your hair care needs but can also get you the best of what the manufacturer has available. Professional products sold in stores is what is left over when the distributor has failed to sell its 'quota". But I know of one product in particular that if it is not shipped correctly it will not perform, thats why you will not see it in a store and this is why you should allways get professional products in the salon (Preferably one that moves inventory.) I hope this helps
PS - YES the Professional Products at grocery stores IS the same as what s sold in salons and Diversion IS not done by stylists unless you know of a stylist that owns a large warehouse able to supply all the TArGET STORES in the US. The only person I know that has that much product is also the KING OF THE $10 HAIRCUT....things that make you go HMMMMM??????????

When I was in cosmetology school they sure didn't teach us which product was better than the others. We used shampoo that came in a vat.

And when I worked in a salon, we just pushed the products we sold. I'd never trust a cosmetologist to tell the truth about hair products.

I wash my hair at the most 3 times a week. I use Nutrisse, Herbal Essences, whatever is midway cheap for the shampoo. I use the conditioner that comes with my L'Oreal coloring kit. When I want to straighten my hair I use Pantene Products. DO NOT OVERUSE PANTENE PRODUCTS. I have average thickness, wavy, salt and naturally salt and pepper gray hair. I have naturally wavy hair, so 95% of the time I let it air dry. I only comb my hair when it is wet and has conditioner in it. The other 5% of the time I am wearing it straight. That mean I am using the comb and brush on it, a hairdryer, straightening iron, and big barrel curling iron. My hair is very healthy. My stylist loves and I only see her once a year in October before the Holiday season. The less you do to it the better. My one big vice is keeping it colored.

Seriously Shampoo & Conditioner???

before I close my account I needed to post a comment. Thread after thread people post their statements out to the universere hoping for an answer. What ever happened to personal responsibility? Everyone says that are looking for support....they are actually looking to be taken cared of there's a difference. One is healthy the other is not. Seriously the OP in this case can't make a decision on shampoo and conditioner? and doesn't even say what was wrong with the ones that were tried instead it's just please help me....do the work of trial and error for me. What someone is looking for support they clearly ask for it. I'm looking for a shampoo that can to _____or my hair type is _______ When someone wants to be taken care of they just make blanket statements hoping the other people will figure out what they want and give it to them. I've had enough! this site is clearly not a place for me.

Professional truth from a professional

the truth is as a successful hair dresser even in these trying times with economy everyone wants to make their dollar stretch, though by all means stay away from suave that crap is just tooo diluted and you'd have more of an effect with plain tap water. The truth is in my chair alot of the best hair I've seen have are users of tressemme and pantene. Because even though pantene "coats the hair" thats what most conditioners do for hair and lotions do for skin, once hair is damaged it's damaged. I am also a secret pantene user because of my profession, but I switch from pantene beautiful lengths to redken smooth down (I work at a redken salon and I live in florida where humidity is horrible wich causes wicked frizz), to pantene color treated, to redken real control, with redken chemistry shot treatments every month, and the pantene restorative deep treatment every week. Everyone loves my hair and swears I have the best hair in the world. And the truth is my hair has been bleach dyed fried and layed to the side lol. But it doesn't look that way because of what I do. I also use alot of products as well for major heat defense because I blow dry and iron my hair almost everyday. and for heat defense any brand that does a heat defense is good as long as it's not suave or herbal essences or anything in the suave category.

The best shampoo and conditioner, REALLY!

S Factor Color Savvy shampoo and conditioner! It's a sulfate free Shampoo, so it won't strip out any of your color! One of the biggest mistakes that people make when buying a shampoo is that it has way to many sulfates, which is a chemical that will remove the dirt, color, etc. from your hair. Now it can not damage your hair if you follow with a very good conditioner. I come from the same state as you, because I have such coarse, thick hair, it does tend to get very oily very easily, so I do have to wash it every night. I have tried every single shampoo and conditioner out there, Believe me, EVERYTHING! The best Shampoo and Conditioner you could ever put in your hair is - S Factor Color Savvy, or Bed Head Superstar! Now these brands of shampoo and conditioner are pricey, but BELIEVE ME, it is worth it to the max! Also, if you blow dry your hair use their smoothing products, it's absolutely AMAZING!! And one more thing, if you would like to gradually repair your hair if it's been damaged from coloring then I STRONGLY recommend S Factor's Serious Conditioner more then anything. I know that my hair was damaged pretty badly when I put blonde high lights in it, and after using the Serious Conditioner my hair has never been so healthy, strong, silky, and smooth in my entire life! My mom also uses all S Factor and Bed Head products and we both have the most amazing hair, and ALWAYS get compliments! So please look up Bed Head and S Factor hair products, I promise you 100% you WON'T be disappointed! All Bed Head and S Factor Color care shampoo's and Conditioners are sulfate free! Hope this helps!

Okay really everyone just stop!!! Everyone's hair type is different and in different seasons, your hair can be in different shapes... whether its not getting enough moisture from washing it everyday or too much moisture because you only use moisture heavy conditioners.. whatever the case you need to evaluate your hair or have a professional do it for you.. if its dry I would say use a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner.. if its highlighted use or damaged then use a protein rich shampoo and conditioner.. ( but nooooo more than once a week) too much protein can be bad for your hair .. for the other days in the week you can use your moisture products or just a daily care shampoo and conditoner if its too heavy feeling.... WHATEVER YOU DO!!! DONT USE PANTENE!! i can actually scrape wax off with my shears and show them what pantene does to their hair....so trust me its not a myth about the whole wax thing! not to mention your it takes alot more shampoo to work up a lather with the cheap stuff.. your money actually goes a long way when you buy quality products and your hair will be fantastic after it gets in better shape with consistent use!

Klorane & Aveeno

I've got really thick and curly hair, so my hair need extra moisture. I mostly use Klorane products, they are made out of natural ingredients and plants that are choose for their recognised activity. It works really well, and there is no wax and toxic things that usual shampoo contain. But it is pricey, so I used Aveeno too, which contain wheat and other good stuffs. These are really good shampoo for me.

If you want a really reputable website that has a complete listing of companies who do not do animal testing, check out Leaping Bunny. They offer a host of companies. Even those who claim they don't animal test even though they do. If you sign the pledge they send you a complete list by mail of the companies who don't. There are thousands of them, and most of them even I have heard of. Animal testing is sick and disgusting and the ass holes who do it are worse. I cry when I think about my darling Chihuahua Chico, or my sweet little rat Izzy being forced to do something so terrible. They need human testing. That's what the testing is for after all. Makes more sense to me.
Like I told my hubbs. If anyone tried to put something in my babies eyes I would blind them back. If they made them swallow anything I would make them swallow arsenic in return. Animal testing IS cruelty at its worst.

The absolute best shampoo and conditioner I've found for a clean healthy scalp and shiny, easy to comb/brush, manageable hair is something people usually laugh at, or look at me like I'm out of my head. But it really works. It cured the eczema in my scalp that I suffered from for almost 40 years. It made my hair soft, shiny, manageable, and looking good for 3 days. Rather than having to wash, blow dry and set every single morning.

I wash my hair with a solution of baking soda and water. Just a few tsps of baking soda in an old shampoo bottle, filled with warm water, then shaken to blend. I shake it before I wash each time. Then squeeze a little all over my scalp, massage my scalp and rinse well.

I condition my hair with a solution of apple cider vinegar and water. In an old conditioner bottle, I put in 1 oz of the vinegar and fill the rest of the way with warm water. Shake to blend. Each time I use it, I squeeze it directly from the bottle, run my hands through my scalp and down to the ends of my har, then rinse out with water.

These solutions last a long time before they need to be mixed again. So an added bonus is big money savings. A box of baking soda is about 45-50 cents, and a small bottle of apple cider vinegar is just a bit over a dollar.

Pantene = The Worst

My hairdresser told me that even plain baking soda would be better than any Pantene product.
To add insult to injury, when you buy Pantene (or any Procter & Gamble product including Olay) you're supporting a company with some of the cruelest animal testing practices on earth. So even if their garbage DID make my hair better, I rather doubt I'm the kind of person who would want to support a company like that.

Then don't wash your hair after a workout, especially if youre gonna wash it again in the morning. one can shower with out shampooing hair. I always use cucumber melon sented baby powder in my roots to soak up grease between shampoos, but try not to wash your hair more then once a day. my goal is 3-4 shampoos a week. Your natural oils will repair your hair. but the more you wash it the more oil it produces. But i understand that after sweating its difficult to not want to wash it away, so agian: babypowder!

I used to love this brand permasilk but they stopped making it. Nothing was better for my hair. No frizz after blowdrying. At all!

Now I switch between brands a lot but found that I like wella color protected shampoo and conditioner.

skip washing your hair every other day if possible. it's okay to condition it on days you don't wash it. plus, the oils from the day will help keep it repaired and healthy. don't forget about a weekly deep conditioning treatment!

I use Paul Mitchell (there are different kinds for different types of hair like moisture for dry hair, volume for flat hair, color care for colored hair, etc.) and Ion deep conditioning treatment once a week.
I have sensitive skin and these products work well for me.

I don't know if you're one of those people who has to blowdry and straighten/style your hair every day but pulling back on those will help preserve your hair. One day I'll wash my hair and straighten it, the next day I'll skip the wash and only condition it and let it air-dry and keep it curly or throw it in a braid or pony.

But I digress...

The best thing for damaged hair is to beat some eggs and message it in ur hair. Leave in for about 15-20 min(use cold water to rinse it out unless u want scrambled eggs in ur hair) but it makes ur hair feel healthier and shiny. Also usin a olive oil spray before u style ur hair with heat. It will make a big diff especially if u have frizzy hair

Pantene is the worst stuff to use in your hair. In fact...most store brand shampoos and conditioners contain so many fillers and wax is definitely one of them. I have only ever used professional products in my hair and it is extremely healthy. I don't wash my hair everyday...i sometimes wear a headband or hat and let the natural oils remain (very healthy for you hair). It is not a myth...professional products are the best. I have always used Joico Moisture Recovery Shampoo and the condtioner as well. It costs me about $48 per bottle but it lasts me over a year. Because you have been using that garbage in your hair, you need to use a clairifying shampoo to remove the buildup. I can promise you that if you give the professional products time to work their magic, you will never use crap again. Your hair just needs time to adjust to the change and it will thank your for it.

Giovanni Organic Shampoo and Conditioner

I love Giovanni's line they have many for colored hair or not. My hair is overprocessed it feels great. Also Eo organics. I will only use all natural and organic products on my head, it is too close to my brain to risk all the nasty chemicals, I also dont want seeping into the ocean and earth. Avalon organics pretty good. Nature's gate not so good but quite a bargain. Aveda pretty good but for conditioner I need to use a bit of the moss one. Paul Brown is ok.
Dont ever use products tested on Animals! Absolutely evil would you want to live in a cage to be proded and harassed every day. Sad.

I will maybe try the baking soda and apple cider im scared and im the all natural of the natural.
My hairdresser said to rinse with a conditioner so that you dont have to wash every day.

i have np idea why but everytime when i use my shampoo & conditioner (heads & shoulders because i have lots of dandruff or herbal essences), my hair is always really really dry, and its kinda wavy, i got it permanently straightened when i was on holiday in china, but its not as straight as how it looked when the hairdresser washed it, i used to use pantene but it gives me heaps of dandruff, does anyone know a good brand of shampoo & conditioner that wont make my hair that dry and is anti dandruff, thanks :)

here is a solution for your problem!

Clarifying Shampoo provides a deep clean without stripping the hair of natural moisturizers for renewed manageability. Formulated with shea butter seedcake extract, this powerful cleanser attaches to buildup—including nicotine, chlorine, and environmental pollutants—and washes away the signs of aging.http://tinyurl.com/shampoosolution

Sulfates

ALWAYS check the ingredients before you buy a shampoo. If it contains the word "sulfate," then you know you probably shouldn't buy it. Sulfates are very drying and damaging to hair. I guess you could use it sometimes but you have to be careful.

For a good sulfate-free shampoo, i strongly recommend Organix and L'Oreal products. I use L'oreal Paris EverSleek intense smoothing shampoo and the Organix hydrating macadamia oil collection.

Good luck!:)

Actually Pantene is PH balanced to your hair, which surprised my teacher when I went to hair school, because she was all about only using salon shampoos like Redkin. If you were having wax build up on your hair it was because it was a shine shampoo, not because of the name brand. All shine shampoos coat your hair in parafin wax. But Pantene or any other brand that is not shine shampoo is fine for your hair. Most stylists will tell you not to use Pantene or any other drug store brand. But that's because they don't make money off it. I don't know about the other brands but I do know that Pantene is PH balanced to your hair. I'm not saying it's the best I'm just saying it's not bad for your hair, unless it's the shine stuff.

Use sulfate free shampoos!!!

What you need is sulfate free shampoos! Those won't dry out your hair and make it really strong and healthy. I'm using Pro Naturals Moroccan Argan oil shampoo and conditioner. The argan oil really does the trick :D Each bottle is kinda pricey and I've only seen them online at a site called "beyas". But trust me, it's totally worth it. They got rid of my hair loss and my hair (which used to be very dry) is really healthy now. :)

Well at my salon we make sure to only use shampoos and conditioners that are free from sulfates and silicones, this is important as both are bad for hair and don't help it to become soft or shiny at all. Right now we're using one called pro naturals moroccan argan oil conditioner, and so far we love it, the argan oil has proved to work really well for preserving hair color and toning down frizz. Plus it makes hair really soft and smooth, and of course shiny. We're planning on getting more from that product line, we're ordering them off a site called Beyas, in case you want to look them up.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Try Loreal EverPure, sulfate free shampoo and the conditioner. Both the shampoo and conditioner come in a tube and can be a little pricey but worth it. I look for it when it goes on sale. It smells great and leaves your hair soft and shiny. I have try others to mix it up a bit but always go back to this one. Great shampoo and conditioner!

Hair Tips

It's a good idea to use a mixture of hair products for example Pantene dove, aveda. Mix it up a bit that way your hair won't get used to it. Use a wide toothed comb after washing your hair to detangle it instead of a normal hairbrush, it helps with split ends. Letting your hair dry naturally overnight in a bun will help make your hair healthier and add more bounce to it. If you have problems with split ends and hair breakage trim your hair regularly ideally every 6 weeks. Using cold water will help add shine to your hair
