Drinking?!?!?!

Ok now I am 22 so I still love going to the bars and drinking with my buds. Now, I know that a lot of beer can give you a good sized gut, now what about just hard alcohol like vodka or rum or tequila. I know that if you are mixing, then it still depends on what you are mixing with, but what about just shots, will they have as bad of an effect on your weight as beer will?

I'm sure they will.

Fruity drinks have a lot more calories and sugar, and drinks like white russians can pack it in. A glass of wine is always a great choice. Everything in moderation though, if you're going to throw down many shots, of course it will have an effect.

alcohol provides 7 calories per gram as opposed to carbs and protein (4) or fat (9). So yes, vodka, rum, etc will provide you with some extra calories, but if you mix with soda water or diet you are doing much better than drinking beer or sugary cocktails. I am also 22--and I love to party once in a while -- so if I know I'm going to be going out I try to save up some calories by eating a very light healthy dinner. Who wants to feel bloated at the club anyway?

I wish I were still 22! I'm nearly double that, but I still like my cocktails, and I'm very unwilling to give that up. I don't drink to excess, but I do like to have a drink or two once a week (sometimes twice). I try to stick to a white wine spritzer, which is better than straight wine, being mixed with club soda. If I'm out for a long night of drinking, I'll alternate drinks with plain water or plain club soda. Not only does that keep me a bit more sober, but it helps with the caloric intake. Just stay away from the mudslides!! ;-)

Try being - 2-fisted.... Get yourself a glass of water with a lemon or lime in it and drink lots of water in between the other drinks. Your tummy will fill up, and you'll tend to drink less. Or, do what I do--Buy a drink that you are less fond of-- you will tend to drink it more slowly...

As an aside,If your friends are "binge-drinking" and you're drinking more slowly, they won't even notice at all. (Back when I was in college, I didn't really care for beer, so I'd basically carry it around most of the night, drinking only a couple throughout the evening. Playing drinking games with others (such as quarter bounce) was entertaining--I'd just drop the quarter into the cup and everyone else was so drunk they wouldn't even notice.)

Of course, in general, it is not a good idea to binge drink for lots of reasons... There's also a reason why people call a big belly a "beer gut". All alchohol adds lots of calories!!

Don't forget, if you're doing shots with hard alcohol, the higher the proof, the higher the amount of alcohol (and therefore, calories). The sweet cordials (like Pucker, schnapps, etc.) also pack in calories from the sugar....

Bicardi has a new rum, Bicardi Breeze. It has 1/2 the calories of regular. So it's 50 cal/servng. I'm a huge fan of it. I mix it with diet coke for the occassional low cal drink. I love the idea of lower cal drinks for those of us who love to go out, but hate the caloric results! I hope other liquor companies follow Bicardi's lead.

A shot of vodka, rum, etc., is generally around 100 calories, as is a glass of wine. A light beer is around the same - some are a little more, some a little less. So, in terms of calories, not counting any mixers, etc., in a sense, a drink is a drink.
