Opinion--Should Women Hunt?

Hi everyone! I am a 32 year old women who enjoys hunting, fishing, manicures, pedicures, has a permit to carry, and have beautiful children.

I am getting ready for the big deer opener this weekend and have a trip planned for pheasant hunting. I was telling a friend of mine about our hunting plans this weekend. Her and her husband were appauled that
1--my husband would even consider taking his wife hunting and 2--that a female would hunt! I was surprised by their reaction, but in an effort to see all view points, I am asking for opinions from other members.

Kind responses only--we hunt for food on the table for our family, hatch and release pheasants several times a year to get the population back up, and feed the deer in the winter so they starve to death.

Why not? I fail to see what's appaling about it. This isn't like some primitive hunt where you need the greater physical strength of a man to drive a spear into a bison or haul an elk out of the bush. And even back then the women went along to do the butchering and begin the preservation of the meat.

Of course I come from a family of women hunters :-) I also work on cars and am handier around the house than my husband. Be proud of your skills. They are obviously of great benefit to your family.

I don't have the stomach for cutting up a carcass- that's what my butcher is for.

But if you're good with that, more power to you. I'm all for eating meat, and meat has to come from some kind of animal...

My mom has gone deer hunting with my dad ever since they were married. THey celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this summer. They also love to ice fish together in the winter. If it's something you enjoy doing and it is legal, why not???

Sounds to me that they are very sexist. Are you allowed to work? Does she? I think that females should do what ever they want.
so its not that they have anything against hunting- Bambi's mom hogwash- just that female's shouldnt?

THANK YOU everyone for your opinion and being kind. I know some people are against hunting and that's absolutely fine. I just couldn't believe they looked at me like dirt because I hunt. It's a way for us to spend time together, relax, put food on the table, contribute to Hides for Habitat, and pay my fair share to the DNR. When my children get old enough, they will learn how to hunt, too, if they want. I still enjoy being a woman and feeling sexy, but I think there's a nice balance.

the husband was upset because he feels men should be able to have hobbies without their wives. I agree with this completely, which is why my husband goes bo hunting every friday night, sat morning, sat night, sun morning and sun night during the season. that's his time, his hobby.

She was appauled because women shouldn't be shooting guns and sending their kids to grandma's for the weekend to go hunting.

again, i would like to see the other side of this topic if someone has a different opinion.

I'm 59 years young and have deer hunted for many, many years and although my husband of 40 years has always been a hunter he's never hunter deer. As a matter of fact I've been out scouting today and being sure my tree stand is secure.
So enjoy your hunt and pay no attention to those who know nothing about it.

Thanks! We went out this weekend and checked the stands and scouted, etc. Tonight i am going out before trick-or-treating and walking the path so on saturday morning, i'll be comfortable in the dark walking.

my husband and i used to trap shoot all the time, i LOVE it! but, i got tired of all the comments "can't shoot that gun with those pretty nails, you might chip the polish". ignorant morons!

a little story about nailpolish and category errors

Re nailpolish, OP, I used to coach ice hockey. And I paint my toenails. For late-afternoon practices I would often come straight from work (Fortunately I could wear jeans to work.) and sit on the lowest level of the bleachers while I stripped off my work shoes and socks and then put on my athletic socks and skates. Most of the guys (15-18 year olds) would be suited up and waiting for the Zamboni to finish, and their parents would also be milling around.

One day, one of the dads said, "Har har, I never saw a hockey coach with toenail polish before!" And I said, shrugging, "Now you have!"

For all people say about men being clueless to the emotional and political implications of such interactions, as teenagers they are not at ALL clueless. At the end of the season we had an outdoor picnic -- the weather was warm enough for sandals -- and ALL "my" guys who wore sandals wore toenail polish.

I did not grow up hunting, but married a man who farms for a living and goes hunting every fall. I quickly realised if I wanted to spend time with him I would need to go hunting too. He welcomed me, although it took a few adjustments to have a woman in camp. (We usually go in a group of 10-20) When the kids came along, I knew I would feel abandoned if he went without me, and I couldn't ask him to give up something he enjoyed sooo much. So, I packed (and packed and packed) up my 6 month old and off we went to the woods.
Now we have 2 children, 13 and 10 who both have been hunting every fall since they were born, and we all look forward to this family time and the time of rest from the rest of the world.
When I first started going I worked at a hospital, and all the women I worked with thought I was crazy. But the group I go with aren't a bunch of beer drinking woman bashers. AND I set it up that I help when needed with the cooking, but I AM NOT THE CAMP COOK. Sorry, didn't mean to yell. But it would not be a vacation for me to go cook outside for 10-20 men for a week and they all respect that and allow me the time off. ( I do follow the rule that if I don't have to cook it I'll eat it, no matter what they make. NO gripping.) I never have wanted to actually hunt. I have gotten very good at spotting game, and my son says that when he's old enough to hunt he's gonna go with me, because I always know where the deer are going to be.
Anyhow, that's my story.

Whatever, you should be allowed to do whatever hobby you like! My aunt is always appaled that I watch football and eat shrimp.I also remember my first real job all the ladies that worked there were surprised that I knew how to change a tire and the oil in my car.I was surprised that none of the other 10 knew how.My dad would not let me drive until I knew how to change a tire so I wouldn't be stranded in the middle of nowhere.

I love to fish but I never got into hunting.I don't think it is strange at all and I know lots of women who camp out for the weekend and hunt.The people who thought you were weird are weird in my book!

11:59: my husband taught me to change a tire and the oil in my car in case i should ever need to do it. He's also taught me how to back up a trailor so when we take our pontoon to the lake, i can back the trailor in the water while he's in the pontoon and gets it up to the doc and i park the truck and we go fishing and enjoy our day!

Hey, everyone. Just thought I would let you know I didn't get a deer this weekend. Saw a nice 4 pointer under my stand, but didn't get a clear shot, so I didn't take it.

If she wants to, and has been properly trained in the use of the weapon (gun or bow) and other safety issues. Don't pay attention to negative looks or comments. They come from narrow minded people. And I'm a person who doesn't eat meat but I wouldn't push my PETA values on you either...

I can tell right away that I do not divide the owners of weapons into men, women and children. You should know and be able to do everything if you have at least a hunting weapon in your house.
