I still see myself as a chubby girl....

I recenty lost about 50 lbs and reached my goal. I am 5'11" and fit into a size 10 pair of slacks. The issue here is, I look at myself in the mirror and still see the fat girl i was before. I hate this feeling.

Don't judge, and please no negative comments. I just wanted to tell someone.

I have the same feeling sometimes. I still see the fat in the mirror - it's like nothing has changed, - I can only really tell by putting on old pants. I think it might take a year or too and lots of compliements from friends before it really sinks in.

I can relate as well...I don't know if that feeling will ever go away for me and I'm kind of ok with it. It's a big part of who I am and I don't want to forget how crappy being fat felt.

I've lost 70 lbs and I see a normal-sized girl in the mirror, but my brain doesn't get it. I still look at clothes in the non-Lane Bryant stores and think "that'll never fit me". I dress like a frump, like I still have a puffy body that needs to be hidden. Shopping for cute clothes was one of the top things I wanted to do once I was no longer fat, but now that I'm there, I can't bring myself to buy anything nicer than a $10 turtleneck from Old Navy. So much for my dreams of rack-raiding at Ann Taylor Loft...

Wow! I have been the complete opposite. When I first lost my weight I was so happy when I looked in the mirror. And I shopped till I dropped. For the first time in my life I started to wear what I call "Look at me" clothing. Nothing hooker-esque, but clothes that don't blend into the background.

I wish I could figure out why you are not responding in the same way. I lifted weights as part of my weight loss routine and found new muscle that I loved along the way. Could that be part of the difference?

Im sorry hon, I get that way sometimes too and it sucks. I think post 1:35 hit the solution.
OLD PANTS.
my old pants are so big I cant believe they were ever snug.... and since I always avoided cameras I have no photographic proof.
but a sure fire way to shock myself into reality is trying on mah big ol'pants :)

I have lost 70 pounds and still have body image distortion. Even though my brain knows I've lost all this weight I look in the mirror and still see the fat person I was. And its been 6 years. I still hide my body. I don't know how to get over that. I used to wear a size 22 now I am a size 6/8 but i just can't seem to get pass the image I used to be.

I hear ya

I feel similarly. I've lost 45 lbs and in my mind still feel overweight, although when I look in the mirror I see a thinner me. My mind and the reality haven't caught up with each other. I agree with the other poster. I guess after a while at being at your new weight, you'll start to realize you are different.

There is an article in O Magazine (January 2008) that you must read. It tackles this exact subject.

i'm in a similar situation as the OP and 5:24, opposite situations... when i lost my weight i shopped and felt fabulous to go from an 18 to a 10 jeans. but recently my MIL took a photo and i swear i looked just as fat in that photo as i did in previous years. so there are times when i think i look amazing and times that i don't. i'm not sure what is causing this, maybe i don't look as good as i thought?

I'm right there with you. I've lost 80 lbs in the last 8 months. Started out as a size 26 and now I'm a 16 (or 14 on a good day). Depending on the day, I look at myself and see the changes. I'm so much leaner and stronger now. But I still have those problem areas- especially my mid-section and thighs. Also, since I lost the weight, my boobs look like deflated balloons. I do have my good days, though, where I look in the mirror and I'm like, "Damn! I look good!" But I totally can relate to what you're talking about.
