8 glass of water "myth" debunked

The British Medical Journal published the following on Dec 24th.

"The advice to drink at least eight glasses of water a day can be found throughout the popular press.w1-w4 One origin may be a 1945 recommendation that stated: A suitable allowance of water for adults is 2.5 litres daily in most instances. An ordinary standard for diverse persons is 1 millilitre for each calorie of food. Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.w5 If the last, crucial sentence is ignored, the statement could be interpreted as instruction to drink eight glasses of water a day.w6

Another endorsement may have come from a prominent nutritionist, Frederick Stare, who once recommended, without references, the consumption "around 6 to 8 glasses per 24 hours," which could be "in the form of coffee, tea, milk, soft drinks, beer, etc."w7 The complete lack of evidence supporting the recommendation to drink six to eight glasses of water a day is exhaustively catalogued in an invited review by Heinz Valtin in the American Journal of Physiology.w8 Furthermore, existing studies suggest that adequate fluid intake is usually met through typical daily consumption of juice, milk, and even caffeinated drinks.w9 In contrast, drinking excess amounts of water can be dangerous, resulting in water intoxication, hyponatraemia, and even death."

May not be new information, but the idea persists. And if it's new to the OP then it could be new to someone else.

I've heard this information many times over the years, but I still have it in my head that I need to drink, drink, drink. I at least feel better when I do, and I probably eat less as a result, too. I'll keep drinking my 64 oz - it's not enough to hurt and it keeps me from snacking or drinking soda so what the heck!

yeah that's ridiculous

You may not need to drink like a fish, but water consumption is a HUGE factor in weight loss for 99% of people. People who drink enough water (which I'm sorry is more than "2 litres" a day) feel fuller longer, have clearer, more bright complexions, and the extra water helps to flush your system of fats and toxins being eleminated while you exercise and sleep. And coffee? Beer? That's also the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Beer is alcohol! A system depressant and yeasty as all hell. That's like equating getting a serving of protein from eggs out of a slice of bread. Yeah, its in there somewhere! Pfft! And coffee...I'm not anti caffeine at all. God knows I was just as addicted to starbucks as the next man (especially during my freshman year in college LOL) but coffee is loaded with caffeine which is a diuretic! Makes you LOSE water through extra sweat or urination. Smh. Those damn Brits...
I'm going to keep guzzling. Water, that it. LOL

Maybe we can get water through other foods and such, I had seen that on a tv program. Sorry I don't remember which. But I don't think it does for your body what a good glass of water can do.
Maybe we can live off of the water from plants and such but is it going to do for your body what water can do?
I don't think so.
Good topic OP

Well, 8.03, AP Bio taught me that your idea will only help to a certain extent. Humans absorb a TINY amount of water from what they eat. Certain foods do block the absobtion of water though (alcohol is a main one...hangovers are actually dehydration), so avoiding that would help.

I drink approximately 4-6 12 oz glasses water daily... depends on the day and depends on how much salty food I've eaten

My comment: I think the British medical research bodies should invest more in encouraging their peeps to see dentists and less in discouraging them from drinking water.

Drink Glass

On the off chance that there is one wellbeing legend that won't kick the bucket, it is this: You should drink eight glasses Captain Man Costume Jacket
of water a day. It's simply false. There is no science behind it.
