PMS and fatigue during exercise

The past few days during my workouts, things that are normally fairly easy for me to do have been a struggle. I realized that my period will be coming soon and I'm wondering if any others have had exercise fatigue during PMS. If so, how do you deal with it?

I'm in the same boat right now. but as much as I want to be lazy on the couch I need to keep telling myself that exercise looses up cramps and will make you feel better afterwords

absolutely... overall fatigue and muscle aches...oh, and my breasts hurt too. Not to mention the water weight gain, cravings for sweets, and mood swing. I simply reduce the intensity of my excercise, but still maintain a 3-4 times/week of workout days. Insteading of running, I walk 30min-1hr instead or really, really slow 30min ellipitcal, and more streching/yoga sessions. Don't wuss out thought. I know it's pain in the ass, but if I couch the week of PMS that's 1/4 of the month. Then, after the TOM is over, I had to re-build my fitness routin again. I did that for years, and finally bite the bullet and continue to work out during the week. I decided not to let PMS to be another excuse that prevent me from getting to my goal.

The change reflected on my weight loss. Besides, excercises actually help to reduce PMS symptoms. So, after a couple of months, my PMS symptoms are less intense. Even 2 times/week for walking is better than nothing. Take it slow, just don't couch the excercises routine.

Yes!!! I get lethargic, lazy and tend to devour foods that I normally don't eat. Once my hormones stabilize, I'm back to normal. I allow myself treats during this period. (no pun intended)

I was taking a very intense martial arts class full of men. I was the only gal most of the time. I found that during pms I was having real trouble keeping up, whereas normally I was ok. I'm no longer in the class but I do run. Now I find that pms running = severe cramps so bad I have to stop running and walk it off. The cramps last for a few minutes but eventually go away. Then I can run again and I'm fine. I really hate it though. Especially if I'm running with a guy. UGH!

OP here. Thanks for all the feedback on this. I'm on that birth control that only makes you have a period every three months, so thankfully I don't have to deal with it too often. Yesterday I was able to complete a 1-hr workout of normal intensity, so that was good. Hopefully things are returning to normal.

I've experienced fatigue on the 2nd day of my period. I skip the gym that day and either walk or swim. I'm still active but change my workouts to accomodate hormonal fluctuations. I also find that my muscles seem tighter at the beginning of my period so I'll take a yoga or Pilates class.

This is the first time i have EVER heard that someone has the same problem with cramps while running before my period. It starts about 2 weeks before and everytime I run, about 10 min into it, I get cramps that get progressively worse if i do not stop and walk them off. Once i start running again, i am fine. it doesn't happen with biking or swimming, just running and it really is such a pain! in fact, i have a basketball game tonight and i know i'm going to get them but we will not have subs so i can't stop and walk them off. i'm bracing myself! thanks for posting...... i wonder why these cramps happen though?

PMS and working out

I have the same problem. When I have PMS all I want to do is sleep. I PUSH myself to work out and realize that at least I'm at the gym, not on the couch. Hormones are hard to fight so I cut myself a break and do a less vigorous workout and watch my sweat tooth!

Right before my period, I have more energy than normal and it's easier for me to workout. But as soon as my actual period begins, however, I can hardly get out of bed. I usually end up calling off work at least one day a month because the fatigue is so bad.

I would also love to hear any one's suggestions on how to combat this.

Most women use this time as an EXCUSE TO DO NOTHING.

So weird.
