How big is a pound of fat compared to a pound of muscle?

I've tried to look it up, but I get widely differing answers.

my trainer tell me that a pound of fat is about 2-3x larger than a pund of muscle. And, 1 lb of muscle is about the size of your fist. I hadn't verified that though, but he has been lifting for +10 years. So, I figured I could trust him somwhate... :)

At my gym we have a model of 5lbs fat next to 5lbs muscle - amazing motivation! Here is a photo I found online of a 1lb comparison - the difference doesnt look quite as startling when you are only using 1 lb models:

Muscle is 18% denser than fat

So if you had a pound of each the muscle would be 18% smaller than the fat. 2-3x is a gross exaggeration.
