Gold's Gym, or other big gym chains

I am considering joining Gold's Gym. Who else is a member? How much do you pay per month, and what start up fees did you pay, or did they waive them? I'm willing to join I think for $50 (I'm guessing that's what the monthly fee is) but I think the enrollment fee is a joke.
Before I meet with the Membership Director I'd like to know what other people are paying.
If you belong to Baly's or 24 hour fitness, I'd be interested in their pay structure as well for comparison.

I also go to 24 hour fitness, but i pay $40/month and can go to any 24 hr fitness across the country. I can add a family member for another $20/month so then it'd be about $30/month each which is reasonable.

I go to Gold's in Austin, Tx. We have 13 gyms in this area which makes it very convenient for me. I go to one near my work at lunch a few times a week and one near my house afterwork and on weekends. They also offer childcare which my daughter loves. I pay $20.99/month through a corporate membership. I had to pay $78 enrollment fee. My husband joined after the new year and he got his membership for $30/month and no enrollment fee. Be prepared...they REALLY push the $50+ per hour training packages.

My hubby and I invested in a treadmill when we figured out that with 2 memberships, we'd be paying about $950 a year for Gold's Gym.... For that amount, we got ourselves a really nice Nordick Track (we also sprung for the additional warranty) that has a lifetime warranty on the motor...

Gold's gym poster here. My husband just walked in and got that price. He didn't have to haggle. I think it was the New Years deal for January. I am sure clubs in different areas are different but it doesn't hurt to call up and ask. If they tell you that you have to go in to get the quotes (which they will do) just tell them that you have already checked out the clubs and are more interested in pricing.

i go to ballys

i go to ballys in suburban chicago. i pay $16.50 a month for my wife and I i have been going there for three years and just found it out yesterday that the programs they have there the yoga, spinning powerflex classes are all included in my membership. i used to work out on my own in my own lil world working out in those classes really discplines u and gets u going. I would reccommend ballys if u are able to sign a three year agreement. or else i would reccommend LifeTTIME Fitness which is state of the art.

There can be huge variations within the chains especially with franchised locations (rather than corporate-owned). The majority of Gold's are franchises, and quality, service, pricing vary a lot.
I paid about $100 up front and $29/month for a one club membership in a corporate Gold's in the Washington DC area. This was somewhat discounted because it was a new location. I think "retail" is about $49/month for all clubs in a limited area or somewhat more for a larger area, but may be reduced if you agree to more up front, a term commitment or both. There are always promos.

You can bargain at the gym!

Most people don't know that getting a gym membership is like buying a car. Try using the same tactics and you will get a lower rate. I belong to LA Fitness in San Diego and pay $23/month. Yes I did prepay for 3 years but I was just interested in the lowest per monthly rate. I knew I would always go.

Try saying "oh that is too high" and get up to leave. I guarantee they will offer you something lower. If you have the patience and can negotiate; you will get to a great rate.

Ballys trick

I joined Ballys this summer while I was temporarily stuck in St. Louis. I worked across the street from a Ballys, and went in to ask about a temporary membership. They convinced me to get a regular membership (3 year contract) that I can take to any Ballys in the country, for $40 per month. Now I use the Bally back home in NYC for that price, and I'm pretty sure most other people there pays at least double. So if you live in an expensive area, and travel a lot or have a relative or something in a cheaper place, see if you can get a nation-wide deal like this.

I think that's about the pricing at my local Gold's Gym...
I didn't actually inquire as to whether or not they offered family rates...
However, at about $100 down and $70 a month ( the cost for the 2 of us),
that equals about $940. Enough to pay for our treadmill (Plus, we have taken to bringing our lunches, which should save us another approx. 3600 a year..)
Between these 2 things, we would more than pay for our treadmill... :-)

At the very least, we would have something to show for our money (besides our fit bodies) AND, we could continue to use the treadmill for years to come vs. what most people do-- which is to start off strong at the gym and then eventually stop going... (happened to us when we first got married--after we moved to our current house, the nearest Bally's was "too far" away (i.e. we didn't want to go through the hassle of going at least 15-25 minutes away to work out (which would add and additional 30 -50 minutes to our work out "time"....

Just an observation... :-) Of course, it is quite motivating, if you get to know some of the people at the club and they help keep you going... :-)

I live in the Seattle area and go to 24 hour fitness, have been a member for 6 years and now pay $107 a year ($8.92 a month) the first year was much more expensive at $26 a month then I prepaid for 2 years at a much lower price then my monthly and for the last 3 years it keeps getting lower.

I belong to a high end gym (not a chain). It's about a $100 a month and I love it because it's nice. They provide towels. It's always clean and they are helpful. They also invest in new equipment and it makes working out easier.

Some people have more dedication when they know they are paying for a place to go. I know I am one of them. I have a very nice treadmill and elliptical trainer at home and neither gets used all that often. However, I like going to the gym because I have met many friends there and once I get there I am not going to turn around and go home. Having a peice of equipment in my house doesn't do all that much for me. All people are different though.

I talked to a membership rep at the Sacramento Gold's location. The start up fees are about $200 and the monthly membership fee is $59. I think this is a lot of money compared to other gyms. I brought this up to her, she talked about how they have newer equipment than other gyms, yada yada yada. I asked her if the pricing was flexible, she said no. I mentioned in Austin they offer no start up fees and $30/month membership, she said other franchises charge different fees. I told her their price was too high, and that was the end of the conversation, she did not offer any discounts.

Considering I have access to a free gym at my office with weights and an eliptical machine, and I never have to wait to use the equipment b/c the gym is barely used, I have a hard time justifying $60/month and $200 in start up fees to take some classes.

This is kinda tricky but you can buy a Gold's gym membership in any city within 50 miles of your home. If you go outside of 50 miles you have to get a travel pass. I used to live in California and am wondering if you call the Roseville or Citrus Heights store if it will be cheaper. Just an idea. I know the bigger cities usually have higher rates.

One step ahead of you. I called another Gold's gym franchise. You can use other Gold's gym locations within 50 miles, but only 6 times a month. I plan to use my local gym 4-5 times a week, so that won't work. The other location was a lot cheaper though, they were $39/month for Granite Bay and Roseville unlimited usage.

Thats strange because I live and work about 30 miles apart. I signed up at the gym in one town (where I work). I go there three times a week. Then I go to the one near where I live on the weekends and the other two times a week. Neither location has said anything and I sure hope they don't! =)

Do you belong to a Gold's gym? Some gym's are franchises, some are corporate owned. If you are going to gyms that are owned by the same francine owner, or corporate owned gyms it doesn't matter where you go and how often. If you know you are going to two Gold's gym locations in the Sacramento are owned by different franchises, I would definitely like to know about that.

I go to the 24 hour downtown sacramento (at the K street mall). And I love the classes. I know they are offering deals right now. I'm meeting with my trainer tonight and I'll ask him about rates and see if I can get you a free pass for a couple of weeks to try it out. Would you be interested? Also try California Family Fitness. But DON'T sign a contract. A friend did that and then she moved and now she pays for gym she doesn't even live in the same city as!

Thanks for the offer. A couple concerns I have about 24 hour is that I've heard it's a major meatmarket, more so than Gold's. Also, do you have to pay for parking? Are the classes crowded? They sure are at Gold's, but then all the regulars keep telling me that this past week is the busiest they've ever seen it, and they have no incentive to lie to me about that.
I'd be interested in what your trainer says about any promos/pricing.

What classes do you attend there?

I don't think there's a CFF center nearby. I live and work in Natomas.

24 hour girl

Yes, I have heard people call it a meat market, but I don't socialize at all while I am there. I don't really pay attention to other people either. So I guess it just depends on the person. It's my "me" time so I don't pay much attention to that stuff.

You don't have to pay for parking. When you go into the parking garage you get a ticket and then you just take it with you when you check in and they validate it for 3 hours.

The classes are somewhat crowded (especially since new years and everyone's resolutions) but on a positive note the teachers and classes are the best I have ever been to. Everyone is also really nice and social in the classes and you make freinds which helps me in going more often. There are also ALL levels of people in the classes so I don't think they are very intimidating.

The classes I have attended (I love them all) are spinning, kick boxing, step (all levels), boot camp, yoga, and a full body weight lifting class.

I'll talk to my trainer about deals and I'll even ask him his opinion on other gyms in the area. I'll write back tomorrow!

Gold's Gym

I would check to see if there is a Peak Fitness club in your area. They are growing by leaps and bounds in our area and basically putting Gold's Gym out of business. The normal fee for Peak Fitness if 29.99 month and they are open 24/7 with all of the equipment you could think of and every type of fitness class you can think of, even on Sundays.

Don't Care for Gold's or Bally's

These are chain facilities, I have been a member of both in different locations and found the trainers on sight to be mediocre, the facilities are ho-hum, and overall I've never been impressed. Plus they are expensive for what you get. I have been a member of Lifetime Fitness; although they don't have a ton of clubs, if you do find one near you, it is well worth the investment!

I am a single 24 year old and i love m gym. I pay a little more than most people but i go almost everyday.

But i use the classes. I spin 3-4 times a week and than step the other days. They have such a variety you cant get bored and on top of that, they have classes at almost every hour of the day from 5:30 am until 8:00 pm at night.

They evrything you could want a spa, pool, sauna, heat room, weights. i have never had to wait for equipment and best of all its never felt like a meat market. I am totally comfortable working out with the boys and the staff is wonderful.

If you want to commit to a gym and feel good about going everyday join Cal fit. you will never regret it.

Lifetime Fitness (chicago burbs). We have a family pass and it's 99.00 per month. I think a single is 45ish?

There are too many amneties to list, it's actually a fun place to go to as a family. (put the kids in childcare, workout, steam room for a while, pick up kids, eat lunch outside by the pool, swim for 4 hours).. yeah, it's a fun day and worth every penny!

i joined gold's gym about a year ago - i chose them for geography only since they're absolutely the closest to my house.

my membership fee was $150 for a familiy membership
monthly dues are $85 - again family, not individual
price includes all classes and all gyms in the metro area (tampa / st pete / clearwater / sarasota)
i didn't get the training package
i signed a 2 year contract
prices were lower for that gym only, higher for gyms nationally.

i honestly think the best deal is the ymca. it is cheaper, you don't pay an enrollment fee, they are very family friendly, and you don't have to sign a contract. the dues don't cover some classes, but member enrollment for those classes is usually between $15-30 for a 12 week class, so still a good deal. you can also sign up for their special classes without being a member, you just have to pay more. unfortunately the one here is absolutely too far in the opposite direction from work, and i know i'd never go.

i just did the 9:32 post. my gold's gym membership covers metro gyms. if i paid less each month and less for enrollment, it would only cover that one gym. if i paid more each month and more for enrollment, it would cover gyms nationally. i don't think i explained that clearly before.

Hey, I'm from Philly. Joined LA Fitness for 152 starting cost, and 32 per month. Really not worth it. If I were you, I would use up all the free trials you can get at all the gyms (Like 2 weeks at LA fitness, and 1 week at Bally's, etc...) Then, I would compare the prices and pick the best one. Usually, you can get them to really lower the price if you threaten to join another gym. Just say, "Well, this gym is offering me 5 bucks less a month and a free training session!!). Gyms are like credit cards, you can get them to do almost anything if you threaten to leave.

Last year I was a member at Gold's Gym and NC. I didn't care too much for it. I always tried to go after work and half the time I went, all of the elliptical machines were being used. I also tried to take a couple of classes, but they were too low impact for me. I think I paid $100 enrollment fee and $32/month. As everyone else has said, being a franchise, each location can be completely different.

Bally Total Fitness

Bally's is a chain, but it's what I can afford. Don't hate me for stating this, but it's true... I joined this "chain" back in 1982 when it was Nautilus Aerobics Plus. They put up a construction trailer on an empty lot then, but I waited patiently until it opened. At that time I signed a lifetime contract for $50 a month. When they sold to Bally, they changed my contract to reflect the cost of living per year. The last time I paid for three years (that's all they let you renew for at a time) was $175 or so, for THREE YEARS. I have a friend who signed up when I did so many years ago and his contract slipped through the tracks and he still pays $50 a year. Stinker.

Bally may be a bit of a ghetto in certain locations, but if you watch the germs and are selective where you go, it works. Sure, there's no towel service and the trainers all have second jobs. Half are mediocre. I happened to have had an awesome trainer who knows his stuff nutritionally besides physically.

I've been to Bally in North Hollywood, Riverside, and San Bernardino, CA, but frequent the Studio City, smaller gym which is closer to my house. However, while on vacation in Toronto, the Bally facility at Younge and Bloor Streets downtown was beautiful. As well, my membership extends nationwide.

If you're looking for a beautiful place, check out BodyImage in North Hollywood, CA. Those are some awesome folks.

Gold's Bargain

I just signed up in Salt Lake City, UT for $899 total for my wife and I both for 3 years. I pre-paid, as I had the ability and wanted the best deal possible. That was for their V.I.P. membership which includes the raquetball, free unlimited tanning, pool, sauna, jacuzzi, free workout classes, and my gym also has the Cinema Aerobics where they have a theater room with exercise equipment to help those of us who get bored exercising. It's a top notch facility and I did the math, and I'm paying only $12.50 a month for each of us. I had a similar deal available for 24 hour fitness, but the facility for 24 hour fitness around me isn't so great. If you can prepay the membership dues up-front, you save plenty. My brother had a 2 year contract with his fees being $50 a month for his wife and him together. This was the best deal for a really nice workout facility in my area. I hope it helps someone.

I went around to the commercial gyms in my area and did trial memberships (one was a month free) and I talked with trainers. There was pressure to sign but I was coy. Said I was still looking around.

Then I found the deal of the century. The University in my town has a gym that they open to the public on a limited basis. There is no signing fee and you can sign up for 3 or 6 months or a year and the price ranges from $25 to $18 a month depending on how long you join (flat fee). There are training packages that are really reasonable too...mine was $50 for 10 sessions. The guy had his degree in exercise physiology too!

So look beyond the commercial gyms because you may find a whole lot more in a different setting. My gym has a field house walking track, a pool, a beautiful weight room, basketball courts, pool tables, a yoga/dance studio, hand ball courts, great classes, a clean well maintained shower and locker area, etc. There are U students and faculty and those of us from the local community who are members. I couldn't ask for more!

I used to belong to Fitness 19, which is a smaller chain but can be found in many states, and I paid $15 a month without a contract. There was no enrollment fee (they may have waived it, I can't quite remember) but I had to pay for the last month of my membership upfront, which in all honestly made canceling a lot easier because I owed them absolutely nothing.

I would still be there, but unfortunately I moved out to the middle of nowhere and there aren't any Fitness 19s where I live.

As a previous poster said - I prefer the YMCA.

I pay $50 a month for the whole family (in Kansas) but it's less than $30 for a single person, I had no enrollment fee because I signed up during a promotion time but the enrollment fee is usually just $50, I don't pay any extra to take most classes, and there is no contract. You can't beat it. They will also reduce the monthly fee for lower income families.

Also, my Y is just as well equipped as any for-profit gym!

Gold's gym vs. 24 hr. fitness

So all the reading.....very little reference to Gold's prices......any one have a 'bottom line'?

I too would like to know, in advance, what Gold's charges in the Marin area...re: haggling, 'come in for price' etc...I'm not interested in buying a used car or any experience like it...I'm just interested in what a gym membership cost. Some 7 or so years ago I accepted a deal from 24 hr. fitness for a 3 year in advance cash price with an annual cost, all clubs - sports or lower- (read, sauna, pool, etc) for $20.00 per year...yep...$20.00 per year. I've come to read that the local 24 hr. fitness near my soon to be new home is double 'D' as in Ddouble Funky and the really nice 24 hr. fitness that is worth going to is a $5.00 bridge toll away, every time...so? Gold's or no Gold's? (2 miles from 'ground zero, Mi Casa) that's the question.

OP: you have to decide: what is it worth to YOU... For me, the gym HAS to be on the way home from work, so I'd pay more for location since that way I know I'll get my money's worth... Also, I am huge into classes... so I could have joined 24 hr but they have no classes so, again, I pay a bit more for the private gym in my area. But do realize they ALL try to screw you with month to month vs.. "buying down" with a deposit.. bla bla bla... go in there with a top price and then be determined to get it one way or another... sucks, but it is like buying a car :( GOOD LUCK... I do like Golds because of the classes, went there for a free week until I realized its just too far for me to drive...

Nov 25th - call up Gold's and just stand firm that you can't come in and you just want to know the price of a membership. If it's in your budget THEN you'll come in to check it out. I move around a lot and have had to join many gyms and I stopped going in for the 'the chat' a long time ago! I've never had a gym refuse to give me a price over the phone - and I've never had to be rude - just as insistent as them.

And if it were me - the closer the gym and the less hassle to get to - that's my winner. It means I'll actually go! A great new gym was built .30 miles from my house, but I ended up going to one 3 miles away b/c the new gym required metered parking and was in a popular shopping and business district, which meant it could be a pain to get to at certain times of the day and week. So, even though it was so much closer I knew I would let those factors influence my decision to go!
