How do you sweeten your oatmeal???

Hi all,

I started having oatmeal for breakfast, and I love it. However, I would prefer it a bit sweeter (I don't like it salty, so right now it's a bit bland), but I don't want to put too much sugar into it, and I try to keep away from artificial sweeteners like splenda. Any input?

Thanks in advance! :)

If you cook your own, you can cook it with 1/2 water 1/2 apple juice. You can also add a chopped apple during cooking.

Good idea pp! You can also add some cinnamon which is great for you! Or non sugar maple syrup.

When I cook my steel cut oatmeal, I put in some cinnamon and vanilla extract. When I eat it, I add some fresh blueberries (or even frozen in the bottom of the bowl, then put hot oatmeal on top) and a drizzle of honey. Yum!!

These are all great ideas! I like to add a teeny bit of brown sugar or a few sprinkles of cinnamon and nutmeg. I love oatmeal :)

How about a tiny amount of real maple syrup?

I actually don't put anything in mine. Just use plain old fashioned style oatmeal and cook it lightly so the oats have some "chew" left. They are mild and slightly nutty and really understated but they taste really good.

I used to put a little maple syrup in but discovered I don't really need it.

OK this may sound gross but I went with it and now I don't eat it any other way. The sweetness in red seedless grapes work perfectly. One grape per spoonful of oatmeal. Sooooo good, then add a bit of cinnamon.

I hate instant because it is not at all good for you. So at work I poor the slow cooked oatmeal into a foam cup and add enough hot water to cover the top of the oatmeal. Then just let it sit like you do with cup of noodles. It is done when all the water has been absorbed into the oatmeal. takes like 4 minutes, and does NOT work with steal cut.

My doctor stirs 1 Tbsp peanut butter and some bluberries into hers - haven't tried it yet.

I love it with REAL maple syrup, if you just put in 1 tsp it is only 35 - 40 cals, and so worth it.

Vanilla Spenda packets

One packet of vanilla splenda per 1/4 cup of oatmeal. And I cut up some apple and sprinkle a little cinnamon, its Delish!

Pp -- so funny, I just got agave syrup from Trader Joe's today... never had it before, so I figured I'd give it a try (probably tomorrow morning in my oatmeal)!

I chop up 1/4-1/2 apple, 1tsp applesauce, cinnamon, nutmeg & allspice. thats w/ 1/4 cup oatmeal. Mix it all together on the stove or in the microwave & I love it, I love the crunch of the apples & the taste of everything else. I only use nutmeg & allspice sparingly, but I love cinnamon, I also use water instead of milk for the oatmeal. Hope this helps.

Has anyone ever tried shredded carrot in their outmeal? I was just thinking about those yummy morning glory muffins with carrot, apple, walnuts, rasins, and coconut. I wonder if it would work in oatmeal form? I think I'll try it tomorrow and find out.

FYI: to the person who cooks their oatmeal in a foam cup--you may want to switch to paper--the foam adds a lot of carcinogens when heated up....(Not good to cook in any styrofoam containers!)

I add the following to my oatmeal:

Golden raisins & Dried Cranberries (You can buy these in a big bag from places like Sam's Club.)
A dash of vanilla
Some Cinnamon or Pumpkin Pie Spice
A little milk

Very yummy....sometimes I will add agave nectar, but I tend to stay away from any types of sugar or sweeteners and let the natural fruit sugars flavor my oatmeal.

Every so often, I might get one of those tiny creamer containers of hazelnut coffeemate and add 1 of those in my oatmeal....

Wow! There is a lot of great input here! So positive!!

I ususally buy the instant oatmeal that has apples and cinnamon or raisins and spice. If I make regular oatmeal I will be sure to try some of these suggestions! Thank you all!
