half and half or milk?

I cant freakin tell how many tablespoons I am adding to my coffee at starbucks etc... I figure half and half is worse because although you need less to get the flavor its probably more than 2 tblspoons( 40 cals), plus its higher in fat. But when using skim milk i add more. I usually opt for half and half but I have a feeling thats not the right choice? especially since i'll have coffee or tea with half and half added a few times a day. Should I switch to milk?

I think that coffee with milk, or even worse - skim milk, tastes and looks awful. I usually drink my coffee with half and half, but if that is not available or I've used my calorie allotment for the day, I've learned to enjoy black coffee.

You could always bring a tablespoon with you if it's that important, or as above, learn to go without. But it's also personal preference... some people don't mind skin milk in their coffee.

I always drink coffee with skim milk because it's the only thing I keep in the house! I like it! They also make fat free half in half that you can buy in the stores, which does make the coffee taste richer than skim milk.

As for what to do at Starbucks, I would choose the extra calories in skim milk over than the fat grams in half in half. I try to limit my fat intake to 20-25% of my total calories, and it's amazing at how quickly they add up.

My sister, who drinks a LOT of coffee, switched from half-and-half to milk and cut the sugar she was adding in half, and lost weight. I don't know how much weight but she wasn't even exercising and you could see the difference in her weight (over the course of a couple months).

hey, no rocket science here

Why don't you just bring a Starbuck's coffee cup home? Then fill w/ water to the point it's normally filled to. Then add more water 1 T at a time until it's as high as it usually is with milk. Then you will know!

Personally, I'm a drinker of skim milk in coffee. it has a LOT fewer calories than half-and-half.

1:49...I'd disagree. As a single bad habit, you'd be right, but as a sign that someone treasures her saturated fats, the outlook is dimmer. First, look at the size of a cup of coffee these days -- most mugs hold 12-14 oz. instead of the typical 8oz serving size, and the smallest Starbucks cup is 12 oz., I believe. I reckon that makes the amount of half-and-half tot up 60 calories a cup on the principle that 50% more coffee requires 50% more of whatever you put in it. Most people I know have 2 cups a day minimum, so now you're looking at 120 calories worth of the tasty fatty stuff.

If 10:30am's sister cut the sugar in half and chose milk over half-n-half and had a 2-cups-a-day habit, that's about 100 calories a day she saved. It's one of those relatively painless changes that can really add up.

I've also discovered nonfat half&half. It's not as great as the real thing but it's not as bad as skim milk!

milk is soooooooo much better for you than half and half. If you can and still like the taste, I would switch. Now!

probable alternative to half and half taste...

Once you get hooked up with Coffee its not easy to break the habit . On top of it, coffee with Half and Half still makes it worse(i.e. habit/addiction to loose). Even if some one says its bad for you etc, you cannot stop.
At home we use two percent milk with coffee froth maker(We can get in IKEA for 3$(Batteries get used faster) or Bed bath and beyond for 19$(Never used)) makes the coffee taste a lot more better.

I put about 1/4 cup of cream- not coffee cream. but 33% cream- in my xl coffee. I've only got 20lbs to lose, have coffee maybe twice a week, and use xylitol, not sugar.

9:05 1/2& 1/2 vs milk

There is non fat half & half (Land OLakes) and if you use 2TBLS it's only 2g sugar, but no cholestrol and no fats of any kind....i'ts a thought. I try and avoid it because of the sugar, but is it something I would use.

Half & Half

I say use half and half, I fill my cup about 1/3 of the way with skim milk if I'm using that, and I only use about 1-2 TBSP of half and half to get the same creaminess. It tastes better and I really think it's a better choice, calorie-wise. As far as fat content-- well hey-- sometimes you do need SOME fat to help you feel full.
Good luck deciding! :)
