Exercises for big hips
Does anyone have suggestions on exercises that slim these nasty hips? I heard someone say jump roping was great for women with big hips.

I don't know the appropriate term, but I've always liked sumo squats with lateral leg lifts (very wide stance, squat, while standing up, keep your leg straight and lift it out the the side). And really any work on the glutes should slim the hips as well.
Hope that helps :) And if it doesn't, you can always check out Fitness magazine or Shape magazine's websites. They have tons of workouts (body part specific) on there.

Jump rope is fantastic. It works your entire body and you will also feel it in your abs.

Thanks for the info. I've worked the glutes till they were so sore, i couldn't walk! doesn't slim up these dang child bearing hips! And i'm done having children!
will take any advice you can give!

Unfortunately, it's very hard or impossible to spot-train.
To get the best results, do the workout that made your glutes so sore, so that you firm up the muscle underneath. And monitor your calorie intake vs. expenditure (exercise) so that you are burning more than you consume, so you burn the fat. Your hips may be the last place your body wants to lose the fat from, so it may take awhile.
In the meantime, measure your hips every couple of weeks, and keep track - if you're burning calories and firming the muscles, you should see movement in the measurement even if it is not apparent to you by just looking in the mirror.

so i should burn 1500 calories a day in exercise and only eat 1200? i'm not following what you said about burning more than you consume. is that healthy?

yes i am for real, are you as cynical in life as you are on this thread?
i was pretty clear in stating that i didn't understand what the previous poster was suggesting, burning more than you consume, but if i am eating 1500 cal a day, i'd have to burn more than that, if i understood her correctly, and that's doesn't seem healthy to me.
get off this tread if you don't like the conversation.

I dont think he/she was trying to be cynical.
It is cold hard science, the only way to lose weight without surgery is to burn more calories than you eat. Alot of the calories you burn in a day is from doing "normal" things, like walking and even typing.
Sadly, there is no real successful spot reduction exersise. If you try to do that, you will likely just build up the muscles on your hips and make them look bulkier. Just try to reduce your overall fat and then you will see a difference all around.
Unless you're like me... I have big hips because of my genetics... there is no way they're going anywhere!

I asked if you were for real because it is common knowledge that you have to have a calorie deficit in order to lose weight. There are other factors of course, but that's pretty much it.
did you think you were supposed to burn off 1500 calories through exercise alone?

You can't really do "spot training". The best thing to do for big hips is big cardio. Running is the best but if you're not there yet physically, get on the elliptical, swim or do some biking. Your hips will get smaller.

I am one who struggles from big hips too.
Walking really helps. I guess cuz it works the butt muscles so much.
I even have an indoor walking tape and it works muscles that regular walking doesn't.
Maybe you would have trouble now but could work into it.

I do have to agree that CARDIO AND watching your calories will work! I have big hips, 3 kids and bad genetics is at fault for these suckers!
But over the last three months, I have lost almost 20pounds with JUST cardio and counting calories. I walk 2 miles a day, and county them calories, and I have noticed a HUGE I mean did I say it enough HUGE difference! Good luck!

Be nice to your hips!
I'll agree with the cardio, but I also suggest Pilates or Yoga.
You may be mad at your hips, but don't be mean to them. Gentle stretching and movement is necessary to maintain flexibility. And Pilates has helped me achieve some nice toning in the hip area. I wish you the same results!
