ideal measurements for someone who's 5'8?

I'm currently:
bust: 36 B
waist: 29
hips: 39.5
thighs: 24
calves: 15

Everyone says I'm skinny, but I don't see it. I'm a US size 10. I really want to be a 6..which according to most sites has a measurement of wasit: 26-27, hips :36-37. I'm not sure about thigh measurements. But that seems a little hard for me? I'm not sure.

Any ideas on what I should be aiming for?

At 5'8 a size 6 would be pretty thin for your height, I would say you might be able to go one size smaller but thats it. It would also depend on your build, whether your lanky or curvy. Judging from your measurements your are curvy. Lots of people would kill to have those awesome curve. I am 5'3 but totally shaped like a boy. My waist is barely smaller then my hips.

OP.

I'm definately not lanky, although I do have long legs - that's just the height. A size 6 is about 28-38? I find it hard to believe that I'll be 'thin' at that size though.it's only 2 inches off my hips and waist?

I hate this. I feel like so pressured to want to be Kate Moss skinny. But I know it isn't that attractive. Stupid high school. =\

You sound beautiful and curvy! You don't need to be Kate Moss skinny to be beautiful! Lies! Lies! It's your attitude that makes you beautiful. Your confidence. Your smile. The way you treat others. Eat quality foods. Exercise. Your body will go where it's supposed to be. In the meantime, love yourself just the way you are!

I spent my high school life hating the way I looked. Once I left high school, I finally realized I was beautiful! It's hard not to compare yourself to others. Try to find a "real life" role model that you can aspire to be like (someone of your height who is healthy and in great shape). Focus on all the things that are wonderful about you and ignore the things that aren't "perfect". Try to be the best YOU you can be and forget trying to be like everyone else!

I'm 5'6 and aiming for your measurements, because that's what I feel totally sexy as, and that's the size that I cannot keep guys away from me at...

So if you're 5'8, I'd say your measurements are perfectly sexy/attractive/fine as is.

Personally, if I was you, I'd would spend effort on getting smaller, but focus on ways to realise how skinny/pretty/attractive you really are. Find a way to not feel the pressure, instead of caving to it.

Hi OP. I'm 5'8, too, and here are my measurements:
waist 26
hips 37
bust: 34B/C

I'm size 2. You can't be size 10, or your are wearing much too baggy clothes for your real size.

And anyhow, I'm out of shape now, compared to what I was a few years ago and what I'm working towards now again. That's about an inch off waist and hips (I've become flabby, so just toning up). And everyone, who tells you you're skinny (now), how do they look themselves, that's the question. Also, please note, I'm not obsessed with weight/measurements/etc, it's just a shape I feel good in (and my bone structure isn't too huge to support it).

OP

4.27, I fel horrible at my size. I want to wear a 2 peice terribly, and I look too flabby. =\

4.51, what are your thigh measurements? And also, I'm def. a size 10. Def. df. But your measurements are what go with size 4-6 or even 2 in some stores, the 1-2 inches make a huge diff.

I know it is tough especially we women we really are about the size, But just be true to yourself I always remind myself that the clothing sizes are on the inside with labels..so really only you know weather you are 4 or 6... Just remember be healthy and perhaps add weights to your workouts..if you get more toned you will have more muscle which will consistently be burning more fat off the body even while you sleep..
Also nothing good comes easy at least for me...so if you want a change do it the true way, for a lifetime. But ask your doctor also . They are completly honest with you

10:51 talking about the labels on the inside made me think of Seinfeld...do any of you remember the one where he cut the size label out of his jeans so he wouldn't have to admit he had gone up a size? lol

I'm 5ft 8in too. I'm an apple//top heavy;
bust: 36B+
Waist: 26.5
Hip: 35.5
I'm a size 4-6, but my current size 4 is starting to get lose, and no one thinks I'm too skinny.To 4:51pm, when I was 29" waist I was a size 8-10. It's about a 15lb difference.

To OP, it took me 5month of work to get to now. And, I still have flabbs which I'm working to get off and tone up. You need muscles to look toned and tight, but aerobic to brun off the fat so the muscles can show. Definitely add weight training 3x/week. Get a personal trainer if you can effort one. Aerobic 45min-1hr 3x/week with variable intensity [train for an endurance event, if you get bored easily]. Nutrition is even more important than exercise. So, Eat, eat, eat. 1500cal/day. 5-6meals/day. Carb, protein, healthy fat with each major meal. But eat clean only and none of that processed food/soda/sugar crap. Drink lots of green tea. Sleep 8 hr/day. If you wnat it that badly, and you think it's worth this much work and your time, then I say go for it. However, focuse on getting fit, stronger, faster, not the scale number, and trust the tap measure. Good luck!!!!

oh, BTW, your breast will get smaller too. Mine when from a C to a B+.... so, you really have to think it is going to worthy the trouble. I did it to get fit and healthy, and kick some asses on my runs. I would be happy at size 6-8 and ripped, but my body won't look that way untile I'm a 2. Damn it...If the only reason for you is to fit into a highschool crowd, I would say, don't bother, your figure is good enough that high school will be over soon and there will be plenty of boys once you hit the college. AND, there will ALWAYS people critizing your figure no matter what size you are [too tall, too thin, too fat...whatever], don't do it for a "fit in". It's not worthy it.

OP

Well, the problem is that at this weight/size, I'm pretty tone. Not too much flab, since I'm a runner/swimmer. Definately SOME flab, but not much. My abs are pretty flat and most of my problem is really my butt and thighs and hips. ALL the flab goes there =[ Honeslty, I'd be sooo glad for 38 inch hips, 28 inch waist, and corrospondingly thick but not flabby thighs. I have no idea what size that'd be.

=\ My bra already went from a C to a full B when I lost the first 15. I'm preparing for a loose B, A. But everyone in my family gets larger breasts after 20, so maybe that'll change?

Hmph. Life.

SIZE 2... WTF!

I am 23 yrs, 5'8, 185lbs, 38DD, 33inch waist, 43 inch hips and Im beautiful. I am in the united states airfoce and my run time is better then most the females that i work with. Im in great shape and i have a flat tummy that people half my size would die for. Girls its all about your attitude and what really makes you feel special! I used to wanna be like all my friends in high school who wore all the cool hip clothes, that never seemed to fit me, from the cool hip stores in the mall. Then i realized i was curvy and bustful and as long as i stayed toned i was beautiful. A size 2 to anything is nothing if your not in shape and healthy!

Agree w/ PP. It is all abody body fat. I will take a toned, flat stomach size 6/8 over a flappy size 2 any day. Not to mention that everyone's bone structure is definite. You need a extremly small fram to fit into a size 2 for 5'8". Just concentrate on slash the body fat, when you hit 15% body, you will look hot in a bikini in just about any size.

That depends on your bone structure and type of build. I used to be 5'8" and an hourglass shape (but now I'm 5'7" and way overweight). I have medium bone structure. At my very best (when I was 5'8" and height/weight proportionate) I weighed 155, and my measurements were 38-30-38.

But I also had a friend who was 5'8" with a small bone structure, weighed 150 and was a pear shape. Her measurements were 36-32-40.

So there's probably no right answer for you here. It depends on *you*.

I'm 5'8" also. I weigh 155 and measure like so:
bust:36C
waist:31
hips:40
I've never measured my thighs...
I am not trying to lose any weight, just trolling around for fun new exercises, and always looking to stay fit. I'm a size 8 or 10 depending on the brand.

You sound perfect to me! Make sure to not compare your body to others, even those of the same height. There is such a variety of shapes and sizes that can all be healthy and fit and perfect. Just focus on challenging yourself to new fitness levels, and eating healthfully. It should be about how YOU look and feel as compared to before. Not as compared to someone else. :)

hey everyone! So I'm the original OP of this post and I have to say, I was surprised when it popped back up XD (it's a little old)

I have changed my goals and have noticed a difference. My goal is to run a marathon and try to stick to a 'zone diet' type of eating habits (balancing carbs, protein, etc). Not losing weight.

I look and feel great and haven't measured myself really in a while! It works!

I'm 5'8'' and wear a size ten, and have a 31 waist. I could use to tone up for sure, but honestly my body is still pretty damn good.

To the original poster- you sound beautiful. Focus on getting healthy & having muscle tone. High School can set unrealistic goals for what is 'pretty'. Honestly, once I got to college and now that I am in 'the real world' I realized just how much men and women both admire a woman who is fit and has curves. This may sound creepy but you may even notice that older men never hit on twiggy looking HS girls, but rather the curvier more developed ones. I'm not encouraging this, but just pointing out that HS boys that only go for the sticks are most likely doing so because they are young too and think thats what they are supposed to like, as opposed to actually liking it.

That's great! Sound like your focus is more on health now and less set on being a certain size. By the way, I'm 5'9'' and you're my goal size.

lol I'm the OP, omg 11.09 - it's so true! I was always wondering why I get hit on more by old creepers than guys my age - but what you said makes sense. I even have always thought that after a certain age, it's much sexier to be ~a size 10 than to be ~ a size 4. Especially after being a mother, etc.

5' 8" & feeling your pain :)

I am also 5' 8" I workout 5-6 times a week I eat healthy (90% of the time :) and tend to gain muscle fairly easy which is somewhat bulky. Honestly I agree body structure is everything!! My measurements are 36C bust, 28.5 waist, and 39 hips. We are practically the same!! I wear between an 8-9...and 90% of the people I tell that to do not believe me. I honestly thought until reading this that I was much larger than I should be I fight and fight to lose weight but sometimes there is no fighting your body type and your build. Like I said my muscles they get bulky, my butt & thighs look larger but they are quite muscular and even my midsection bulks muscle. Everyone is built differently I am beginning at the age of 25 to finally just be okay with me, my body and all its flaws!

Sounds like meeee....

Sounds like I am shape exactly like you (curvy/ slightly athletic build), same height- everything and was like a 7/8 9/10 depending on the cuts and designers of my clothes. I went to a size 6 by doing pilates. Nothing much seemed like it changed except my mid-section...and my thighs no longer touched (not by much though) That's probably the only place to loose is stomach right? :) Mee too.

Well, tall people can get away with being larger and heavier than shorter people. I'm 5'3". Currently at 38-26-38, after a good month of watching myself and my thigh measurement is at 22.5. I fit a 4 or 6 modern (Even the occasional 2), and usually, I squeeze into the butt/thigh area but the waist is actually a smidge loose. I choose to wear my clothes this way because I can't afford tailoring and it's better than having a nice fitting fanny but a waist so loose it falls off. If I were to proportionately grow to 5'8", My measurements would be 41-28-41, with my thighs being 24, which isn't far off on your waist and thigh measurements.

I get skinny comments quite often and I think you sound pretty thin. I don't think you really need to lose any weight but if you're self conscious, I'd probably only go 5lbs or an inch off the waist at a time and just stop looking at the number on the tag.

I used to be super self conscious of my clothing size, especially since I'm asian and it's like size 0 or 00 was the "standard" for most of my family, the one exception being the grandma that I got my hourglass genes from and she was even called a fattie as a kid. Comparitively, I was the "fat kid" at size 2-4 back in high school. Then, my boyfriend got tired of my whining and got all my clothes and wrote 0s in sharpie marker on the tags and told me I'm beautiful the way I am. He's a sweetie.

5'10.5" here!

hey everyone!! i love this thread. I am 5'10.5" and my measurements are 36-29.5-39.5...... i am happy with the way i look, i am proportioned and my clothes fit well, i wear a 10-12 and no one beleives it either! I think confidence in yourself makes you look 100X more beautiful then you already are.... i am constantly trying to tone up but i know that if i go down to a 6 my body probably couldnt sustain that size for very long!! go curvy girls :)

5'8 too :)

Kinda late on the comment, but i hope it helps...
my measurements were just the same as yours and i was sitting at about 145-147lb. I wanted to get smaller so began to work out, cut out meat from my diet, and watched my portions. I lost the weight, im sitting at 133lb, 34-26-36.5 last time i checked. People were telling me I didn't need to lose weight, but honestly, it didn't matter what they thought. It was all about how i felt and as long as your healthy that's all that matters :)

That sounds about right to me. I'm 5'7 and a size 8/29....I'm usually between 140-145 lbs, right now about 155- actually probably not even going to bother losing it...most of it went to my hips/belly and I like being a little bit curvier. My belly's not completely flat anymore, but it doesn't really bother me. I'd say if you're happy, go with it!

I am someone with pretty much the exact measurements you were after. That is I am:

5'8"

bust: 36 DD
waist: 27
hips: 36

I weight on average 133lbs. If I lived in the US I would be a size 6.

People tell me I am skinny all the time, and my BMI is closer to underweight than overweight. I am someone who has an extremely healthy diet and has relatively good fitness.

But I digress. If you lose weight you will almost certainly lose your bust. When I weighed less than I do now, a.k.a. bust: 33-34ish, waist: 25-26ish, hips: 35-36ish, I was a D cup and at my lowest weight a C cup. In terms of bra width I have always been a 32/AUS 10. Furthermore, you may note that the shape of my body actually improved when I gained a bit of weight (I went from bottom heavy to hourglass).

What I'm trying to say is that the fact that the size of my hips and my bra width remained fairly constant when I was gaining weight suggested that I was underweight to begin with, and my natural weight and shape was hourglass. I have noticed that at times when I get a bit heavier before losing it again (like holiday seasons and such) all parts of me increase evenly in size. This suggests to me that the size I am now is my correct size, as this even weight gain is likely a layer of fat spread through the body.

Of course I may have no idea what I'm talking about, but it might be helpful to you if you're trying to figure out your natural shape and size. It's possible that the shape and size you are now *is* ideal for you. If you try losing weight and find it only seems to come off your boobs while other parts remain constant, that suggests that you don't need to lose weight (if there is no weight to lose off the hips and waist then the weight loss must come off the boobs as they would be the last place to store excess fat).

If the weight comes evenly off all parts of you (boobs, thighs, waist, etc) then that suggests that you can afford to lose some weight without becoming underweight. Often weight first comes off the boobs anyway, but it should come off the other parts too.

Anyway, there is no way for anybody else to determine what you should be aiming for except you as everybody has a different body shape. I hope my advice can help you figure out yours (basically, lose weight if it's coming off all parts of your body, but stop if no more weight is coming off your waist and hips - they reach a point where there's no excess fat to lose).

Also, keep in mind that a bit of extra fat on your body can actually be good for your health, and men do find curves attractive (if that is why you wish to lose weight). Personally I like to attempt to keep no excess fat on my body if I can, but that's because I've started physical training to build muscular strength.

Sorry for the excess wordiness of the post, I tend to go in circles a bit.
