Challenge 06: Meet Your Mark (Jan)
This is one you play against yourself, so there can (will be) multiple winners.
While it's good to avoid being "below the Yellow Line" as one of the worst losers of the week (or worst gainers, unfortunately), being the Biggest Loser is not, and shouldn't be, everybody's aim. Statistics show that if you lose a significant amount of weight at a faster pace than 1-2 pounds per week, you are more likely to regain that weight. Considering that the vast majority of those who attempt some sort of weight loss gain their weight back to begin with, this is not a wise statistic to try to fight to be a statistical outlier. Moreover, seeing others become the Biggest Loser multiple times while you are never lauded for your progress could lead to negative feelings of lack of confidence that could worsen your chances of succeeding with your plan.
So this challenge is for people to set short-term goals: weekly, monthly, and quarterly (13 weeks, or roughly 3 months or 90 days) for themselves.
My "New Year" starts on Wednesday ( to end 52 weeks later on Jan 1, 2013), so I cannot post specific target weights yet, but my rough goals will be as follows:
for Week of Jan 8 - Jan 14: loss of >0.8 pound
for Week of Feb 5 - Feb 11: loss of >4.0 pounds
for Week of Apr 1 - Apr 7: loss of >12.0 pounds
(This is because to reach my "ideal" weight, I need only lose 48 pounds by start of next year.)
Note: once you have set an actual goal weight for any one of these three target dates, you cannot reset them for the purposes of this challenge (Though you can of course do so for yourself, and probably should -- if, say, I gain 1 pound instead of losing 5 in January, I should not then try to lose 16 pounds in the two months that remain, but if I do not, I will not "win" this challenge for this first quarter of the year.)
I will try to update this thread each week, and will declare "winners" in the thread and in the main comments, for the past week, month, and quarter as applicable.

Transformation Road - Book (Sean Anderson blog)
Great blog post on weight loss and mainstream media from a man who was once 500 pounds and lost weight the old fashion way. His new book is available now (I'm ordering this!) Just wanted to share the inspiration that is Sean Anderson.

I am confused about what is available here. I thought there were local support groups. I don't see anything. Maybe there just are enough people local to me on here. I will give it some time as I learn how to get around the site.

diarrhea after sushi (gross, I know) but I have to ask
Why do I get diarrhea every time after I eat sushi? It's not just once and I don't think it's an actual bacteria. It's every time I eat it and I like sushi a lot. I don't want to give it up. Does anyone else have this problem?

Challenge 2: Habit, Habit, Habit (Jan)
The holiday challenge is officially over, and with the new year here, it's time to revive this old challenge.
This one is to either create new good habits or rid yourself of old bad habits.
Studies show that it takes an average of 21 days for one to establish a new habit (or break an old one), but we're going to go for a whole month at a time.
Studies also show that you need to limit the number of habits you work upon at once, and even though we're probably all working on several with regard to eating and exercise, let's just keep it to 1-3 TOP PRIORITY habits.
3 used to be the reference of the Greeks to "a lot," so I like that number, and so this thread has the title it does from that and the fact that when I was a kid, I tried to say "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" as the very first thing I uttered the morning I woke up on the first of every month, which was supposed to give you good luck.

Sugar doesn't have to be inevitable
Everyday we are surrounded by sugary foods that beckon us. They look so enticing and it is hard to resist the temptation. The trouble is, that the more we have, the more we want.
It's a New Year. If you know deep down that you are better off without sugar, but you have difficulty in avoiding it, then this group is for you.

Effective & Fun Without Quackery
Humour good; baloney bad. More specifically ... This is a group of happy skeptics, atheists, agnostics, educated, scientific method loving persons who have fabulous senses of humour but who haven't time for quackery and will not preach cleanses, prayer, homeopathy, organics, chakras, food "sensitivities" (with all respect to those who have real allergies), blood type diets, or other silliness.

(from Week One: Laying the Groundwork)
