scab on mole

Last week, I noticed I had a scab on a new mole (the mole is very very small and light brown) that I just recently saw developed a few months ago. I tried picking it off, but the scab wouldn't come off. Well, I thought maybe I was just being paranoid-- perhaps that's how the mole has been all along or it's just changed it a bit since it's still new. Today, I looked at it and I was able to pick off the scab. The mole underneath still is the same. I searched online for more information, and scabbing could be a symptom of melanoma, however, I am still unclear. I also read that the scabbing most likely could be due to irritation to the skin, but I don't even remember ever having something irritate my mole.

Luckily, I get my annual check-ups towards the end of summer before I start the fall term (I will be in my last year of college), so I can consult with my physician. But I just want to know others' opinions or stories if they can relate to ease my anxiety.

Thanks!

Eh, that happens to me from time to time. Chances are you either scratched it or rubbed it against something without even realizing it, and it irritated the surface.

My favorite is when I get a pimple on top of a mole. Ugly and weird.

That's so true. Yeah, ugh I've gotten the pimple thing a few times in my life. It's so weird. I really hope I just accidently irritated it. I guess if it scabs over again in the future it could be something. Thanks for your response!

If it heals and there is no more scab-then it is probably nothing to worry about (you probably did scratch yourself). If it doesn't heal normally, here's some more info for you to keep in mind. If it keeps scabbing over, bleeds, gives off pus or anything else strange please get it checked out soon. What color is it? Also, not trying to freak you girls out but it isn't really common to get an actual pimple on a mole.

Basal Cell Carcinoma is one of the more common skin cancers and it is usually pink/red and can seem like a scab or pimple-but it is also nothing to worry about at all if one gets it removed quickly.

Melanoma's are usually very dark in color, have irregular edges, or are large and uneven. Melanoma can advance rather quickly so it is important to have a doctor look at anything suspicious. Often people get suspicious moles removed and the end up being nothing. But it's better to be safe than sorry!

9:59, thanks for the response. Yeah, right now, the mole looks perfectly normal (the color is a normal light brown since you asked) and there is not like a "scar" that you would get when you pick off a scab. It's so weird. The mole looks fine. I just really hope it doesn't scab again or else I'll be worried!

Yeah my dad's had basal carcinoma twice along with a pre-cancerous lesions that his derm removed. That's why the last few years I've been very cautious about my skin, wearing sunscreen regularly and seeing the derm. I've been to the derm many times over the last few years, so I don't want to go back bother them with another one of my "concerns".

Well, recently, I had a pimple inside a mole. I noticed a white spot and eventually it got bigger and pushed out of the mole and I just used a tweezer to remove it. The other time was when I had a pimple right near a mole.

Personally I would be concerned since it is a new mole and now there is this scab. Moles are tricky especially when they pop up overnight. How is the mole shaped? Is it smooth with straight edges? If so it is probably nothing to worry about BUT if it has an odd shape and the edges are sketchy and not distinct then I would not wait for the end of the summer. Even though a yearly is just that you should talk to you doctor now about it.

1052, well the mole is perfectly normal and the scab is gone. I am well informed of the symptoms of melanoma and other skin cancers, but this one is tricky since a scab appeared and now it's gone and it looks perfectly normal...but I'm just wondering what's up with this. Yeah, I was planning on scheduling an appointment during the fall, but I guess I'll set an appointment now. However, it's so hard to get doctor's appointments. I'm at Kaiser and often the next available appointment is in 5 weeks. It really sucks. I was just at the derm last month for a 6 month check up for this irregular mole on my scalp, which is turns out to be nothing, but I just wish this mole I'm concerned about right now showed up earlier!

my baby sister just had that happen to her. a new mole appeared in June that was crusty. I made her go to the doctor, who then got her into see a dermatologist in July. neither thought it would be anything, but the derm. took it off just to be sure. next day, sis got a call that the biopsy was positive for cancer. thank god she had it checked right away - skin cancer it the easiest to sure if and ONLY IF it is caught early. please have it checked out asap, OP. sis has to have the lymph glands checked after the biopsy heals in Aug. we're keeping our fingers crossed!

12:49, yeah I'm definitely going to have this checked out. Your sister's situation seems different from mine because this new mole has always been normal, but last week I noticed it had a scab and today I was able to flake it off and the mole looks completely the same before the scab. But I'm def going to have it checked out. Thanks! How old is your sister by the way? I hope everything goes well with your sister!!

Hmm... sounds like something I had. I had a mole go from light brown to black before, and scab over. It ctayed that way for a few weeks, until i decided to pick it off with tweezers. Well, I did. Now, not mole, no nothin, been that way for a year. I think I cured myself of cancer.

OP here
11:24, you cured yourself of cancer? Because, according to what I know, skin cancer is underneath the external layer of the skin so that's why doctors have to dig in deep into the skin to make sure it's taken out.

my favorite web site for medical info is webmd.com. here's an overview of melanoma that is pretty thorough.

Hey thanks for the link. That's also a favorite medical website of mine. I have a pretty good overview of skin cancer, especially since my dad has had it a few times and I know I have several risk factors, but I'm just wondering why that scabbish looking thing was growing on my mole. The mole looks perfectly normal now that the scab came off. I just hope it doesn't grow back again and I'll ask my physician about it. Thanks everyone.

Did you learn anything after your checkup? I'm wondering because of a mole I have near my waistline. It formed a scab on it over two months ago and has not healed since. I'll be checking the my doctor soon, but I am curious about your outcome.
Take care!

Hey. I was surprised when this thread appeared again. Well I had my physical in August and my doctor said it was nothing...just some sort of skin growth on the mole...forgot what she said. It hasn't formed a scab since and nothing has changed. Good luck to you!

GO TO THE DERMATOLOGIST RIGHT AWAY!!!

I had a suspicious mole. My gyne and general practitioner both said it was nothing. Well, it was something. If your mole is cancer, it only has to be the tickness of a dime to get into your blood stream. And then you're terminal. Why take a chance?

Wow I'm the original OP of this thread. I wrote this a year ago....crazy. For me, it turned out to be nothing (the scab on the mole, which eventually came off and a normal looking mole was underneath). I spoke to my derm and regular doctor and they said it was nothing. I had another scab like substance on a mole several months ago and showed it to the derm when I was there for something else and it was nothing....he just told me something about how it happened since it's part of the skin (I can't explain it). Then back in June, another thick scab like substance appeared on another mole of mine...it freaked me out but eventually I pulled it off and it healed..and now it's normal again. BUT...I would still have your doctor check it out just in case.

I have a mole on my right side of that i've had for years. This mole that I have is in the same place that my bra line is. Want to know if my bra (which is irratating my mole) can casue some damage to this mole. It so irreated to the point that is very red and starting to scab? Is this noremal?

Yeah it's probably very possible, but maybe you should see a doctor if you're unsure/nervous. I'm actually the OP of this thread and quite surprised it's come back up again lol. Actually, last summer, my mole on my chest got this scab for some reason. One thing is that I was wearing this new mailman bag and thinking the strap was causing the scar since I had been wearing shirts exposing my upper chest area (no, not low cut shirts haha). I actually picked off the scab and it bled. I kinda freaked out, but it healed and turned back to normal and that was that. But yeah, see a doctor...could be your bra but just to be sure. Good luck.

it can't ever hurt to go see your doctor. You should always go, and if you're scared because of cost or no health insurance, doctors will work with you.
