Burning Fat vs Burning Sugar

I just read the article about training your body to burn fat vs. sugar, and I listened to the interview with JJ Virgin ("Mythbusters") but I still have questions.

I am a triathlete and I can't really do "low-intensity" fat burning exercises; the sport is all about speed. I can and do incorporate intervals but I am curious if there is more to training the body to burn fat first.

For instance, if someone doesn't consume lots of sugars (mostly complex carbs) in the first place, wouldn't their body be forced to turn to the fat stores? And if your post workout refuel is not sugar heavy wouldn't that also leave the body no choice but to burn up fat?

I'm just curious about how to make sure I am making the most of my workouts, from a training and fitness/weight loss aspect. If I am doing a 30 mile bike ride and i throw in some sprint intervals is that enough? If my sugar stores are relatively low to begin with how do I make sure my body switches over to fat burning once all the sugars are used up?
