I Love Food
No, really. I like the different tastes in food, sweet or sour, savory or spicy. I enjoy the textures, the smoothness, chewiness and crunchiness. I am a gourmand- not a gourmet. It might be as simple a poor-folk mac&cheese with ham in it, or as complex as a souffle, but I love many kinds of food, entirely on their own merits as food. I've taught myself to make many dishes- some very complex. When asked, "Do you like cooking?" I always have to confuse them. "No," I say. "I like eating."
One might think that the answer is simple. That I should just cultivate a taste for healthy foods- which I've done, quite successfully. Unfortunately, loving grilled herbed vegetables does not make me love blackened chicken and shrimp alfredo less.
One might also say it is a matter of discipline. That I should just shut the unhealthy dishes from my diet. However, being so in love with food, I'm not entirely sure I wouldn't rather only live 20 more years, than have 40 without cheesecake. I think that's where I sabotage myself- that belief that being healthy means cutting all that is unhealthy from my diet- or at least, that seems to be what diet programs and articles are telling me. I feel I'm being told the equivalent of: "No, you don't have to give up sex entirely. Just cut it down to once every month or two."
Anyone else love food but successfully make a lifestyle change? Have any tips or horror stories?
