New Calorie Wiki Contest....
Between now and Oct 15th, the user who adds the most (accurate) entries to the Calorie Wiki wins the same cool IPOD that Sluttony just won. Ideally the entries will be creative, but want to make sure all your favorite foods are in there.

Do the entires we've added so far count?
And will you be automatically counting the entries or is there going to be some form of community voting or other subjective method for selection?

Will you be discqualifying entries that appear to have used web crawling scripts? If not, I don't see how those of us legitimately trying to put interesting and useful entries in the database could fairly compete with an automated process.

I'm referring to any scripts. It doesn't matter who uses them. If used they just put many people at a disadvantage for the contest.

Whoever you are, posting at 8:32am, make sure you have evidence before you make an accusation like the one you just did. (Then again, given the political climate that surrounds you, maybe you just don't know any better.) I did NOT use any kind of automated script (don't know how to do that anyway - maybe you're the one we need to worry about?). It was just free manual labour on my part, hard goddamn work for free, inputting products that I personally am likely to eat in the future or have eaten in the past (what can I say, I'm whimsical when it comes to ice cream).
As for "interesting and useful entries", you didn't explicitly refer to my entries, oh-fascinating-and-highly-legitimate 8:17am/8:33am poster, so I'd love to know whose entries you were implicating? But I will happily defend my entries. Regarding "useful": I did PAINSTAKINGLY enter the ENTIRE breakdown of nutrition info AND the ingredients for every product I put in. That's a lot more information than a lot of other entries. Some people don't put anything other than calories, as far as nutritional info goes. Regarding "interesting": for products I especially love I added comments and/or further description. But anyway "Interesting" is subjective, and was not a criteria for the contest.
And the fact that it's a wiki means I can go back and add elaborate descriptions later as I see fit.
I'm only human, as are several other people who have inputted very large amounts of entries into the wiki. So, rest assured, provided you're also human, you are at no disadvantage for the contest...

p'frau- I am the 8:32 am poster and that was a joke! There obviously is no script and I cannot imagine how you would do it. If anything, the person who asked about the script should take offense to my comment.

I'm the poster about the script.
Blozzom
I made no accusations - it was just a thought I had last evening when powerfrau and I spent many hours adding to the calorie wiki. It would be ashame that we spend our hard time inputting and then someone else could come along with a script, hit enter, and let it run for the weekend and win the ipod. I just want to make sure that I am not wasting my precious time inputting things only to have someone come along and run a script and win.
There are scripts out there or that people can write to do the inputting for you. I've done it for my job. I just think it would be rotten for someone with a script to win.

someone with a script is not going to win. It is pretty clear who is doing what. And if all of a sudden there are 1000 entries in 10 minutes or something like that, we will all know.

ooooops - hey Blozzom, gosh, i didn't realise it was you! i guess i just saw my name in the next post and assumed i was implicated, as you didn't then deny that you were referring to me. no hard feelings. Everyone check out Blozzom's cool Seattle Sutton's listings (meal21 tag) on the wiki!!! Their descriptions are tantalizingly seductive :)
Presumably, if it's possible to run a script to update the wiki, then it's certainly easy to space the times of the entries so that they don't arouse suspicion.
but, blozzom, only someone in the food or marketing industry (erm, i don't mean you!) could really do that, because they would need to have already compiled some kind of database of foods, no??? i s'pose they could always make up numbers (or products for that matter...hmmm, Bertie Bott's jelly beans anyone?).
i'm also still curious to know what exactly happens if we update someone else's entry? the wiki concept and individualism are at inherently odds...

If you update someone else's entry it is saved as a new version. Each version is saved. If a new entry does not add, or subtracts in someway, it can be rolled back with the click of a button. So if you see something, email us.

i am having fun as well as learning. The difference between a whole foods product and a Keebler product is like night and day. Whole foods cookies have mujch less junk in them than the Keebler ones. They even taste better.

Will you be discqualifying entries that appear to have used web crawling scripts? If not, I don't see how those of us legitimately trying to put interesting and useful entries in the database could fairly compete with an automated process.

I've been frustrated with BFL because all of the recipes I've found have no nutritional information. I finally found a woman that posted some PDF files with BFL-friendly recipes that included the nutritional information.
It's gonna be a breeze to eat BFL-friendly once these are in the wiki. The recipes are designed to choose 6 of them per day and you are at 1400 calories a day and the BFL ratios for 40-40-20.
Blozzom :-)
