Miles in a week
How many miles a day, do you think I need to walk to lose weight? I'm walking at a fast pace for 1 hour, 5-6 days a week.

There's no easy answer to that question. It depends on how many calories you consume, how much you weigh, how fast you walk, etc.

I agree with 5:26, that your question has no easy answers and many variables. That said, years ago, I copied this quote from National Weight Control Registry research, led by Dr. Rena Wing of the University of Pittsburgh. They studied people who had been successful losing weight and said, "Subjects burned a hefty 2,800 calories a week through exercise, the equivalent of about twenty-eight miles of walking. About 80 percent burned approximately 1,000 of those calories by walking, making up the rest with cross-training activities that escalated in intensity as they continued to lose weight."

Your body gets used to the same activity-you need to continue to challenge yourself. Mix it up a bit-walk extralong one day, do intervals (alternate brisk with bouts of power walking) on a couple others, throw in an incline route a day or two. If your heart rate isn't getting up there, you aren't doing much towards weight loss.

I think you might find after you start walking that you want to walk further, and maybe even start jogging. If you are walking quickly for an hour, do you think you're doing 3.5-4 miles? That is great. Walking up hills and on different terrain will help you to feel the burn. Now that it is getting colder, your body will burn more calories trying to keep itself warm. I hope you check back in the near future to let us know your progress!
