Oprah and Dr. Oz

I watched a TiVo'd episode of Oprah last night with Dr. Oz talking about heart disease, the number one killer of women. He showed real organs from the body, healthy ones and "sick" ones and what they looked like. The bad ones were really disgusting. Oprah had a spiral CT slice scan done and her heart was perfect. Others had not so good news and there's was a heart-attack waiting to happen. I told my hubby that I wish that I could somehow keep the feeling I was having in that moment. It was pure out resolve to really once and for all eat only healthy food and get plenty of exercise (he said you really needed to break a sweat to do your heart good) but for some reason I know in a weeks time or less I'll be back to my old ways. Sugar and empty calories. I wrote in a group yesterday that we wouldn't put sugar in our gas tanks because it would do no good, probably ruin it, and our body needs fuel to perform. Our bodies are exactly the same.

That show was definitely an eye opener. It really disgusted me to think of what my heart might look like among other things. I smoked from 13 to 29, and then something amazing happened. I will share it cause I like to think of it as a vision from god. I was sitting in bed at 3am in the morning smoking and reading a book and suddenly out of no where everything around me went white and static like and I could see my lungs spotted with black goopey stuff that seemed to bubble and swell and I could see it growing as well as hear it. It completely scared me. After that I put my smoke out and that was it. I never picked up another one or even had a craving for one. To this day I can see that vision clear as day. That was 7 years ago, way before that commercial came out of the kid smaoking in the bathroom, if anyone ever saw that you know what i'm talking about. Its like they stole my vision and used it.
My point is maybe you can use a reminder to keep that feeling with you. Google for infected hearts and print out some pictures, tape them to places that you find yourself going to, you'll see them and remember that feeling and hopefully make better choices.
Just a thought...

I saw that episode too and had the same thoughts about needing to eat better for not only my weight but for my health. I think we sometimes get so hung up on looks and weight that we forget about our organs and how they need us to function properly.

Does anyone wonder?

Did anyone not wonder how Oprah's heart could be so healthy after she lived many years of her life eating poorly and being overweight? A lot of heart health must be hereditary. I can't imagine that suddenly eating right and exercising for five or so years could totally revamp your heart after years of abuse.

Actually, to the last poster, it doesn't take long to see a difference inside of your body. I am the poster above who had the "vision from god" I was so freaked out by my vision that years after not smoking and exercising on a daily basis and losing 50 pounds I ask my doc if we could check my lungs to see if they were ok. You can do this, my lungs were clear and pink and she said they looked fine and to stop worrying about it, that was only 5 years after. So a little exercise and healthier eating habits can definitly make a difference. Ask your doc about this next time.

On one of Oprah's previous shows with Dr. Oz he said that if you change your eating/exercise habits and keep it up for three years, your body will be as if you've always had those habits. So it just proves that the body adjusts to what we're putting in it. I have changed my eating/exercise habits for the past 6 months and believe me, my body is thanking me for it!

So Proud of You

This is to the poster with the vision and the now pink healthy lungs! I'm so proud of you. And I'm so much further encouraged now by the fact that we can get second chances with our health. When we have good health we take it for granted but when it's gone we so wish we could go back and make changes.

It's great to know that you can make yourself so healthy again! Oprah is a great example - she was definitely way overweight several times, and now looks great, and it's not just on the outside, it's on the inside too! We can all do this!!
