Nutrition 101: Eating for Weight Loss, Energy and Optimal Health

Common diet approaches invariably involve calorie and portion control. While it is important to understand portion sizes and the calories in them, it is equally important to get optimal nutrition. What is best for someone is a truly personal and individual thing, but one should proceed with the assumption that they are not getting nearly the nutrients they need. You should also proceed with the assumption that changing and mixing up the sources of nutrients will yield tremendous benefits. Whether your goal is weight loss, energy or better health, you probably can use less of certain foods (dairy, animal protein, processed foods) and more of others (vegetables, greens, beans, fruit.)

Nutrition and Calories in Vegetables and Greens
The average American gets roughly 7% of their daily calories from veggies. This is among the lowest level in the world. Coversely, Americans suffer some of the highest obesity, cancer and heart disease in the world. If you are looking to lose weight and reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, your daily caloric intake from vegetables should be as high as humanely possible. You should try a wide variety of veggies and place special focus on greens. Remember when Popeye would eat a can of Spinach and his muscles would pop out? Spinach contains more protein and calories per 100 ounce serving than beef! (Note: The reference linked to above is not an endorsement of a vegetarian diet, but the link does present strong evidence suggesting a link between disease and high levels of animal protein. Use the information to draw your own conclusions.)
