Will Coffee Help You Lose Weight?
Coffee is an extremely controversial issue when it comes to health and weight loss. The #1 thing that we have observed is not that coffee is good or bad (there is interesting research on both sides of this question).
Rather, we would observe that a) people usually drink coffee with some sort of sugar, fat or added chemical substance. And b) that coffee is a stimulant that helps put people into a sugar burning mode rather than a fat burning mode.
When you are in sugar burning mode, you are in "fight or flight" mode, where you are mostly burning your sugar stores.
Green Tea has the opposite effect. It gently energizes you, and puts you in a mode where you are more likely to burn fat as energy.
Many of you have asked us why we have you count coffee in the PEERtrainer Cheat System but green tea is unlimited. This is the reason we made that distinction.
What Are The Health Benefits Of Coffee?
That said, there are some proven health benefits to coffee. For example, there is a wide body of research which shows that as coffee consumption increases, the incidence of chronic liver disease decreases.
Additionally, coffee is very high in certain antioxidants. Research has established that coffee is rich in polyphenols.
Now, these benefits would be ideal for people who have a diet very high in alcohol and low in nutrients. If you keep your alcohol consumption to a dull roar, and you eat a diet high in green vegetables and a variety of fruits and berries, you'll be getting plenty of anti-oxidants.
We would further observe that the "behavior" surrounding coffee are fairly well established. Given that we are generally "revved up" as people, it would make sense to work on the other side of that equation.
Again, that is why we have limited coffee in the PEERtrainer Cheat System. We are even thinking about adding certain herbal teas to the "incentive bucket" of that system.

Thx for this, PTfolks. I'm really on the fence about coffee in my diet: should it stay or should it go?! I'm doing the Cheat System -- it occurs to me that I might try one week WITH coffee and one week with only green tea and yerba mate, and maybe alternate weeks, and see if I can quantify any differences in terms of weight loss. Obviously, I can't control all the other variables, but if that's all I'm tweaking in a four-week period, it might be useful. I'll be sure to report if I do!

Tandy- that is great feedback. Please keep us posted on your results. Glad to hear that the Cheat System is working for you so far. We would note that it is designed to be flexible. People need to find what works for them. But we hope our reasoning here makes sense.

I love coffee, vanilla soy with no extra sugar added. I don't have problems with drinking coffee but my husband gets a racey heart.
