Fast Abs

The bicycle maneuver is a famously efficient abdominal exercise--pumping your legs while rotating your torso works the obliques and your entire six-pack. This Swiss-ball variation from Scott Rankin, C.S.C.S., is even more challenging.

Lie on your back on a Swiss ball, with your knees bent at 90 degrees, your feet flat, and your hands behind your ears. Keeping your right foot planted, lift your left foot off the floor and bring it toward you as you curl your torso up and to the left so your right elbow meets your left knee. Do 12 repetitions. Then plant your left foot on the floor and curl toward your right knee for another 12 reps.

awesome

you know, since reading the community section on this site, i've found that men's health is a really good source for good workout tips.

i bought the mag the other day to make sure, and it's true! there are all sort of healthy tips. why aren't there any good mags like this for girls? allure and self give you tips, but nothing like men's health.

I know! I love men's health and steal it before my boyfriend even has a chance to see it. And it's funny. I feel like they are talking to me. I would LOVE a men's health style mag for us.

i think shape's ok, but not great. it's still too flluffy somehow. men's health just gets to the bottom line faster.

Ten years ago Shape was GREAT! Used to have stuff like "my favorite workout," pages and pages of exercises, and some real reporting. Now it's all about which lipstick to wear and puff paragraphs.

I like shape's website. It puts all their workouts from the magazine out there online. Good place to go if you hit a plateau and want to change things up a bit.

I wonder if Men's Health has a decent website?

Fitness is alive and well!

I find it to be very good, useful and motivational.

However I have never read Men's Health, so cannot compare. I find Shape to be more than a little 'fluffy' as a previous poster put it.

Hi Everyone,
I love this new magazine called LOOKING GOOD. They have alot of great food tips and workout tips. Also, all the people in the magazine are REAL people and not a bunch of models that look perfect. Trust me, its great. Check it out for yourself and let me know what you all think. Best part, it's only $1.99. I love my magazine's and thats a great price.

Looks like a great exercise, I will have to try it! ;-)

ONe of my friends used to stand on his balance ball (make sure there is nothing around you to injure yourself on if you fall.) I understand that it helps you to use muscles all over and to really strengthen your core... :-)

I've seen people standing on the balance balls too. First you have to work up to just kneeling on the ball. It is really tough and works alot of muslces ( butt, abs, etc). But, definately be very carefull about your surroundings, it's easy to fall.

Fitness Magazine

I love fitness magazine!!! They have lots of health tips for women and great exercises for every part of the body. They even have workouts you can try on different machines (treadmill, bike, elliptical, jump rope, etc.). They even have tips on gear and gadgets to use. When I was pregnant the articles on pregnancy fitness in each issue really helped. Fitness Magazine is great for any woman.

Women's Health

They do now have a Women's Health magazine and I only have read the Jan/Feb issue but it seems like a really good resource.

I read the Jan/Feb issue of Women's Health, and was shocked by how bad some of the reporting is. Just off the top of my head, in the article on acupuncture, written by someone who is supposedly a professor of science journalism, the author calls Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences a "medical journal." PNAS is not only NOT a medical journal (although it carries some papers of medical interest), it is not exactly conventionally peer-reviewed.

The other thing that floored me in that article was that she dismissively referred to large study population size as something necessary "for Western medicine." It's more like something necessary for any SCIENTIFIC study, you know, like when you want a sample large enough to give you a statistically significant result instead of anecdotal results.

Shape magazine used to have doctors and scientists on the masthead as consulting editors, although I think this is no longer the case. Women's Health would do well to do the same -- in any case, I wouldn't trust it, and I wouldn't trust Men's Health either, if this is the quality of editorial oversight.
