I still want to be Hollywood skinny.
I know it seems unhealthy but I know I would look good in my clothes. Right now, things just don't look as good, I'm really curvy and it doesn't make that nice sillouette. There is a reason the designers use tall and thin "hangers" (models). I just dont' think I have the discipline though.

don't know if it matters, but as a guy I thought I'd register an opinion on "hollywood skinny" -- looks good for models because of the clothing, but most guys prefer some curves. Not fat, just curvy.
Just thought I'd offer up another viewpoint -- good luck with whatever you want for yourself.

I'd say get better clothes! I'm nowhere near Hollywood skinny, but I look damn fine in some of my clothes. Designers use skinny "hangers", but normal stores sell clothes for normal-shaped people. My favorite - Zara Woman. Every time I try on pants there, I can find multiple pairs that fit me very well. Just shop around a bit and find some brands that flatter your body.

Off the subject - sort of?
I guess it's been talked about to death in the tabloids, but I just want to vent. Lindsey Lohan used to look so hot. Now she's *stupidly* skinny and blond. Bleh. Nothing against blonds at all, but her hair was gorgeous on her. Who's advising these girls?? Someone has got to tell them what "beautiful" really is!

I too sometimes wish I was hollywood thin. However, then when I actually see a real person standing next to me that is hollywood thin, I don't think it's attractive. I know personally my fiance would cry himself to sleep everynight if I lost my T&A (especiall the T). Hollywood thin is attractive to females, and since they are usually the one's that buy the magazines, that's who they cater to. Have you ever picked up playboy or any other men's magazine, those girls are curvy and beautiful! Kate Moss wouldn't make the cut.
BTW - I saw a comparison picture once of Cindy Crawford in the 90's and then now. She used to be known as the model that was about 10pds heavier than most models at the time (but that didn't hurt her career of course). However, now she's trying to fit into the "Hollywood thin" look and in my opinion, her body was much more beautiful in the 90's. She looked healthy and vibrant and like a woman.
I'm really hoping this waif thin thing passes and once again the natural shape of the woman will be praised.

Just out of curiosity, at what point did the models that look like they are heroine junkies become "hot"? I think it is sick looking. My husband among ALOT of other men I know think that it is very feminine and attractive for a woman to have curves and some shape to her. I think so too! Heck a real woman with a real body even turns my head! Even looking back through time, do you recall seeing any bony greek goddess statues or paintings?. No way!. Women were portrayed as the way they should be, curvy and veluptuous, that's what delight's the senses. Not some jacked up bony skeleton!

My fiance always calls himself a "boob man" - he loves boobs! We were out with friends the other night, and that guy described himself as an "ass man" - he's more attracted to nice butts. I have never ever in my life heard a guy describe himself as a "ribs guy!" I have heard my guy and his friends refer to skinny girls as "nipples on ribs," but, in case it wasn't clear, that's an insult, not a complement! BTW, that's how they've been describing Lindsay Lohan, Renee Zelweger, and Brittany Murphy since each of their respective huge weight losses! Those same guys also describe skinny girls as "breakable" and "un-F***-able" as well!

I 100% agree...Celebs look good w/ curves, and I really think it amounts to the body type.
Most people know what body type they are. If you don't, wrap your pointer finger and your thumb around the opposite wrist. If they overlap your small boned, if they just touch your medium, if they don't touch your large.

I know where you are coming from. I too wish I could be that slim and skinny and look awesome in anything I wanted too. It's really hard not to want to be like that when we are bombarded with images of these women every day, all day. But what we're not considering is that it's these people's job is to look like that. They are at the gym for 3 to 4 hours a day with someone who helps them look like that. Then they go home and have a nutritionist help them with their eating. They don't have the snacks that we do lying around and they don't have the 9 to 5 jobs that we do. I barely have enough time to fit in a 30 minute run everyday!
The best thing to do is think about how they get that way everytime you see those models and imagine the type of life they have to live to get like that (Do you really want to have to not eat that tiny piece of chocolate every once and a while? Do you really want to resort to fasting to look good in jeans?)
No one should tell you that it's wrong for wanting to be hollywood skinny, it's wrong for Hollywood to tell you that you should be that skinny. My advise is be realistic, work hard on looking how you want to while being realistic and healthy about it, and don't forget to reward your self for trying. We're all stuck with what God gave us and you can accept that and make the best of it or hurt yourself trying to change it.

Blame our media for promoting "Hollywood Skinny". There are so many young girl sick because they think they have to look like a walking stick. In the real world I don't know any men who want a woman with a little boys body. The men I know and talk to all say the same thing, when they lay down at night they want a woman who's curvy and soft. Not fat but some meat is a good thing. If you take these covergirls (the super skinny one's) out of the clothes and chisel off the makeup I bet they don't look that good. God created us with curves for a purpose.

If I ever got Hollywood skinny I think my family and friends would have an intervention for me and place me in an anorexic rehab. Real people do not look like that. And while I think a little airbrushing would be nice on occasion, it's not real either. Sigh.

I am like the original poster. I have Nicole at her thinnest on my desktop and though she is dangerously thin I want to look like that! I want to be tiny and wear size 4's and 5's. I wish I could make myself only drink coffee and eat salads every day! I read all the above posts but I don't care too much what men want, I want what I want! I want to look like a model with long to die for thin legs, sexy flat stomach, and wear tiny dresses! It's desireable to me because there are VERY few people in the world that have that much discipline with their diet. I lift weights so I'll never be that thin. I do want to be healthy and feel good so I'm sure I'll have to settle for more mass but I know I could get a little closer to that Hollywood quota and look better than I do now.

To today's first poster - who wants to look like Paris and Nicole and wear size 4's and 5's - they don't wear size 4's and 5's! They wear size 0's or 00's or have clothes specially made for them! Do you know how hard it is to find clothes in those sizes, or how expensive it is to have clothes specially made? If you're bigger than the usual 2-14 size range, you can go to a plus-sized store (not the best of options, but it works). If you're smaller than that - you can either wear children's clothes, which will probably be way too short, or you can have your clothes specially made for you! You'd need to be as rich as they are too! The REALLY expensive designers also make clothes that sized... But the average person can't shop for every-day clothes there either!
Right now I wear around a size 5/6, but at one point in high school I wore a 0 or a 2 - when I was pre-pubescent! And even then, I didn't even begin to approach skinny like Nicole or Lindsey or whomever else you look to!
If these stars claim to be a size 4 or 5, they are lying! Be careful what you wish for!

I agree with the above poster who said that no one is going to change your mind. You're the only one who can define what is beautiful to you. Just be careful about what you idolize.
I say this because there is one part of your 2nd post that concerns me. You said, "I wish I could make myself only drink coffee and eat salads"......"very few people in the world have that much discipline with their diet".
Maybe you didn't mean that literally, but in case you did, those two things do not go hand in hand. At the point where people are eating a super restrictive diet like that it is about control, not discipline. And when it becomes about control it becomes an eating disorder. My mother suffers from anorexia, and trust me, that is NEVER a beautiful thing. Think - so repulsed by food that you become physically ill from eating anything that isn't on your list of 3 or 4 foods that are "acceptable" to eat.
So maybe that is not what you mean at all, but just be careful about how you think of it. It can be a dangerous pattern before you even notice it. Just stay healthy no matter what weight you decide to be.

I agree with the last poster, the OP's comment about wanting to drink only coffee and eat salads is a comment that sounds alarmingly like someone who may be borderline anorexic.
I know, because at one point, my sister was very restrictive about her diet and had me very concerned--For my wedding, she had to buy a size 2 dress and have it tailored to be a size 0. Since then, thankfully, she has much more realistic and healthy in her relationship towards food.... Remember that problems with food can not only be on the excesive side, but also on the restrictive side.... Neither Obesity, nor anorexia are good for our health (both physical or mental!)
For years, I wished I was a thin as my sister, until one day, i realized that even with a restrictive diet, I'd never be her (naturally) thin size nor her weight-- I tend to build muscle (under my cloak of fat), so being rail thin is something that would be very tough for me to do unless I stopped eating entirely....
One of my female friends refers to the "Hollywood thin" types of women as "lollipop heads" -- i.e. they are so thin that their bodies look out of proportion to their heads... LOL (I tend to agree with her--I don't find the ulra skinny attractive at all)
I love the vibrancy and life that some of the more normal-sized women have-- such as Oprah, Queen Latifah and the woman who used to play the mom on Home Improvement (in fact, when she tried to lose weight, the producers told her NOT to, so that she would look like the average mom.) Even if you look at old classic "pin-up" posters (or even at Marilyn Monroe), you'd see that women were much curvier in those posters...
What's happened is a reversal of roles in the modern day-- in ancient times, the wealthier you were, the fatter you were... it was a sign of prosperity. Now, the wealthier you are, the thinner-- both due to diet and access fitness trainers, etc.
I understand where the OP is coming from in terms of wanting to look "better" in her eyes, but understand that that ideal is not always genetically possible... In the meantime, take a quick peek in my thread about "dressing for success" (in the links area now)--live for the moment and make yourself as beautiful inside and outside as you can in your current body-- you know that you're in "transition", but celebrate any little accomplishments towards you goal of a healthier self (hopefully something you are doing because you are working for yourself, not because of outside invluences).
Take heart-- many of us are here and in different shapes and sizes--we all hope to improve our health, so don't get discouraged along the way.

I'm currently a high school junior and a teenager who being a girl, am in the process of developing my womanly curves, something I'm still getting used to. But with all the fashion hype and the desiring to be Hollywood thin craze seemingly at its peak, there are numerous girls I know or know of that have become anorexic or bulimic. It's horrifying and honestly just downright scary. Being Hollywood thin is just silly unless you're naturally, genetically built that way. Forcing yourself to fit into a mold that doesn't suit you is just a method of self-torture, something that you don't deserve. You should always believe that you should have the best of whatever life has to offer because you've earned it. There's nothing with wanting to enhance your own body image or improve the shapeliness of your physique, but there is a point where it becomes a ridiculous obsession that can turn deadly.
Seriously, would you rather be a little chubby though healthy and live a long prosperous life, or would you prefer being emaciated, barely capable of functioning on your restrictive amount of nourishment that when ultimately summed up is a mere few hundred calories, not to mention the fact that by lowering your intake to such a miniscule amount, you're causing yourself to be lacking or insufficient of many nutritional needs basic for your body to function properly.
Furthermore, celebrities have personal trainers, dieticians and a whole entourage catering to their every wish or command. So to some degree, they know what they're doing health wise. You on the other hand, unless you do an extensive research on health, nutrition and dieting, probably aren't and won't be as well informed about losing weight and will most likely be undergoing a slow, agonizing, hunger-inducing death: starving.
Lastly, if I were a celebrity or were paid to look good, I would be pretty damn smoking hot!

You can't possibly think they look good! I know I need to lose weight, but at least I'm not so mentally unfit that I think I need to get down to a size 0.

You sound like a good example for other teenagers--and your understanding about the problems of anorexia or bulimia is wise beyond your years....
Sadly, the advancements of media, including the internet, has transformed women around the world--in the past, women in many countries outside of the U.S. who were full-figured and voluptuous and considered to be more desirable....somewhere, not long ago, I read a statistic that in some countries, the access to U.S. media has caused women to develop similar eating disorders, due to being bombarded constantly by media images touting the excessively thin.
Unfortunately, this cycle will probably not vanish as quickly as some other fashions (such as foot binding, corsets and powdered wigs), because we are constantly bombarded by the images of the modern-day "ideal beauties" through advertising....
Keep your chin up-- I'm sure that you are a beautiful young woman--with an attitude like that, you are bound to succeed in whatever fitness goals you have!

Too Thin is not a turn on.
I am a guy, and I can't remember the last skinny girl who I wanted. I used to like Courtney Cox, then she got too thin. Lindsay Lohan was plenty saucy in "Mean Girls" then she got too thin. My wife is a good 15 pounds heavier than she was when we met-- and she looks a ton better.

it's alarming to read someone wanting to be as thin as nicole richie!! she obviously has an eating disorder. even if she wants to look the way she does, it is still classified as an eating disorder. get yourselves into therapy before it's too late, for god's sake!! once you start the bulimic or anorexic ball rolling, it is very time consuming and difficult to turn it all around.

may i suggest taking a read of the thread about celebrities who promote obesity by carrying extra weight? the real issue i think we should all focus on is one of maintaing good health, no matter what size we may be. this is said over and over again, but i guess for some it cannot be said enough. just remember that there are many super-skinny women who are unhappy and do not have throngs of fans or photographers chasing after them. it's not just being skinny that makes these young celebrities popular, it's cold hard cash...

I'm 5 foot 3, and no way am I Hollywood skinny (down to 138lbs after losing about 35) - and I'm all curves, which is just my body type. And I LOVE IT! There are lots of beautiful clothes to show off those curves (in both modest and not so modest ways), and I've certainly noticed much wanted and unwanted male attention. Celebrate your body and your womanly curves - look around at the beautiful sensual voluptuous women out there that you walk past on the street. Accept your body for the amazing creation that it is - and WORK it!

Don't know if you've been watching the news lately--but there have been some deaths in the model industry due to anorexia and Italy recently adopted a decision that models are too thin and there needs to be a weight increase. You can find these topics in a google search and go read the articles.
Not that I don't blame you. I look at those VS models and think I want to be one--but I don't have the genes for it and I love to eat.
Remember, being skinny doesn't make any other problems you may have in your life automatically disappear and bring about happiness. I agree with whomever said get different clothes. Find the clothes that fit you, and forget about what size the labels are. Igore it. I mean, come on, the sizes are changing all the time. One size pants from American Eagle says I'm a size 6 and then from the same brand I'm a size 10. I've also got a size 4 and 11 in my closet, so you can't trust those labels.

To the women that think men find extremely thin women sexy: Ask around. Seriously, find guys that will be truthful and ask them to point out women they would find sexy, in real life, not on a screen. Better than even money says they will not choose the itty bitty women whose thighs don't touch unless they are crossed.
The "super thin is good" thing is a myth that we buy into during formative years of self-esteem (like 14-18 years of age) and many of us hang onto. Thank heavens that my self-perception has been shaken up since 17!!! I work with and talk to a lot of men of many ages and only about 1 in 10 find that look attractive at all. Moreover, at least half prefer a bit extra. This isn't to say that obese is desirable to a large percentage, but certainly being comfortable in ones own skin goes a LONG way to making you attractive to others, no matter the actual size of your body.
In point of fact, being underweight puts you at the highest risk of health problems, in comparison to overweight or somewhat obese. Way to go, super skinny!

I've got to say this is the #1 reason I'm so happy I GAINED weight. When I was in high school I was 5'8 130-135lbs and I felt so fat. I wanted to be Hollywood skinny then and wasn't satisfied with my size 5-7 body. I gained up to 180 and have now lost back to 143 and I feel fabulous. I'm wearing between a size 6-8 now and I literally feel so sexy it's amazing. I now know that I have a body men like, curves not sticks and I have the self confidence that men also like.
I'm sorry but Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, Terri Hatcher... are built like 12 year old girls not women, and the only men I know attracted to 12 year old girls are called pedophiles.

Wow, I don't even know where to begin with this thread because I have so many opinons on it. I've read a lot of positive things and I've read a lot of things that are very scary.
I've struggled with a life-long obsession with food and weight. At one point, in college, I reached my lowest, losing 40 lbs. in 2.5 months, becoming anorexic.
I woke up one morning and my fiance (now husband) looked at me while I was getting dressed and said, "wow, you've really been working hard on your body, just don't lose your curves, okay?" And it was almost like he had slapped me in the face with that sentence. (He, btw, had no idea I was only eating one small meal a day). I started wondering what I was torturing myself for. It wasn't for him, it wasn't even for me, I was doing it because that's what I thought I was supposed to be. That is what is idolized and that is considered perfection.
Flash to the present. I am now working on being the healthiest I can be. I eat 5-6x per day, and workout 3-5x per week. I love my body and I love my curves. I am married, but I still have to beat men off with a stick.
I don't think all men desire the same shaped females, but I do know they like ones that are healthy and able to bear their children (this is what they are naturally programed to look for).
A side note. I've read that the most attractively rated females are women with waist-to-hip ratios of .8 and a little lower (divide your hip measurement into your waist measurement) no matter what dress size you are.
I believe it's all about health and confidence, and we should be role models for the younger women, girls, and children in our lives. Break the self-hatred cycle. We are ALL beautiful...even if the media tells us we're not.

3:03 I agree...I think some people are way too obsessed w sizes. For example, I was JUST having a convo w my bf last night about how there can be Girl A who is thinner than Girl B, but GIrl A insists on squeezing herself into a size 0 and has her "love handles" (which even thin girls can have) hanging over the top of her jeans. Or you can have Girl B who is a 6 and wears a 6 bc it fits & is flattering & I will tell you, Girl B will look better & maybe even thinner than A bc she is wearing clothes based on what FITS & not SOME NUMBER. I have pants that are a 3/4 and I have pants that are a 10! And I don't care!
Also, stores are making their sizes smaller these days. Example: I bought a pr of Abercrombie jeans like 3 years ago that were a 6 and they were getting worn out & too big bc I had lost some wt. So I went back to the store to get new ones & tried on a 4 thinking that was the size I needed. Um...no. I couldn't even get them over my hips! So I tried the 6...still too small! Then I remembered...the sad thing is that a lot of females that shop at that store ARE super skinny & don't have hips! Well I do, & I am fine with it so I now shop at stores that allow for my curves ;) & I buy clothes that flatter my body type.
On the other hand...OP, I can understand where you're coming from...TO A POINT. What I mean is that I too want to lose weight even though my friends, family, & even strangers tell me I look fine the way I am, but I am not happy with myself & unfortunately I know A LOT of women that feel this way & can't be happy w themselves. I am at a healthy avg weight/BMI but I know I can do better. And by better I mean that my ideal would be looking like a model in SHAPE or Self or fitness (but even some of them are too thin!) I don't even really care so much about the scale I just want my clothes to fit better & be/look more toned toned/athletic/healthy. On the other hand, I don't want to take it to the extreme that you do. Hollywood skinny IS NOT HEALTHY looking. When my boyfriend sees a really thin girl..he's jokes that "she really needs to eat a few hamburgers!" Kinda mean, but he doesn't like waifs, he likes curves. I just hope that it's not too late for you to change your way of thinking/your ideal. Looking/feeling/being healthy should be your goal & most of those skinny stars are none of the above! I've been reading all of the comments and they are quite interesting, most of them basically saying that the hollywood skinny type isn't worth it- and women should accept themselves for who they are- curves and all.
While I totally and completely agree, I must admitt that I would do anything to be skinny. Not just the size 4 or size 5 type skinny, but the size 0 size 1 type. I'm a very tall and athletic girl. At 6'0 I weigh 147 lbs. Even though I don't think I'm fat, I do wish I was skinny.
For some reason I seem to relate being skinny with being happy, and although I know that's not true- and I have to be happy with myself more than anything; I still can't get over wanting to be skinny. Whether American's will admitt it or not; weight is a huge issue these days...and practically all that really matters. Everyone's trying to lose weight and get fit...people constantly buy 100 calorie snacks and are trying new diet pills. Being skinny is attractive, and hollywood stars show case this now more than ever.
I do think that being curvy and accepting yourself for who you are is important, but I'm not affraid to admitt I'm very self concious about myself and would give anything to be the "super model." type. Right now I'm trying to focus on other things besides my weight- but deep down I know it'll always be a problem I have with myself.
