Treats for Ice Cream Junkies

I'm an Ice Cream Junkie. Summer is just so perfect for Ice Cream. And I've been partaking WAY too much. I'm trying hard to convince myself that Italian ices are just as good (probably more sugar than ice cream but less fat I'm sure) and the new Edie’s "Grand Light Slow Churned" ice cream is goooood! (just 140 cals per serving I think, but the problem is you have to have the whole tub in the house!). I've discovered the following little treat that is soooo good and soooo easy. Anyone else have an ice cream replacement treat they'd like to share??

Melon Garnita

1 REALLY ripe cantaloupe or honeydew melon (and I mean really ripe) (I also added a slpash of homemade ginger simple syrup)

Seed and coarsely chop melon

Place melon in blender and whirl till it liquefies (you'll have to do this in stages, I ended up mashing the remaining bits with a potato masher)

Place in a deep flat container and put in freezer

About every half hour, pull it out and scrape it with a fork. You want to get really nice small crystals like shaved ice. Should take about 3 to 4 hours to freeze completely. Scrap a serving and enjoy!

I think at the core though, "I'm an ice cream junkie" is really interesting.

The way you say it seems like you're proud of it. being an ice cream junkie is your identity. food for thought.

You know, I'm the orginal poster and I'm really a bit upset over the negative tone of the first respones. This community is about peer support, is it not? not about putting others down and making snap judgements about the core of another's identity.

I'm off with my evidently squishy ice cream center. Last time i post here. thanks for making me feel good today (NOT)

Ice Cream Junkie

I share your problem with ice cream, especially in summer. First, I tried to break the habit of being emotionally connected with ice cream by not eating any at all for 21 days. Today is my 21st day, and I have not had any ice cream. I think I will be able to eat it with more moderation in the future.

In the meantime, frozen yogurt is close, and has less calories. Also, try the no fat chocolate Fudgsicle, in your supermarket freezer. Not too bad. Also, try only buying individual portions, like the popsicles, to avoid over-indulging. Good luck!

I don't think the responder meant to be rude and it sounds like they attempted an apology or clarification. This is touchy stuff. Sounds like the OP is a tad bit sensitive about the Ice cream habit. I know I am about my drinking...I hate to be told I drink too much. But I do.

Frozen cherries. So yummy.

Just buy a bag of 'em, dump maybe a cup or so into a bowl, and eat. Lots of fiber, and extremely tasty.

Also: raspberry or strawberry sorbet, with just a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Not very high in calories or fat, if you stick to the actual serving size.

To the original poster: sometimes humor doesn't translate so well to email or internet bulletin boards, and from where I'm standing, it really doesn't look like anyone was trying to take a jab at you. Maybe just keep in mind the limitations of this type of communication, and try (although I know it can be hard, if it's something that would normally punch your buttons) to adjust your perception of the message accordingly. It's less stressful that way. :o)

other "ice creams"

I have found a slighlty better alternative. It is in no way intended to trick yourself into thinking you;re eating ice cream when you're not.. but it is a nice, creamy, sweet. frozen treat so there.

get some light cool whip and freeze it... it comes in a few different flavors like original, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. a small dish hits the spot and is much lighter than ice cream so you don't feel like you have just eaten a brick.

PS: can't we all just get along?? :)

frozen grapes

one of my best guys friends -- who incidentally lost 100 pounds in about a year -- loves sweets. we were on the phone the other night and he was eating frozen red grapes. i was giggling and saying that's the wierdest thing i've ever heard. then i got grapes from the market and froze half of them. IT'S DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

not only do they taste great, but b.c they are frozen you have to savor the flavor them and suck on them. try it. i was doubtful, but it's great.

Skinny Cow

I love the skinny cow ice cream sandwhiches. They probably aren't as healthy as some of the other posts but I LOVE them. I count calories so I just watch my calories and allow for half a sandwhich after dinner (140 cal. for the whole sandwhich).

I haven't eaten real ice cream in such a long time I'm convinced it tastes like real ice cream. I've always been partial to ice cream sandwhices over a bowl of ice cream, so we may be speaking two different languages :)

I'm sorry about that one post. I thought it was a little harsh as well. My only suggestion is to not let others deter you from such a wonderful forum of discussion and education.
