Best Breakfast

What is enough food to get the metabolism going, but little enough to keep the calories down?

I'm just not a morning eater, but everyone is telling me that I must eat in the morning.

oatmeal & yogurt

...is what I eat almost every morning. I use Quaker old fashioned oats, which don't take very long to cook and are much tastier (and better for you) than the quick or instant stuff, which I think tastes like wallpaper paste.

I don't know if it's SO low in calories, but those complex carbs give you a lot of energy -- great for right before a workout, or just to keep you going until lunch. I've had success with having this for breakfast, and then a very light lunch and a small, low-carb dinner.

RE: Breakfast

I always love the scrambled eggs...no butter...just eggs. Also oatmeal w/ raisins.

But what I really would like to know is this:
What is a good dry cereal that is "healthy" for breakfast (Mueslix, Kashi, etc.)

I have a hubby who detests both eggs and oatmeal and Im trying to contribute to his diet as wel! heheheh

my breakfast soulution

I'm not a huge fan of breakfast (who has time in the mornings??), but I'm trying really hard not to skip it. I've come up with something that gets me to eat and satisfies the "nibblies"

I mix together in a plastic baggie or cup:
1/2 cup Wheat Chex (They are just slightly sweetened)
about 2 Tablespoos of dried cranberries
10 or so whole Almonds
(sometimes a pinch of dried coconut for variety)

I nibble throught the train ride or at my desk in the morning. I figure its got under 200 cal. Cause you nibble it like trail mix, takes longer to eat, so it combines my breakfast and morning snack needs

good cereal for good hubbies!

Kashi Good Friends is awesome. it has tons of fiber so beware the first few times you eat it. may want to avoid coffee consumption withit, but every morning, I add about 1/3 cup of blueberries to 1-1.25 cups of kashi and skim and it's great..keeps me energized and i get my fiber and my antioxidants....

Eggs 1/2 eggs, 1/2 egg whites and veggies

perfect combination of protein, fats and very good for you carbs. Any restaurant/deli will make this too. It's very easy, not too much fat and will stave off cravings while providing an excellent source of energy and vitamins. It really is as easy as ordering a sausage and egg biscuit, you just have to go to a different place. Also, make sure you request no oil if you're not making this yourself. The fat can add up very quickly.

I usually either have a banana and cup of skim milk, yogurt and apple, or oatmeal for breakfast. They are all pretty low in calories and usually keep me going to mid morning, then I need a snack, I usually have a piece of fruit and then it'll hold out till lunchtime.

Also, I have a milk shake sometimes, 1 cup skim milk, 1 banana, and a few ice cubes to make the consistency a bit thicker and more filling, plus in the summer months, it's so refreshing.

Here's my favorite

Grapenuts cereal with lowfat milk or soymilk and 1/2 sliced banana or sweet melon, raisins and frozen blueberrys. I don't use any sweetener because soy milk is a little sweet.

breakfast

i have oatmeal and coffee pretty much everyday for breakfast. i don't have enough time to eat at home so it is perfect for work. i also like those fruit and cottage cheese doubles from the grocery store. another option is cantaloupe and cottage cheese or canned peaches (in light syrup) and cottage cheese. the cottage cheese has a lot of protein and some carbs, but the fruits adds the carbs to keep you going until lunch.

over and out.

Kashi rocks, but how does it taste??

I just got their granola bars and am pretty pleased with the tast. How is the cereal? Can you compare the taste to anything?

I like a cottage cheese doubles in the morning. Its good protein and satisfies the sweet tooth.

Kashi

The Kashi Go lean crunch is good. it's crunchy and has a sweet taste to it. the other flavors of cereal are good too, but a bit more bland. I would try the Kashi Go Lean crunch first - it is my favorite

Cottage cheese is a great breakfast food. I usually have that with plain yogurt and fruit mixed together. It's really filling and better for you than cereal.

I make a veggie omelette with sustitute eggs then top it off with 1/2 a cup of 1% milk. That's about 100 cals and keeps me going until my mid-morning snack.

I like the Kashi Heart to Heart cereal. The closest thing I can compare it to is Cheerios, but lightly sweetened. Tasty!
The Kashi Go Lean Crunch is great mixed with low fat yogurt.
I also eat their instant oatmeal for breakfast in the mornings. It's easy to make when I get to work so I can eat at my desk, and it's very hearty & healthy compared to other instant oatmeal, so you're full for awhile.

I have .....

1 whole wheat english muffin (toasted) - 135 cal, 3 g fiber
1 large poached egg - 70
1 piece canadian bacon - 35

(all caloric info taken from manufacturer's information on the products I purchase)
Total - 240 calories plus decent amount of fiber and protein.

My own version of the egg McMuffin but alot more satisfying. 1/2 cup of fruit or topping with some roasted veggies would be a good accompaniment to this.

Healthy Breakfast

I have Kellogg's Complete (wheat bran flakes) which is good tasting and has 5 grams of fiber. I add half a banana, an ounce of chopped almonds, and Skim Plus milk, which is fat free but better tasting than regular skim milk. This is low calorie and filling for about three hours.

california style bread

my latest favorite breakfast: one slice of california-style high protein bread (delicious, lots of whole grains, no refined anything), toasted, and topped with low-fat cottage cheese and freshly cracked black pepper. about 130 calories, depending on how much CC you use, and pretty filling!

if i've got the time/inclination, i'll slice up a few cherry tomatoes as well. yum. :)

Breakfast

A good dry cereal for breakfast is Kellogg's "Complete" wheat bran flakes. 90 calories per serving with 5 grams of fat. Not as horrible tasting as all the other bran cereals that I tried, and does not get soggy. Have it with a banana, and maybe a few almonds or walnuts, some skim milk (I like the taste of "Skim Plus" skim milk) and you are good to go!

baked apple eggs or flax and whey pancakes

I eat either a baked apple and eggs (chop and cook/bake apple, add cinnamon, then throw in a pan with one or two eggs and scramble together)

or I eat flax and when pancakes (one scoop vanilla whey, 1 tbsp flax meal, and 1 or two eggs, mix together then cook like a pancake).

both sound a little weird, but taste amazing! And, they are both very healthy for you and give you a ton of energy!

The best breakfast is a perfectly cooked omelet with goat cheese, a little ham and scallions, with a spring salad on the side, lemon/mustard dressing and a croissant, hot, buttered and orange juice. Not what you were asking but that really is!!!

A good, healthy breakfast is steel cut oatmeal, or an egg white (maybe with a yolk) and veggies or whole grain bread with flax seed oil and tofu.

Fruit Smoothies!

My normal breakfast is a fruit smoothie with one slice of wheat toast topped with Peanut Butter. Yum! I could eat it for all 3 meals.

The smoothie consists of:
frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, peaches, etc.)
one banana
FF vanilla yogurt
O.J.

Enjoy!

Kashi Golean Cereal!

It's awesome!

Made of whole grains so CHEW THOROUGHLY or you will get some intense intestinal gas.... However, the vitamin & mineral content is on the low side, so mixing it with Kellogg's Smart Start is a good idea... :-)

I also like the Kashi GoLean instant whole-grain cereal. It's made with whole grains, so again, CHEW THOROUGHLY... and you can't just add hot water, it must be cooked to make the grains softer. :-)

At the very minimum, I usually have a 1/2 cup of instant, or regular oatmeal or whole grain cereals...

Sometimes I'll add an apple or strawberries or a banana. These seem to really help tide me over until lunchtime. :-)

These days, I try to eat my bigger meal at lunch and then to eat a lighter dinner. :-) If I know that i will be working out more intensely, I will eat a few more calories throughout the day.

protein protein protein

I see a huge difference in my hunger and snacking depending on whether I had protein or carbs for breakfast -- try it and see. So I typically eat 2 eggs, just fried on toast or hard-boiled, and when I really want cereal I have Kashi Go Lean, which has more protein and fiber than most and is yummy. I now prefer the less sugary cereals like Go Lean (granola or Kashi Crunch is too sweet) and I associate them with a nice comforting bread-y taste, as someone said like less sweet cheerios. Also I love Nature's Path "Optimum Power" oatmeal -- in packets and instant cooking, but more whole-grainy (has flax seeds in it).
Seriously, changing my breakfasts was the most imp change I ever made. Old ones just kickstarted the sugar roller coaster ever morning.

I used to skip breakfast a lot, but then a friend told me that you have to have breakfst in the morning to "kick start" your metabolism. That's all I needed to hear!!! :)
I'm a surfer, so on mornings when I'm going into the water I'll either have a protein bar or I do a protein shake with whole wheat toast. The shake is ALL protein, so I get the carbs from the bread. I'll often put some peanut butter on the toast to add a little fat too. This breakfast is great because it's not too heavy and doesn't really fill me up too much.
On mornings when I'm not in the water I go all out!! :)

Plain Kashi Go Lean tastes disgusting, but it's really good for you.

Kashi Go Lean Crunch is CANDY -- take a look at the sugar content on that stuff, you might as well be eating Froot Loops.

LOL!!! I SO agree on the plain Kashi Go Lean. It's like eating cardboard!! One of those cereals that you only want one serving of!! :) It's got like 10 grams of fiber per serving so if you can choke it down you'll get close to half your daily fiber content in one sitting.

@ hard bioled eggs is my favortie. If I have time I chop them up and spray ican believe it's butter spray. I also have a cup of coffee and gum. If I am late I just take them with me and eat them on the way. It also keeps me full! Steel Cut Oatmeal in the rice cooker

I make four servings of steel-cut oats at a time in the rice cooker and portion it out into microwavable containers. for the rest of the week I just nuke, throw in some rasins and eat! Making it with milk gives it enough staying power to see me until lunch and makes it tasty enough to skip the sugar.

My recipie:
1 c steel-cut oats
2 c water (use 3 cups if making on the stove top)
heavy pinch salt
when the rice cooker dings, stir in
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 c whole milk
and let sit in on "keep warm" for another 5 minutes

why you should eat breakfast

i was told that the reason you should eat breakfast is that if you don't eat at least 1 hr after waking up your body will start to think there is a scarcity in food or that you are starving. Therefore it will begin to store whatever food you eat next into fat as quickly as it can to protect your muscles from the starvation mode. So yes eating breakfast is important.

protein shake

I am not a morning eater, and I am usually rushed in the a.m. A lot of mornings, I just blend up a protein shake - protein powder and water - and slam it with my vitamins. Pretty much tastes like dirt, but is super fast, doesn't seem like I'm eating, and keeps me going in the morning.

More on shakes, and protein-rich breakfasts

I LOVE smoothies. And I have one of those "blenders on a stick" - the thing from Krups or whatever that you hold, with the blade at the end that whizzes around - you can blend up some yogurt, bananna, frozen berries in 5 sec and the cleanup is nothing compared to a regular blender. Plus it's GREAT for making creamed soups, mashed potatoes, etc. You can blend cooked veggies so creamy you'd swear there's dairy in there, but there's not.

But my OTHER breakfast is protein-rich...eggs, maybe some veggie sausage, sauteed potatoes. And the only time I ever lost significant weight was when I was staying at a guesthouse in Uganda where they made these enormous cooked breakfasts every day and I'd tank up on eggs, sausage, cafe au lait, fruit, etc - then skip lunch or just have a banana, and then a very light and early dinner. But I do not recommend this if a. you are not exercising every day and b. living in a tropical country.

Yogurt and Cereal

I have Nutrisystem cereals and yogurt almost every work day morning. I buy the cereals on-line about every six months. I have a huge box delivered to my office. I like them because they have extra protein (over regular cereal), they taste good; there is a variety of kinds to have, they are pretty easy to get and store and they are portion-controlled. In a pinch and/or blood sugar drop at an inconvenient time, I can grab one for a quick snack. The portion control part is important to me as my tendency is to eat too large portions.

I like reading about how all of the other posters manage their eating. I learn tricks to help me manage to eat healthy and maintain my weight. LC
