I was hyperthyroid for a while..I have Graves disease..So I chose to have my Thyroid removed, they took the whole thing June of 2003, so it's been 3 years now..I am now on levoxal, they check my levels every 6 months now. My meds have been ajusted a few times..Just recently, I said to myself, I should have it checked, because I feel like I can't lose weight..Then I said to myself, are you really staying on track, and really watching ,and excersising? The answer to myself was NO..So now I am trying really hard, and I told myself, I will not blame my thyroid meds, until I know for sure, I have done everything I should to try to lose weight..

If you are hypothyrid, it is VERY hard to lose, and very fustrating!!! You know the "normal" range is very big, ( some people feel good at the bottom of the range, and some people feel good at the top, or middle) ,so if you are feeling hypothroid, but the DR says, your in the "range" tell them, your not feeling good, and would like to increase your meds a little, and if they won't, go to a different DR.. I have a great DR, that would go more by how I was feeling, then the lab results!!

I just joined, I'm hoping others will too. I've struggled with thyroid problems since I was a teen. It is super hard for me to lose weight. I feel like I have to work twice as hard as everyone else. *sigh* this group could really be helpful and motivating.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism over 14 years and have been on synthroid of varying levels since then. As soon as I got on medication I felt much better. The medication gets us in a normal range, so there is no reason why hypothyroidism would affect your weight loss or gain anymore. I gained lots of weight over the past few years, but it was due to diet, not the disease. I recommend really thinking about what the cause is of your excess weight, I think if you are really honest with yourself you will see its your behavior and not the disease. Sorry to be harsh, but we all have to take responsibility for ourselves and not rush to blame things on diseases that are under control with medication.

This post is really inspiring! I don't have hyperthyroidism, but I'm so in awe of those of you who do, and still say "am I really doing absolutely everything I can?" I think if I were in your position, I'd give up! It's hard enough losing weight without having an additional condition!

Being hypothyroid definitly affects your weight. If your dose of medication is not correct, one of the first syptoms is weight gain. If your dose is correct, then I agree you need to really see if your doing everything you can to lose weight. Just knowing that there is a problem that could hold us back from losing, is very fustrating..

Recent diagnosis

My dr has been tracking my increase in my thyroid for the last year. I was very surprised. That would explain a lot though, because last fall I joined a gym, I went faithfully everyday for at least 2 months, did the weight training and the elliptical machines, and I was doing the Atkins diet. Normally, this would start working within about 2 weeks, but I never lost more than 5 pounds, my clothes started fitting slightly differently, but not to the degree they normally would have. So, until I found your messages, I was not sure if it was this change in my thyroid or not. I am glad you are here, and for those of you who are thinking it is because you have not been following your diet or exercise in the most successful manner, please also realize that it may not be that alone, it may be that, due to this thyroid problem, you have to work even harder. I just hope you are not too hard on yourselves, I know for me it's going to be a complete relearning process about understanding how my body works. Good luck to us all!

dealing with hyperthyroidism

hi everyone --
I need all of your help / advice. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism over 5 months ago. I lost a ton of weight, went through the heart tremors, etc. Now, 5 months later, I have gained the weight I lost back, PLUS 25 lbs. I go to the gym religiously and have been dieting. I haven't lost a lb. in fact, I keep gaining. My doctor has me on methimizole. I take a pill and a half a day -- is it the medication? Do you think it has made me HYPO? I'm so lost, confused, frustrated, depressed.. i could go on. Please help me. Advice? Comments?

Hypothyroidism & weight loss

A few years ago, I lost 50 lbs. For me to do this, I was running 10 kilometers 4 times a week. I was eating about 1500-1800 calories a day. It was an insane time. It took over 10 months to lose the 50 lbs.
And when I cut back the running, I gained weight.
I do not have the same motivation now and I gained the 50 lbs plus another 20.

It is very frustrating having Hypothyroidism and lose weight. I am not sure how else to lose weight except make exercise a full-time thing???
And I learned that taking Hydroxicut has a negative impact on people taking synthroid. OOPS!

I have Hashimoto`s hypothyroidism I am very unhappy

When I was diagnosed I could not even get up off the couch I was so weak. I have been up and down on dosage's . I have gained so much weight . I am angry at my doctor , I was under a lot of stress at work he put me on Paxil . Did not tell me anything about the drug. I started gaining a lot more weight on that. I found out that was a side effect of the drug , I got on line and found all kinds of other people who were angry also because they all gained 40 or more pounds and did not know it was from the Paxil till it was too late and they can`t seem to loose it. I stopped taking it. It was like going off some kind of drug addiction that they put you in the rehab for. I was soooo sick. for 3 months throwing up, body aches, sweats, even my organs inside hurt. I want this weight gone. Even on my medication I have no energy. I am tired and have arthritis. I wonder if my insurance would cover weight surgery because of my health problems. I just want to feel better , have energy and look thinner.

Hypothyroid for 17 years

I too, have hypothyroidism. I started out with Grave's Disease. I took the radioactive Iodine treatment. You can lose weight, but you have to combine both diet with exercise and stay FOCUSED. You will ALWAYS have to watch what you eat and exercise. Oprah has hypothyroidism due to so much stress last year. She blew her thyroid out. Stay focused on your plan and you will soon see results.

Dealing with hyperthyroidism answer.

You should either count calories or points. You can not eat just anything. You must eat a controlled amount everyday or you will gain. I have been fighting with this for 17 years. Watch what you eat or you will be gaining vs. losing. And that can be extremely frustrating and depressing.

Watch what you eat. People with hyperthyroidism must exercise and diet at the same time. We can not eat what other people eat, period! I eat below 1200 calories or 22 or less points a day. I also exercise for 40 minutes plus 5 times a week.

I have had hypothyroidism for about 2 years. At the time I was diagnosed, I weighed about 280 lbs. About 6 months ago, I got sick of being so big, so I started counting calories (I have 1200 or less per day) and exercising. I'm down to 198 and feeling better than ever. So, it's definitely possible to lose weight. You just need to watch yourself.

weight loss hypothyroidism success

This isnt entirely true! I was diagnoses with hypothyroidism a month ago. I have been taking 75mg of levoxy.My TSH level was 55. I lost 5lbs the first 3 weeks doing nothing at all. I didnt change what I was eating or change my exercise I just did regular daily things. I then went on a diet being terrified I wouldnt be able to lose any weight after reading all of these threads.Well I have lost 3.5lbs in one week and I know it isnt just water weight because I have been drinking tons of water everyday..way more that ever before. I was terrified to get on the scale because I knew i'd give up if I didnt lose anything. It is very possible and it really isnt that hard. It isnt any harder than it was for me to lose weight 2 yrs ago before I had hypothyroidism. For those of you who arent able to lose weight..maybe it is your medication. Maybe you should switch to levoxyl. I have been eating 1000 calories a day (no pop even diet)and exercising 3 to 4 times every week for 40 to 60 minutes. Two of those days I walk thats all keeping my pulse down and the other 2 days I exercise vigorously with a high pulse. Hypothyroidism is suppose to slow your heartrate down but mine has been extremely fast when exercising so maybe that is why. Maybe your pulse is too low when exercising. It should be 50 to 90 percent of your maximum heart rate which is 220 minus your age. Everyone is different but there is hope and i wish someone would have posted something like this before I started to I didnt have to panic as much. I am over weight and I have gained 50lbs in the last year and a half. Keep in mind there are a lot of people who have a hard time losing weight even without a thyroid problem. It just depends on you and once your levels are regulated it shouldnt make a difference. If you have enough energy to work out it should work.

Losing weight is a challenge for everybody, whatever their medical profile, mostly because we aren't willing to actually and seriously eat less and exercise more. We're not willing to make a difference in our life styles.

It's so nice to hear that I'm not alone. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism last year. I find it very hard to lose weight. I was going to the gym every day for 30 minutes, and counting my calories. I never lost more that 5lbs. I get so depressed over it I had to be put on anti-depressants. My doctor is no help. I've asked him for help or ideas on what I can do. He just says some people just don't ever lose the weight. I don't know if I can spend my life this big. I have gone to the point of nearly starving myself and I'm still big. I'm also worried about future health problems because of this. Once again my doctor isn't really very helpful when I ask him about it. Thanks everyone in posting their stories. It's nice to know I'm not the only one.

That is not always the case though!! I was eating about 800 calories a day with it also being very low carb, working out 45 minutes per day (every day) on the treadmill. I did this for two weeks and didn't lose ONE pound!!! I also incorporated weights with the treadmill but it didn't matter!!

I was diagnosed with Hypo about 3 months ago after feeling crappy for about a year. (This runs in my family) I am frustrated reading this thread because of those who say the weight gain is from lack of control in diet and exercise. That may be true for some but not always the case. Weight gain is a symptom.

I run 25 miles a week and am very good with my diet and have still gained 12 pounds in the last year. I think it is very personal - because everyone's levels need to be at a certain point - so that makes me think everyone's experiences are UNIQUE. If you exercise and diet and find results that's great! For me - i've been running more than normal and find I am just maintaining (but at +12 my normal). My only saving grace in all of this is telling myself constantly "at least your not gaining more". So that's been my motivation to keep going with my diet and exercise and motivation to figure out my body and what is right for ME.

I encourage you to RESEARCH, and be very involved with your body. Keep journals, don't make excuses and keep going at it. I am in this too - and refuse to let this stupid disease beat me up or let other people tell me its because I don't exercise enough or have no will with eating.

The key is to get your dosage under control. You want it to be perfect, just as if you had no thyroid problem at all. Then you can lose or gain according to what you eat.

If you have too much energy and your hands shake, your dose is too high. If you feel like you're dragging your body around, your dose is too low. It's actually that simple.

But the most important thing to understand is that if your dose is correct, you will have TOTAL CONTROL of your weight. You can eat less and lose, or eat too much and gain.

Weight Loss & Hypothyroidism

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 9 years ago. The effort to stop weight gain is a hugh effort and the effort needed to lose weight is monumental. It's hard to keep your chin up when everyone around you is losing and making comments like you don't move enough,or you have no will power, but don't give up. If you keep working at it, you will lose. I take Armour Thyroid, had to switch to levothyroxine with the shortage, and gained about 20 pounds, so here I go again. Back on Armour now, eating vegetarian, watching portion sizes, and burning a couple hundred calories with Wii Fit Plus everynight.

Well I was diagnosed with a hypothyroid about 3 yrs ago. And they said it was do to hashimoto's disease, which means that my antibodies think that my thyroid is bad so they attack it.. I was on meds for a long time and didn't see any results. So as stupid as it sound I am the type of person that if the meds are not making me feel better I will not take them. I feel that I really did give them a long try. Now I have been off them for about a year and a half , and I just started to gain a lot of weight very rapidly. I work 2 jobs and I have never been the type to watch what I eat too much but I am very active, and very tired all the time. I just and to lose the weight and be able to keep it off. But i don't have a lot of money to do it. Is it any easier if I just have them remove it?

I also have Hashimoto's disease and I know that it sucks! I know it since about 3 years, but probably have it since 15 years and it took me 2 years to find the right medication. And it's absolutely necessary to take the medication if you suffer from Hashimoto's or hypothyroidism!! It's actually not medication in the original sense, cause you just have to subsitute the hormones, the body would normally produce itself. And if you feel tired and gained weight that's a clear sign that you need more thyroid hormones!!
Unfortunately a lot of doctors don't know a lot about Hashimoto's (at least in Germany that is). So go get some information and take care of your health yourself! It's absolutely worth it! A good book is the one from mary shomon (her website is also very good).
I tried to lose weight for ages, but it didn't work until I was on the right thyroid medication. Now I have a totally new life! I'm full of energy, enjoy my work, my relationship and even sport! So go for it! If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask. There are also groups around here for hypothyroidism.

New to hypothyroidism

I'm 13 years old, and the doctor believes I have hypothyroidism. I went to the other doctor today and they took my blood. They said they will probably know in a couple of day. I am very healthy and very discipline in what i eat, but i cannot seem to lose any weight! It's like im gaining now!
What are some things i can do to help. It REALLY bothers me and i would really like to lose before this summer starts or it will be dreadful. Please help

The most important thing is: get your thyroid running properly! Try to forget the weight for some time and focus on your health! That's most important now! If your hormone levels are back in order, the weight will come off easier! Ask your doctor exactly what kind of problems your thyroid is causing and try to understand everything properly. Don't hesitate to aks everything you need to know! And try to stay patient, it might take some time.
And don't hesitate to come here and ask, if you need help with some blood levels or other complicated terms. ;-)

hypothyroid and calcium

I also was diagnosed about 12 years ago, after going back to the Doctor over and over again about how tired I was and how I could not stop gaining weight. I was almost 250 before I was ever diagnosed. Now I am on Jenny Craig and on Armour Thyroid. Recently, my JC consultant discovered I was not eating a morning yogurt serving on my 1500 cal diet, so I added it. Within 2 weeks my skin got so dry that it was chapped, my hair started clogging the drain again, and I could hardly stay awake. I researched to find that Calcium blocks your medication. Be careful to take your vitamins at night and not to eat foods enriched with Calcium within 4 hours of your medication. I mentioned this to my doctor and she agreed that it is very easy to block the medication. Take it exactly as directed. Now, 4 weeks later I am feeling better. I wonder, as you increase your exercise, do you need to be retested? and if we are starting to lose weight do we need to increase our dosage. I walked a 10K in March and am now walking a 5K 4 mornings a week. Taking a pill every day does not seem it would be the same as having the T4/T3 on demand like 'normal' people.

hi, i was checked for hypothyroidism a couple of months ago. the doctor said my levels were in the typical range but having read a lot of your posts and having done som research on my own it seems like i have a lot of the typical symptoms. is it possible for the blood test to be wrong? i'm cold all the time, am generally low energy and my hair comes out at a very abnormal rate. also, i eat very healthy and exercise 5-6 times a week for minimally 35 min. yet cant lose weight. if i slack off at all i gain weight. in not fat but im not thin either. do any of you have and advice or experience that might help?

The normal range is huge (at least in Germany) - so maybe you are in the lower range and that's just not enough for you? Do you have your blood levels (free T3, free T4, TSH)? Did your doctor also check your antibodies? That will check if you have Hashimoto's disease.

I was only diagnosed about a year ago with hypothyroidism. I started taking the meds and decided to start exercising, also. I walk 4 and a half miles a day now and was told to quit taking my medicine. I quit for four weeks, kept walking and got checked again. I was told that I had hyperthyroidism. I decided for my own measure to quit exercising and to be checked again in another 6 weeks and my body was then back to hypo. Exercise plays a huge role in how your thyroid runs, so be careful when you slack off.

I am a 20 year old female with a 1 yr old daughter. I started to gradually gain weight when I was 15 years old (the same time i hit puberty, and no im not a late bloomer I just never ate dairy i was lactose intolerant.) I joined a gym and went whenever i got bored because it was literally maybe 200 ft from my house. So I basically went every day and it took me about a year to lose 10 pounds and I have always eaten healthy because of all my allergies and I like to take care of myself. I noticed after having my daughter I began to feel sick, everyday. I use to be someone that could go to bed for 4-5hrs and have loads of energy but I could sleep all day now and still be tired.

I have a lot of hypo symptoms and even my doctor seems to think its what it is, I have heart palpitations, constipation (constantly), tired all the time, dizzyness, and I have passed a lot over the past 2.5 months. I gained a lot of weight before I got pregnant within a year before. Then I gained another 40 lbs while pregnant and I ate really healthy. I have only lost 7lbs of it in a year and I have tried so hard. I need to feel better so that I can be a better mom. I want to have more energy so I can keep up with my daughter when she starts walking soon. I try to excersise and since giving birth to my daughter I began experiencing dizziniess and severe loss of breath when walking fast, its ridiculous! I use to be so active and able to get up and go do anything and now I get dizzy standing up. I shouldnt feel like this at 20. I cut out breads a lot, and I eat healthy why isnt anything working and will hypo meds help me at all with any of my symptoms? I am afraid to carry my daughter around for fear of passing out...please help me with any info. My great grandma, grandma, and mom all have hypoglycemia and hyperthyroidism. I have hypoglycemia as well. Thank You

Go get your blood levels checked!

That sounds a lot like hypothyroism - so I'd definitely recommend to get your blood levels checked. The interesting values are: TSH, fT3 and fT4. Make sure you read this before your doctors visit, so you could ask the right questions:
Maybe you also want your antibodies to be checked, to see if you have Hashimotos. That's what I have since about 17 years now - it is know for appearing during hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy).
For losing weight it is very important that your thyroid hormone levels are balanced - so go get the levels checked and get on proper medication if necessary.

Have a doctors appt next week

I have been trying to lose weight for over a year now(going to the gym regularly and eating healthy) however i have only lost about 6 pounds. I had my gallbladder out almost two years ago, which may be causing the decrease in weight loss. My dad was diagnosed with hypothyroidism over the summer, and now im thinking i may have it. I am a 21 year old female and despite everything i do, i either gain weight or stay exactly the same weight. Does this sound like i may have this condition? I have going to the doctors next week to have blood tests, but id just like some opinions. Thanks!

I was belatedly diagnosed with hypothyroid. By then, I could only put a few hours of work. I was fatigued and my memory would just go with no notice at all. I have been on 75mg thyroxine, have improved but the weight is remains. I exercise. Will I ever lose weight? Actually, how do I stop it adding up/ and the puffy feeling.. swollen legs etc. It is so frustrating.

I have a mild case of hypothyroidism. My doctor put me on Armour Thyroid because he thought that low T3, was a contributing factor in the severe hypoadrenalism I was also diagnosed with. I dumped the Armour Thyroid and I take supplements instead. New Chapter Broccolive, based on the book "Master your Metabolism" by Jillian Michaels. It is working out better for me, but then, I don't like to be dependent on medicine.

I had hypothyroidism

Yay! I've found a group for us with hypothyroidism! :p Anyways, I'm 16 and I found out I had a sluggish thyroid when I was about 15. Didn't go on meds because my family doesn't believe in Westernized medications, technically. Anyway, I just wanted to share my frustrations with everyone about how hard it is to lose weight because of a sluggish thyroid. I've never been unhealthy: I've always been a vegetarian, I've always been active (playing soccer since I was 2) and never have I been the one who eats a lot of food and yet if I even look at food I gain weight and it doesn't go anywhere! I do weightlifting in school, I go to the gym 6 days a week and yet I still gain weight. Talk about frustrating...
