Storing potatoes?

Any suggestions for an urban dweller on where to store potatoes? Mostly I buy sweet potatoes and baby varietals (not usually "idaho" potatoes). The fridge made them moldy and the counter made them shrivel'y.

TIA

I keep them in cool dark place (kitchen pantry) and try to use them within a week of buying them. Also, I usually buy a couple at a a time. I mostly eat the same kind of potatoes as OP.

With sweet potatoes I microwave the whole potato and eat it over the course of several meals (most of them are pretty big). They are OK refrigerated after they are cooked.

OP here - so by "pantry" do you mean "cabinet" or a closet-type space? and do you put them in something? i read online that the plastic bag i kept them in might've been causing the mold. i googled "storing potatoes" and the few links i checked said "the best place is in a root cellar"... um, seeing as how i don't even have a regular cellar i don't know where to go from there...

Yes, take them out of the plastic bag (anything moist will get soggy if it's in an airtight bag). Put them in a paper bag, or at least open the plastic so they can get air. And then keep them somewhere dark-ish (a pantry or cupboard will work exactly the same - and better than out on the counter in a lot of light.) They should stay good for a week or two, pretty much until the eyes start growing. They shouldn't get shrively or moldy.
