No amount of money is worth the risk of complications and death. If it was just some flu like symptoms maybe but malaria is serious. And how do they know what strain they are infecting patients with? You'd have to be really hard up for money.

I WOULD NOT RISK THIS. I have traveled to Africa many times and seen the affects of this disease. It can be lethal. In the U.S. and other Western nations, it can often be worse because it often doesn't get recognized right away since it's so rare here. Also, since its rare, often the treatment is not available. Note that depending on the strain of malaria, once you get it, it can stay in your system for life. And if you do, hopefully you're in a place where this can get diagnosed and treated quickly. Your medical bills alone will be over $4K for this - skip it!!

"is malaria bad?"

Does a bear shit in the woods? YES, it is not something you'd want to get. Granted it is most common in 3rd world countries and in poverty stricken areas but still if caught here it might go unrecognized since it is so rarely seen here, and it is like hepatitis and it stays in your system for years and years if not perm. so it can rear its nasty head at any time.
