The locker room....
Are you really okay with being undressed in public? I grew up being very active my whole life and am used to locker rooms and sharing showers, etc. No problem with being around nudity or being nude myself.......my issue:
I have just started going to Bikram Yoga (which I LOVE by the way) and the facility is relatively new. They are growing quite fast and have just added a second hot room and building a third. Also, a second ladies locker room to help accommodate everyone! The one there now is pretty tiny. Well everyone changes right there in the open area. No biggie....but WHY do people feel the need to completely get ready nude and then dress. I can understand this if you're at home, I too, do it. But there are women there who will put on makeup, blow dry their hair, have converstaions on their cell phones, all completely nude?! Can't you blow dry your hair with pants and a bra on? shouldn't you have some respect for those around you?
Maybe I'm trippin', but lately I've found it to be quite annoying. I just think you should have respect for others and realize you're in public. Sorry, for venting.....I don't know why this is bothering me so much.

I feel the same as you..I am hagreeing with you in the sense that I say throw something on..I do not walk around nude..need not do that to other people the poor things at the gym need to feel good after there workouts not ill that they just saw my nasty ass walking by...all humor aside, I do feel that I believe in modesty so get changed do your thing no problem but yeah making phone calls..well just not so common in our society,

I feel exactly the way you do. I am far from puritanical, but I do think one should consider the comfort level of others and act accordingly.
Friday, March 07, 2008, 10:18 PM
I write them off as exhibitionists.
Friday, March 07, 2008, 10:23 PM
please.. nakeness is natural.. why be so uptight about it? how does it bother you?
Saturday, March 08, 2008, 9:28 AM
Hairy armpits are natural too. 'Nuff said about natural always being good.

I have been in and out of a lot of locker rooms, as a competitive athlete. Even some mixed-sex locker rooms! To give you some idea of my thinking on the subject, I have been to a few nude beaches in my time, too.
In a women's locker room I will undress all the way -- and shower naked, I've never understood how people feel clean showering in a swimsuit! -- but I do change right into my clothes or wrap right up in my towel. Although it would be MUCH more comfortable to walk around naked while I'm still hot, I know some people aren't emotionally comfortable with that.
Really, it doesn't have to do with exhibitionism -- if you aren't body-conscious, and you are still steaming from your workout, being naked for a few minutes is a lot more convenient and comfortable. If, on the other hand, one is used to thinking of one's body with embarrassment, or wholly in a sexual context, I can see that it might be disturbing. I do try to be polite and accommodate that to some degree.
I have wondered on occasion whether nakedness in the locker room is rebellion or freedom for some women. At one gym I used there was a Muslim woman who worked out at the same time I did -- in very modest robes and headscarf, as is thought proper in areas where there are men. No shorts and T-shirts for her! It looked very hot. But in the locker room she was utterly un-selfconscious about her body.

nothing wrong with hairy armpits either!!! here in europe nakedness is totally natural and even the unfit walk around naked.. its refeshing actually that people just arent hung up about despite what they look like.. perhaps if only the superfit did it.. that would be different... but here .... old, young, fat, thin.... everyone does it... even in the mixed section! ok I'm not a prude in the womens section but I'd rather not mosey on in the mixed section!! although they see that as very natural as well.

10:13am: I completely agree with you. I am often still very hot after my workout and shower. I stay naked for a few minutes (and under a vent) to cool off.
I can't understand why other women get upset about this on this site. We are all women with all the same "parts". I am neither an exhibitionist, nor am I checking out any of the other women for comparisons.
Please lighten up and ignore the women who are "clothing challenged" (ha!) in your locker room. To each her own.

I write off anyone bothered by nudity in a change room as childish.
I can't stand people whining about nudity. Maybe they don't want to get makeup on their clothes? maybe they want their moisturizer to absord into their skin? Obviously, they don't believe in modesty, and in a change room, modesty is ridiculous, immature, and all about being too self conscious.
Saturday, March 08, 2008, 12:44 PM
Thanks for putting me in my prudish little place.
I shall let my armpits grow nice German beards and prance about like a naked nymph because my values, body image issues, concept of normal, etc. are ridiculous and immature according to some faceless exhibitionist on Peertrainer. The error of my ways has been noted.

I could care less how hairy or naked another woman is in the locker room. I don't pay attention to them since I'm busy there and I'm not there to relax and people watch. I'm in there for me, not them and I don't let anyone else bother me during my precious free time at the gym.

I must admit that I wish I was more comfortable with my body and didnt feel the need to hide in the locker room. I usually change in the bathroom b/c I am embarrased about my big BUTT and FlABBY LEGS. I sometimes will change in the locker if I am really pressed for time but I hate doing it. I am not uncomfortable with others being naked in the locker room. Mostly b /c I am more concentrated on hating my own body and how I LOOK. I realize that this is childish but it is real to me. I am working on liking and accepting my body but it not easy. Even though I have lost 40 pounds I still see how far I need to go. Not how far I have come.

ok. just for information: while it is true that people in Europe are far less prudish and can both handle nudity and talk about sex (which might be the reason why our teen pregnancy rates are not quite as high), we actually do shave our armpits and legs. I know that wallowing in stereotypes to feel better about yourself is quite fun at times, but maybe come up with something new?
Saturday, March 08, 2008, 5:58 PM
I used to feel compelled to cover up all the time while in the locker room. I was 60 lbs heavier, and when I went in the steam room I'd sit on a towel and wrap up in a different towel. I considered it just being modest.
Now that I am thinner, I am more comfortable in my own skin. My body feels tighter and when I am in the steam room and sauna, I just like to lay there on my towel naked. I have more confidence, I am comfortable and I still feel modest.
I have seen some women blow dry their hair naked. I can't do that. Gravity already makes my boobs hang wierd. I don't need to hang my head upside down to blowdry and get hit in the face with them!

OP HERE....
Thanks for all comments......it does make me feel a little better knowing that I'm not the only one who feels this way. Just to clarify, I ALSO shower naked and have not problem changing in front of people, or cooling off while I'm hot for a minute or two. I just don't continue to wonder the locker room for the next 20 minutes completely nude. I usually wrap in a towel or throw on pants and my bra. Is it really childish to have respect for others???? Am I childish.......NO. Do I have respect for others who aren't comfortable......YES!

I can't agree with the idea that a little modesty in a locker room is childish or unnatural. I realize that some people will always resort to name-calling rather than actual discussion (on both sides), but it's not much help to simply dismiss everyone with a different point of view as childish.
I don't think of my body only in sexual terms and I'm comfortable in my own skin, as they say. But just as there are limits to what I will reveal about my personal life or feelings to strangers, I have limits with the display of my body. I don't let random strangers read my personal journal or mail; I don't talk about a grief or serious frustration to a woman next to me on the bus; I generally let friends into my family room and bedroom but keep acquaintances in the common areas of the house. I don't have equal intimacy with everyone, whether it's emotional, physical, or mental, and I'm not willing to expose myself equally to everyone in any of those ways.
So, just as there are more personal/private/intimate areas of my home and more personal/private/intimate thoughts in my mind and so on, there are aspects of my physique which I prefer to maintain in some modesty. I'll change in a locker room, but I prefer to cover up within a reasonable amount of time.

If you're curious, Im 26
Did you ever notice all the nudits are OLD...to me I look at it like, wow, keep working out so I dont look like that! (And Im bracing myself for the response)

this is not about whether YOU can get naked or not. of course that is a personal choice. the OP here is uncomfortable with others nakedness. that is what is unreal about this to me. why even bother about it?
things have changed in Europe and most people shave armipts and legs and completely shave pubic areas too. ive never seen hairy armipts in the gym.
Tuesday, March 11, 2008, 7:52 AM
umm, it's a locker room where people shower, change, cool off, and get ready for the rest of their day after they've worked out. You didn't expect to see naked women in there? If you don't like it, find another gym or don't pay attention. Don't like their hairy armpits, don't look at them. Every has a right to do whatever they want, you and them. Go about your business the way you want and leave them to their business the way they want. It's not like their masterbating or having sex in front of you. They're keeping to themselves and not hurting others!

Doesn't bother me one bit, although I don't walk around naked. I am one of those shy women, sort of embarrassed about the extra 30 pounds and don't think anyone else needs to be subjected to it. I actually always admired the women who just bared it all like it was nothing, it seems sort of freeing. My issue is is that even though I am married and love men and am not at all wanting to play on the other side, its hard for me not to check out their bodies. Maybe that a strange thing?
Tuesday, March 11, 2008, 9:34 AM
I heard (or read once) that the reason women are concerned about "panty lines" is not because they are worried about men seeing them. Most women realize other women will notice it! (And we do, don't we?)
I think women are constantly comparing themselves to each other. We check out each others bodies to compare.
I don't think that makes any of us lesbian for doing it.
That could be why for some women the nudity thing is a touchy subject.

"there are aspects of my physique which I prefer to maintain in some modesty," then I certainly hope you never wear a swim suit in public, because besides pubic hair, there's not much that a wet swimsuit really hides- especially in cold water. It sounds much more like a matter of "shame" than modesty.
I'm 26 and I'm a nudie in the changeroom. Perhaps it is usually older women because they've learned what is important, and like many on this thread, aren't bothered by naked women's bodies, and feel that no one should be bothered by naked female bodies in a ladies change room.

I'm grateful that
buildnow gg
you put me in my small, prudish place.
My ideals, body image problems, perception of normal, etc. are all silly and immature, according to some anonymous exhibitionist on Peertrainer, therefore I'll let my armpits grow fine German beards and prance around like a nude nymph. My mistakes have been acknowledged.

that's not my neighbor
It's commendable that you value respect and
That's Not My Neighbor
consideration for others in shared spaces like locker rooms, recognizing the importance of maintaining a comfortable and respectful environment for everyone present.
