Cereals

I eat a bowl of special k every morning with fruit. Are there any lower-calorie options for cereals that you can have more than just one cup and not eat over 250 calories?

7:56 - I agree! I was excited when I bought them b/c they were free of so many things that I was trying to avoid, but then I discovered they were also free of any taste!

Barbara's Puffins cereal ( I like the Cinnamon) is really good and 100 cal for 2/3c. I actually really like it with unsweetend almond milk (only 40 calories a cup). So if you wanted a double portion it would be just a little bit more than 250.

Also Rice Krispy Cereal is really good. I think 1 1/4c. for 110 Calories.

1/4 cup steel cut oats prepared yields about 1/2 cup to 1 cup...but is VERY filling.

1/4 cup (unprepared) is 140 (ish) calories.

All Bran Yogurt Bites has 190 cals (dry) and 230 w/skim milk in 1.25 cups; plus it has 10 g of fiber.

Depending on what your restrictons are, I've been doing the following:

tasteless low-cal good-for-me cereal (lately, it's been cheerios, but whatev...), mixed with a carton of Dannon Light'n Fit yogurt (which is 60 cals) in a fruit flavor, such as strawberry or blueberry. Adds a lot of flavor. I was doing it with vanilla before, but it got bland fast.

I've been doing a cup and a half of cheerios w/ a container of yogurt for 210 cals.

Crap crap crap. Rice puffs and corn flakes are all processed junk. I don't care who is on the box and how many vitamins, it is BAD for you. It spikes your blood sugar and then goes straight to your gut. Many have hydrogenated oils.

The poster above is right. There is NO substitute for whole steal cut oats in the morning. They are low glycemic and very very good for you. Add some cinnamon and a banana and you are golden. If you throw berries on it, and add a low fat protein like a couple of hard boiled egg whites, there is probably no better breakfast for you in the world.

Its not all about calories. Its about the right kind of calories I will take 400 cals of oats over 200 cals of processed flakes any day of the week and I will still come out thinner in the end.

That is all true pp, but the OP simply asked a question about cereals, and to help people change habits it helps to inspire and inform - otherwise people just get put on the defensive and you end up preaching to the choir! Enjoy them steel cut oats!

4:01 you are right. I just read posts like these and I get so angry with the FDA for not teaching people better eating habits. America is so misinformed about eating the right foods. This was not intended to offend the OP.

Believe me (I'm 4:01) I get fired up, too. Have you read In Defense of Food? You might like it!

1:22 - are you American? If so, I think you can buy them at Whole Foods...maybe Trader Joes (not sure if this is the correct name of the store). I am a Canadian, so I'm not 100% sure.
