Sugar, Carbs, Blood Sugar, Insulin Resistance

I found this site which I think has great information about controlling blood sugar levels and also about how carbs affect us.

If you are a woman with a and your waist to hip ratio is over .8 or a man with a ratio over 1, then you might be particularly interested in this site. To find this ratio, measure you waist then divide by the measure of your hips. For me--my waist is 36" and my hips are 44". So 36 divided by 44 equals .81. One of my goals is to lower this ratio by reducing my carbs and eliminating simple sugars. Sometimes I can't use the scale for a measure of progress.

Your best bet is to get a blood glucose monitor and strips and keep track of how your body handles foods, so you know exactly how your body is doing.

Since when is linking to a site spam??? That site doesn't sell stuff. It's a great site with tonnes of *ACCURATE* information about blood sugar levels. I'm NOT the OP, but I've spent hours perusing that site.

I'm still challenging PT to actually test their so-called 'slow carb' theory, by checking their own blood sugars.

Atkins is not nor has never been a 'high protein diet'. To call it such is ignorant. It is a high fat diet. South beach, Atkins, etc, tend to suggest about a 30% protein diet; that is not considered 'high protein' even if it is more protein than some people eat.

Eating lots of green veggies leads to less cravings? Well of course- because then you're usually eating less sugar, and it's the elimination of sugar that tends to alleviate cravings. Although, eating lots of FAT- *absent sugar* also eliminates cravings (eating fat and sugar won't help eliminate cravings)

The vast majority of the research saying 'eliminate meat' has either not considered the quality of the meat (cheap bologne vs. grass fed bison) or that the meat has typically been consumed in addition to a high carb/high sugar diet.

I follow a low(er) carb diet. My diet is about 95% grain and sugar free. I don't eat beans or lentils, rarely eat potatoes (sweet potatoes maybe 5 times a month). *EVERY* meal has either meat, whey protein, or eggs (occasionally breakfast is just coffee with heavy cream). Every time I go see my doctor, I get asked by health professionals several times 'are you on any medications' and they never seem to believe me when I say no. None. Nadda.

One can still eat meat, and lots of it, and be in perfect health.

PS- your body does NOT need to take in glucose. It doesn't. Your body can make glucose. It's a simple metabolic pathway of gluconeogenesis.

Fuhrman is a GP who's studies other people's studies. He's still not an endocrinologist, and certainly doesn't seem to pay enough attention to the basic biochemistry in which they specialize.

here is another argument for "less meat" from a Better Homes and Gardens site- not exactly a hotbed of angry vegan propoganda:
