How much do you weigh? How much do you wish you weighed?

I thought about this this morning. I weigh 141. I wish I weighed 125. Not really because I know what 125 looks like, I've almost picked out the number in an arbitrary way. I think I should reevaluate.

Arbitrary numbers

I weigh 125 right now and have always wanted to weigh 115. I don't really know why I picked 115. Afterall, it's just a number. It doesn't tell me how fit or happy I am so I'm really not sure why it's significant. Maybe it's just the idea of a goal weight that's supposed to motivate us?

I am the 11:21 poster. Thank you . I have been doing the South Beach diet, which was recommended to me by my doctor . I love it . It really is working for me. Also added excersise. I walk everyday either on my treadmill or outdoors. My husband and I are looking into joining a gym. Peer Trainer is great , I feel like I am not alone and it just adds to my motivation.

if you're above 5 feet tall: start at 100 lbs and for every inch over 5', multiply that by 5 lbs. ex, 5'4" 4x5 = 20
therefore a "good" weight for me would be 120.
however, i don't know if i can maintain a weight this low. i'm usually in the 150s.

to the poster above-i've seen that formula above before but most doctors and nutritionist today allow for a bit more of a range of weight. that formula can't account for muscle or frame size.

Goal- Considering I have never been below 150 as an adult, I am not sure what to put. The last time I weighed below 150 consistantly I was 11 years old. I am thinking a good number will be somewhere between 135 and 140. Most importantly, I need to tone up my flabby parts!

Re: last poster's calculation- where did this come from? This "good" weight calculation seems off to me. According to this, my "good" weight would be 105 lbs (currently 120). I know from experience that 105 looks very sickly on me. I could weigh this "good" weight, but I wouldn't be able to have any muscles and that would mean I couldn't do half the fun stuff I do! Plus I think muscles look good on girls.

I say don't worry about the numbers, rather pay attention to how you want your body to look, and how you feel!

It doesn't seem like much is happening until I break it down into the measurements on each of the last 5 months!

Jan 1 - 178.2 lbs - 38% body fat
Feb 1 - 175.0 - 38% body fat
March 1 - 173.5 - 37.25% body fat (Avg. Weekly)
April 1 - 173.0 - 35.83% body fat (Avg. weekly)
May 1 - 172.94 - 36.19% body fat (Avg. weekly)

Today is officially 127 days since I started my fitness log in earnest....
By my calculations, I'm currently losing about 0.056 lbs per day which means I'm burning about 200 extra calories a day....

Very interesting... Unfortunately If I want to meet a goal weight of 150 lbs, that means that at my current pace it will take me about a year to lose 20 lbs!

So... I'm going to try to up my calorie deficit to see if I can burn it off more quickly! (of course, this goal weight does not take into consideration muscle mass vs. fat...)

20 lbs in a year is not bad! I know to younger people (I'm guessing) that seems like a long time, but that year will go by all too fast. And if you lose the weight slowly and gradually, you get several benefits:
a) fewer stretch marks (trust me this will be an issue!)
b) fully established habits
c) easier-to-maintain-your-whole-life habits

Also, to the 5'10" wanna-be-120 and other ambitious posters -- do a BMI calculator for a reality check. eg, the recommendation for 5'10" is at least 132 to not be "underweight". Let's try to aim for healthy, not skeletal! After all, we all basically just want to look like Claudia Schiffer, right? Well, considering that's not going to happen no matter what we lose, then let's try to have the strongest healthiest bodies we can. Then we can at least kick Claudia's butt in a bar fight. :)

that's interesting -- what happened? Do you think it might be a thyroid problem that caused your weight gain? (a friend had this happen, caused sudden weight gain)

Good for you for winning the battle! Maybe you can give us some perspective from both sides -- how have things changed with your diff weights? Can you tell if people treat you differently? And how have you lost the weight so far?

UPSET!

Everyone talks about being 125 at the age of 15 being too big but I think that less then 125 is too small but that's just me. I weigh 125 and I've been called anorexic, a crack *****, and everything else. I used to have scoliosis and when I would show my friends my back or went to the beach with them they would say I look disgusting with bones sticking out everywhere. I'm 5'6 and don't have perfect posture or weight but I like how much I weigh and I'm upset at how much everyone thinks they need to weigh at most a little over a 100 pounds. Feel free to do whatever you want but it's just my 2 cents that I just wanted to put in. Sorry if anyone got offended or anything but it's just my opinion. You know what's really sad is that I got remembering what I've been called and how I look right now and I'm letting the tears flow.It upsets me that much and please don't tell me to not read this stuff if it upsets me because I like reading how people support eachother. And last but not least I would like to congratulate all the people on their amazing weight losses and would like to tell the people that are trying to lose weight to keep up the good work. It may be a tough long road but you'll get there!

It's funny. When I first went on a diet at the age of 15, 125 was skinny for me. That wasn't good enough, though. I finally got to 115. Unfortunately, I had to eat virtually nothing to maintain that weight. Since then, in the past 20 years, my weight has yo-yod from 160 to 117 to 160 and on and on. Last year at this time I weight 120. In my head, I wanted to be thinner. Now, I kick myself for thinking that. I'm back up to 160 and miserable. I hope to learn how to be healthy and fit. For me, I guess moderation is the key.

'perfect' weight...

I also thought I was terribly overweight when I weighed 140, my highest was 225.5!
At about 218 I bought my first two-piece bathing suit, and I felt fabulous in it... It took that bout of confidence to get me working on me.

I'm now down to 185 as of this morning, and I hope to get to 135, but I'd be pretty excited to get back to 145. :)

Also, it may help you to 'picture' what you want to weigh. I don't want to spam, so hopefully no one will be offended, but I attached a link that lets you account for skin tone, body type, and even eyes to 'see' yourself at a weight. (It will also monitor where you are and where you're going)... I think it's helpful to visualize a solid goal for myself. Hope this is helpful!

I've been at 159 for a few weeks now, however, since I've been lifting and working out 6x/week instead of 3x/week, my jeans are falling off of me and I can see a noticable difference in my stomach and overall body, so I think weight isn't a good judge of progress. I know I've lost inches, but I haven't lost a pound in a while.

weight vs size

I agree with earlier posters that weight is not an accurate measurement for women with a lot of muscle. I am pretty muscular, 5'2 and 155-160 lbs. That makes my BMI around 30 and that states I am overweight. I wear a size 10 pants. I don't look overweight. I go by how my clothes fit and an old fashioned tape measurer.

High 164 (beginning of last summer, after the freshman 15, went on WW)
Low 150 (End of last summer)
Now 155 (back on WW and joined PT)
Goal 125

This is partly arbitrary, partly based on BMI it would put me at 21.5 (I'm only 20, but I can't remember the last time I was 125, early adolescence, I guess). I am busty but I have a small frame. If I never reach 125 (might be to light for me when I get there) I'll still be happy, as long as I am healthier. I had a cholesterol check done as part of my health class at university. While it was still in the normal range it was awful close to borderline high. At 18, that wasn't something I wanted to hear. Ultimately, I want to be able to do the things I love, hiking, skiing all day and I want to participate in the very active lifestyle at my university. And I want to never have to worry about that cholesterol!

After medical clearance from your health care provider begin small. Are you drinking sugared beverages? Switch to something sugar free. Add a small salad at lunch and dinner to curb your appetite. If you aren't doing much at this point to lose weight small changes will have a noticable effect. Start walking, up one flight of stairs at first and then around the block. Increases in exercise will show up as weight loss too. Soon you'll need to do more to lose weight but you'll be hooked by the boost to your self-confidence.Don't look at it as dieting.this is the way you need to eat for the rest of your life. SUre, you'll still go to birthday parties, eat your mothers' rum cake at Christmas, but you'll be happy with just one slice on special occasions.

I would also suggest journaling. At times when you feel happy, sad, frustrated. Emotions are energy and often eating is a way to self-medicate when we feel bad. Get in touch with how you feel and change the way you respond to that. When I'm feeling anxious, nervous, depressed I have found that just walking or doing anything that raises my heart rate will shift my mood. Nothing unusual about that, ask around.

Most of all, surround yourself with supportive people. You have that here. Good luck!

I am 5'11" I weigh 157. I like the way I look but I want to tone about 2 inches around my hips. Inches matter more to me and body fat. Scales don't take into account the ratio of muscle to fat so we could be a lot more fit than we think!

I'm 5'2" and now discouraged by this thread!!

Wow, I thought I was doing pretty well til I read through this. Some of the other 5"2"s are striving for the 115's, I just wanna be around 125... maybe I need to re-think that? My heaviest weight, 230. Now 133 and I think I look damn good and so do my husband and his friends! LOL! I would ideally like to be down to 125 and thought that would be a good weight but now I'm scared after reading this thread that I have a lot further to go than I thought I did! I guess I'll just keep going until I feel great about it all! I also workout a lot and have built a lot of muscle so I'm trying more to go more by how the clothes fit and the tape measure and forget about that damn scale!! I hate that thing (oh yeah, except when I see a loss!!) :0)

Friday, December 07, 2007, 5:37 PM

To the previous poster, don't change your goal just because someone else weighs less. We are our own worst critics. If you think you look great, I'll bet you do! You bring up a great point about muscle. The scales are a lousy way of measuring towards the end. It becomes a question of % body fat, and even there, less body fat can make your face look "hard" rather than sexy.

But I'm considering not following my own advice. I'm 5'5", 120 lbs, 26% body fat right now. My weight stays relatively stable, but my body fat flips around all over, depending on how much exercise I am getting in (not enough right now). I think it would be far easier to lose a little more weight than keep up hours of exercise to build more muscle. The issue for me is that my fat is no longer marbled in my flesh as it was in youth, but sits in "unpretty" deposits at various places. Thinking of aiming for 115...

5:37, who cares what others want to weigh? I'm 5'6, and my goal wieght is 160. Currently, I'm 191lbs, but no one ever believes me when I say that. They *assume* I weigh 160. You might carry your weight well, you might have denser bones and more muscle than others.

Some of those 5'2 people might have a lower lean body mass than you, or they might not realise they'd have to lose lean mass to get to their ideal weight and be healthy. Or some might have unrealistic goals about how they want or expect their body to look.

If you're happy with how you look, if your husband is happy with how you look, then don't take someone else's goals. That 10lb dif between 115 & 125 is not a health issue, it's a vanity issue, so do what makes you happy. (Especially since you and your doc are the only ones who will ever know what the scale says anyways.)

This is an interesting question. I started in the 160's and hovered aroud there for years. Since September I have lost 13 pounds- am now at 147, and am 5'8". My goal when I started was to get to 145, and now that I am very close I have revised it to 135. I guess I know how I want my body to look and it doesn't look that way yet. The numbers are just something more concrete that I can use to motivate me to keep trying harder at the gym- to give me more muscle- make me feel more powerful! I am happier about the way I look, am more confident too, but it is definately hard to get used to thinking this way. Being happier about the way I look is a relatively NEW idea. I think that is the interesting thing about this thread. It seems like a matter of retraining our minds to start seeing what we have accomplished. Maybe it is part my over-judgmental self that wants me to get to 135. Maybe I should be very happy with being what I am. Or maybe I should push it get the big muscles and forget about the scale!!!

The lowest I ever got to was 148 back in 2004 and I thought I could lose 10 more pounds. But looking back at pictures, I looked good and healthy. So I really think it just depends on your body type. I have a really long toreso, so there's no way I'll ever weigh like 130. Nor will I ever be a size 6. I hate it when I see those super tall models on TV who are like 120. They look sick to me, with their hip bones all protruding out. GROSS! According to most books I've read, the range for our height is 145-175.

Frame matters

I weigh probably close to 150 since it's after the holidays. I would like to be 137lbs and have been that before. I am 5 ft 6 with a medium frame. There is a good guideline in dr phil's weight loss book that takes into account your frame and body type. It's a bit more realistic than how I find some guidelines.

goal weight

Hi. I am also 5'4" and I weigh 126. I need to loose only 6 more pounds to get to my goal weight of 120. These are the hardest pounds to loose. I'm not sure how many calories I need a day to loose these measly 6 pounds. Any ideas? I am a 37 year old female.

I'm almost 5'10" so I looked my best at 145. 164 - not so good.

I currently weigh 148, I've flirted with 145 (but not quite) recently, but just can't seem to grab it. I'm 5'4", I'm 54 yrs old - I want to get to 135 but that seems really ... like a dream at this point, my metabolism is so stubborn lately.

Good thread!

I weight 196... I wish I weighed 150... I weighed 145 three years ago and I wish I had kept up with my "lifestyle change" so I wouldn't be in this boat today... but that's why I'm here!

I weight 189; I just started my journey yesterday. I wish I weighed 150. That would get my BMI in the 'normal' range instead of 'overweight. Also, it would be so much healthier and fun to be that weight.

Goal weight

I weigh 140.5 now; two years ago I did a slimfast challenge and got down to 123--obviously I've gained it all back! :( I would like to get down to that again, but I'm doing things different this time, like lifting weights--didn't do that before...so maybe 123 will be a bit smaller with more muscle/less fat.
Once I get to 123 I will have to reevaluate I suppose...

I'm not so sure that the total number of lbs I weigh is really all that important. Neither is the size printed on the tags in my clothes. What's important to me is that I get fit and generally height/weight proportionate. Ideally with no flab, sag or bag. But we'll see how that goes. The older you get, the more your skin tends to head south.

realistic

I weigh 179, I would like to weigh 155. My "ideal" weight in my 20s was 115, my "ideal" weight before kids was 125. I think I looked the best I ever have in my whole life when I weighed 135, but I know that if I can get down to 155, I will feel so much better than I do now, and that will boost my selfesteem and attitude greatly.

I'm 145 pounds. I want to be 115 pounds. Once I get to 140 pounds though, I will be considered at my normal weight for my bmi score, which will be awesome!

Confidence

Everyone pays a different price for confidence...some of us want to pay 50 pounds and others that last 5. Too bad we can't be confident at any size...darn cosmo and vogue.

Was: 243.5 lbs
Now: 228.1 lbs
Want: 175 lbs (where i last felt confident)

Hi! I'm just getting started. I gained weight after some health challenges surfaced- along with several I already had.
Currently I weigh - 173
I want to weigh - 138 to 145

Before I got sick, I weighed around 140 and that is about where I've felt my best. I look anorexic below 135. I have a muscular build and I am 5'6" , so I think 138 - 145 is a healthy goal for me.
