Don't say what you are going to do, wait 3 days and tell what you did

Over the few years I've been here, one thing I consistently see is people saying what they are going to do, the big change, the "tomorrow I'm going to start doing this" announcement. This is just me, but I try never to tell what I am planning to do. I wait until I've done it 3 days then announce what I've been doing. I do this for 2 reasons:
1. We have all been exasperated at our selves and in a moment of fury, we decide enough is enough and announce our great new decision. Then when we fail on days 1 and 2, we are disappointed that once again we have failed our newest decision to turn our lives around. Then we are depressed and give up. Having announced it and then failed only adds to the depression.
2. We all like to post positive things we have done. Everybody likes a pat on the back to help keep us motivated. Making a plan is great and I highly recommend it. But if you make a decision to wait until you have done something for 3 days, you hold that carrot in front of you. You know you want that pat on the back and it gives you a reason to push through those first 3 days cause you know you will be able to post then and get that pat on the back. I'm serious when I say we all want that pat on the back. If you post what you are going to do, you get the "good for you" pat on the back and the original excitement is gone. If you decide to wait until you have successfully completed 3 days, you have something to look forward to, a pat on the back for an accomplishment instead of just words.

Anyway, that's my thought. The only thing I am positive of is my ability to be wrong, so don't hesitate to disagree. Listening to different views is the best way to learn.

Sometimes though, just telling people what I'm going to makes me stick to that when I don't really feel like it.

Love the feedback. I just see so many startovers that never get past day one. But if it works for you, go for it.

Lynn: I'm going to one up Nike.
"Already did it" is my motto. Goes w/ my wait 3 days philosophy.
I just don't get motivated by telling people what I'm going to do. I'd rather get congrats for what I did do. Just my way though.
