Sore nipples

My nipples are so sore that even putting on a bra is hurting me. I'm not on any kind of hormones nor am I taking any kind of meds. Any ideas? They seem to be very sensitive all of a sudden. OUCH!!!

I"ve never experienced it, but I remember reading that some people experience soreness shortly before or during their period. Maybe that's the problem? You might try calling a nurse hotline and asking.

Are you SURE you aren't pregnant? That is one of the first things most women notice.

On a whole different continum: If you're exercising more, your bra might be irritating your nipples and causing too much friction. Try different ones for a few days.

This happened to me when I got off Depo-Provera and again when I got off the patch. It possibly is hormones and seems to be related to increased amounts of estrogen. And it is a classic sign of pregnancy - my doctor tested me several times since it took months for it to subside.

Yeah I too have this. Has a lot to do with birth control I think. I'm for sure not pregnant either.

Are you doing any kind of high-impact exercise that might cause rubbing against the fabric of your bra or shirt or whatever? That could cause heightened sensitivity & soreness (it's a problem some runners have).

Hi, I'm the OP. I'm sure I'm not pregnant but I have been playing tennis lately for hours at a time and sweating a lot. This could be it. Everyone has me nervous about the pregnancy thing. I have a home pregnancy test, I'll do it in the morning. Otherwise, I will try a different bra.

I dont think it has anything to do with someone's bra personally. I often workout without a bra or frankly anything on. I think its more of a time of the month kinda thing. Additionally if your husband/bf gets a bit to rough you can feel it a few days after it occurs.

I used to have this happen to me and it was hormones. I started taking evening primrose and it went away.

If you're playing tennis alot, try buying some "bodyglide" and "lubricating" the nipples with it. It will reduced the chafing and friction and should help to stop it from being as irritated.

Another thing is a green box of what's called "bag balm" used on cow's udders & teats to relieve irritation and cracked nipples... It's kind of like a rather thick grease, but it contains an antiseptic ointment. I use it in the wintertime on cracked fingers (from doing ceramics and the dryness of the cold weather.) You could probably put it at night so that it doesn't get too greasy and it should help!

Thanks, sometimes my breast feel like a cow's udders so I will consider this. My hubby thinks it's my cycle about to start. I think it's a combo of everything: hormonal changes (I'm 38-maybe perimenopause), time for my period (1 week away) and my husband's loving. I just know that this hasn't happened before.

if the lube doesn't work try putting a bandaid over your nipples. I used to do a lot of running and this was the only thing that worked for me. The med square patches work best (like knuckle or finger tip size) because they are less likely to rub off when you sweat.

if the lubes posted aboove dont work try PureLanolin for breast feeding mothers. Works wonders for sore cracked nipples.

I had this & went to the doc. My hormones were in the normal range. I had finished breastfeeding my baby a year before this happened, but my good friend was pregnant & I wanted to have another (husband didn't) so I had like a "false pregnancy." I got to the point where I started lactating again. My doc said he could put me on male hormones to combat this (no thanks). I asked if it was dangerous to my health in any way & he said no, so I just let it run its course & eventually I returned to normal. It's amazing what the mind can do!

very interesting! I know you said it was cycle related, but I just want to add that you should make sure you have a fresh clean bra. I know that for me my skin gets really irritated if I wear a bra that is sweaty.

I have this problem whenever it is cold (started when I got pregnant with my first). I solve the dilemma by wearing a regular bra (super supportive) and then wear a compression type exercise bra on top. You would think you would be smooshed, but that doesn't happen. It also reduces the jiggles. But it saves me from the "nippie" cold (even if that is just the morning cool. I am pretty sensitive there!).

Mine have been particularly sore recently also but have just restarted on Yasmin contraceptive pill after a long time off. I'm hoping it's just a hormone imbalance, but all this talk of pregnancy is very concerning! Not a chance but I feel like I should be off down the chemist just to be sure!

I squeezed my left nipple really hard and this goo like substance came out, i freaked and thought it was milk, went down and got a preg test and it was negative - Im still worried though! tell me its just hormones!

I am convinced after taking a pregnancy test today (negative) and reading this stream of posts that the reason my nipples have been sore is because I recently stopped the Nuva Ring (Birth Control)... Hormones...

Just one of my nipples is sore - its actually been sore for a couple days now - no sex. no birth control and just got off the ol' period about Thursday of last week; but the thing (my nipple) is actually all tight - it won't relax - I think thats what is causing the pain, but what is causing its constant pencil eraser status? And just one breast? Any ideas ladies?

my nipples have been sore for the past week almost. i have got the implant which is a form of contraception which is 99.9% affective so theres a little chance of me being pregnant and i hardly have periods due to the implant so it cant be due to an oncoming period. why are they sore? is it just my body changing?

I feel flushed and am cramping slightly and my nipples are sore (the left one more than the right), I am having mild headaches. This has een going on for 4 days now. I am not due to start my period for another 12 days. My last cylcle starting on the 17th and is always regualr. I got off birth control almost 8 months ago.. Could my body just be reacting to a new hormonal change? I feel as if i was not ovulating for the last 8 or so months and I know for sure i am ovulating this week, i have the mucos stuff.... I doubt I am pregnant. we have tried for a baby and gave up due to the fact that it devestated me every month I would get my period. Could this all be in my mind? I mean really? Can you give yourself all these symptoms at once, without thinking about them? Someone help!

SORE NIPPLES and mastitis, I have had it all. Nursed all my children, stopped nursing 3 years ago, and still am lactating. Crazy.

Your nipple can easily get injured. Extreme cold temps (yes I know someone who got frost bite there), bad bras, sweat and exercize, tough loving, baby teething...Just to name a few. Tender nipples result, and sometimes always seem erect, even under your bra.

Hormone changes can make the entire breast tender.

There are other issues most women don't talk about. Infections. Mastitis is hard to miss, but it masks itself like the flu along with nipple and breast pain. You can get an infected or clogged duct in the gland. It feels like a soft round lump that can be manipulated or moved. Sometimes you can see a red inflamation of the blood vessels in a certain area of the breast.

Fibrous tissue in the breast also can create breast pain. Those people who are prone to fibrous tissue (lumps) have to keep up with their self exams. My sister had to have some removed because it would cause pain.

I have found that my GYN doesn't have time to really talk about these issues. Now I have a woman GP and she is more eager to talk about my female concerns. The best consultant about breast issues was the lactation specialist at the local hospital. She seemed to know the answer to everything and didn't make me feel rushed. She even had a list of homeopic remedies to help sore nipples.

Ladies- If you have any concern about the health of your breast or nipples, call your dr., or call the local hospital and ask for a lactation nurse. At least someone who knows more can give you advise and guidance.

People just tell us to wear a bra when we run and get a mamogram after 40. That is not BREAST HEALTH! That directive came from a man, one who will never leak from the breast when a baby cries!

You're most likely just chaffing your nipples. Try putting some vaseline at night before bed...and try a different sports bra. I use Shock Absorber. I got them from HBC...not sure if they have that store where you live.

www.shockabsorber.co.uk/

Link to official website...this bra is the best thing that I've ever bought. I will NEVER buy anything but this type.

I hope that you'll be able to find them near you.

**they're not the type of bra that you'd want your new boyfriend to see though...not the sexiest thing ever but they work!

ANOTHER NUVARING EX-USER with SORE NIPPLES

Glad I found this thread. I also just got off the Nuvaring--three weeks ago, about to have my period I guess, and my nipples have been extremely sensitive and sore for at least a week! I'm 31, been on contraceptives of some kind since 18, and I've never had this as a premenstrual symptom before now, so I wonder if this is temporary until I adjust to being free of extra hormones. I have had premenstrual breast tenderness but this is so very different and very "point" specific to the nipple. FYI, I had to get off the ring after 4 months of excruciating lower back pain that lasted for days and days. Never felt anything like that before. I hobbled around like an arthritic elderly woman, and 4 months was long enough to try to acclimate.

My nipples are soo sore (just my nipples not my whole breast) im nauseas, exhausted, and super irritable and emotional plus i have heart burn. Im not due to get my period for another three days, but I took a 5 day early pregnancy test and it came out negative. Could it still be too early if I only got pregnant 10 or 11 days ago? I know they say you can get a false negative if you take it any time before fourteen days after conception, is this true even if your period is due within the next few days?

2:17 - that is true. Some women will have enough of the pregnancy hormone to get a positive result before their period would've come, others won't see a positive untili that 14 days or later. Hope you get the result you want!

HELP!

I take my birth control exactly the same time every day. I never miss one EVER. I hardly have sex, and the birth control has made me have no periods. But my breasts and nipples have been starting to hurt lately. I took a pt but it came back negative. I feel more like my body needs a period. Does anyone think this is just hormonal? I need help!

Sore nipples too

've been searching for a reason why my nipples are sore today. They usually aren't so. I recently stopped taking my pills because I messed up and missed too many in a row...I decided to wait for my next cycle and start that Sunday. I have been on the pill for 7 years. I am a little nervous that I may be pregnant but I don't want to jump to conclusions. I have lost track of time so I am not sure when I am supposed to get it. I think it may be this week. What do you think? Am I pregnant? Am I PMS'ing, or is my period delayed because I stopped the pill this month? Anybody????

I have been experiencing the same problem. I am not on any birth control and havent been having any sex lately. I do have a son that is 15 months today, so I thought maybe it is a hormonal imbalance. It is so sensitive to the touch and hurts bad even when water runs across it. Can anyone give any suggestions?

I hate being female

I am 23 years old. I am not on birth control and I am not pregnant nor have I had any children. About a week before my periods my breasts become so sore it hurts to move at all. Putting a bra on is a diffrent story, it brings tears to my eyes. I've told my PCP and my GYN this and they both have no idea why they hurt so bad. I am on a completely normal cycle so my hormone levels are fine. The only thing I can come up with is I am on thyroid meds and your thyroid gland can mess with your levels. So maybe its just my meds affecting me? Even though my levels are normal. We have tried birth control in the past to see if it helps, we've tried a few diffrent kinds with diffrent supplements and stuff, and NOTHING works. Its horrible. Im so young, I would HATE to have this until menopause. Does anyone have any idea's for anything I can put on them to make them feel better?

Caffeine is the culprit!

At one point it was so bad for me that 10 days before my period I couldn't even sleep with a sheet. My nurse practitioner told me it was probably too much caffeine. I was in grad school at the time and drinking a ton of coffee, tea and diet coke. I went off the caffeine (was total hell for 2 weeks) but they quit hurting. Now I'm back to coffee....

extremely sore breasts and nipples...almost ALL the tme!!! HELP!!!

Hi everyone =) My name is Bridget and I'm 22 years old, I was on the pill for 3 years or so and stopped taking it about a year ago. I'm not sure how long I've been experiencing this problem,(so I'm not sure if I've always had this problem and the pill helped, or if this just started recently) but for a long time now, both my breasts and nipples, have been extremely sore. I have my good days and bad but it seems to be constant. Sometimes they are just sore to the touch, sometimes they hurt so bad I can feel the pain throbbing without even touching them. They hurt just by something brushing against them, getting changed, laying down, etc. Even a gentle touch is bothersome to the point where I hardly even let my boyfriend touch them.(which he doesn't like very much lol but he understands) It does seem to be a little worse before and during my period and I've also noticed a small ?bump? that almost feels like a ball that I can grab and move around, about the size of a peanut, at the edge of my right breast near my armpit. Sometimes, especially around my period it gets sore and seems to swell a little bit. I went to the gynecologist and she said it was normal just a "ridge" that I'll be able to feel more around my period, that it's no big deal, not to worry about it...although, she didn't look to interested in helping me out! =( So I'm not sure if that can be a problem..I also take pain medication, because I recently hurt my lower back which causes constant pain that is terrible so I was wondering if maybe the pills or pain may be a factor??(just in case u were wondering I didn't get hurt by falling or a way I could have injured my chest...if that's possible lol) I also love coffee but I get my lazy days where I don't want to make it and they still hurt the same wether I drink it or not. I've never been pregnant and I'm pretty sure I'm not, is there any advice you guys can give me??? I greatly appreciate it and sorry it's so0o0o0oo long lol btw great thread!! I can't beleive how many women are having the same problem as me, and I also can't beleive this thread was started over 2 years ago!! Hopefully someone can help me out!! Thanks in adavnce and have a great day!!! =)

I'm sure it'll come in the next couple days. If it's off by a couple days, no big deal. Periods can be irregular. In fact, 2 years ago, when I was 20, for several months, my period suddenly became very irregular and when I had my first gyno appointment, she told me it's nothing...just something about how I'm not ovulating or whatever. Then, it got back to normal. If you're really worried and your period doesn't come, then see your doctor...and I'm sure you can talk to your mom or friends, right? Embarrassing, but they may tell you they've had the same problem.

Sore nipples also.

I am 23 and a fresh newly wed. I just came off my period about a week ago. And for the past 3 days my nipples have been sore. I've read that some have this feeling before their period and I've never felt this. I didn't know if it was common to have it before your period or does it matter? I don't think I am pregnant. Because it's not possible to have your period and still be pregnant, right? Just very unsure. Haven't been able to go to the doctor yet....but had access to the net and seen this blog....any ideas?

RE: sore nipples also...

it is very very common for you boobs and nipples to be sore before your period. it just depends on the extent of the pain...

i have NEVER had a week before my period where they didnt hurt. but yesss. it is possible to be pregnant and still have your period.

my mom and one of her friends and both of my aunts all had their periods for atleast 4 months into their pregnancy it is quite common but a lot of people dont know about it.

sometimes if you are pregnant it might be a day or two late and it starts about normal flow and then a VERY VERY light flow. and you get sickness right away. and its not just morning, more like all day sickness. and you cramp a lot lol.

hope i was some help. good luck and congrats on ur marriage!!!! :D

re: CONDOMS

Hi, Yes, when your boyfriend gets aroused, he gets wet, just like you do, and the pre-ejacluation that comes out even before you have sex--- contains sperm, when he is having sex with you---he pre-ejaculates, and you can get pregnant from that,...so putting on the condom at the last minute before blast off is in fact, TOO LATE. I hope this helps..

About one month ago my doc put my on low dosage hormones to regulate me. And hofully trigure ovulation. I *think* I ovulated. So we had sex and now one week after*ovulation* my nipples are sore and a little something came out when I squeeze my nipple. I have NEVER experienced sore breasts or nipples and I am 27 years old. What do y'all think? I should start my period in the next 5 or 6 days.

Breast/Nipple Pain

Please, Please stop squeezing your nipples to see if they are oozing. If they are cracked and swollen to that extent, you need to see a doctor. The skin of the breast and nipple is very sensitive and you will do more harm than good by applying harsh and unnecessary pressure. If you're not pregnant and lactating which would justify a discharge then please let your doctor do this if it is even necessary.

First rule of thumb is don't panic. The Internet gives us free reign to research and we have plenty of qualified doctors at our disposal to see once we have armed ourselves with information.

If you are still of menstruation age and you are not pregnant, you most likely have sore nipples and/or breast due to ovulation or PMS. It's VERY common. It may be monthly or sporadic. It can also happen to post-menopausal women as well, though probably not as frequently. There are of course other health issues that can cause breast and nipple pain, so you have to look at other symptoms to get an idea of what is happening with your body and whether or not it warrants a visit to the doctor.

See some of these resources below maybe they will be helpful. Google is a good resource, try looking up more info at some medical reference sites. The Mayo Clinic website is the most informative as it outlines the two distinct types of breast pain and their causes, symptoms, treatment, etc.

Sore nipples? Me too!!

I too am suffering from severe sore nipples that is why I was trying to find out the problem. I just got off of the Nuva Ring so I guess that is what is causing it. Good to know that more than likely, I am not pregnant. I am glad that so many people have shared their comments.

sore nipples

I also just got off of Depo-provera about 2 weeks ago and started back on the birth control pills. I know for me and my boyfriend, we have been together for 4 years. With that, we stopped using condoms when I was on Depo. However, right after I changed to the pills, we continued to have sex without a condom. Now my nipples are really sore. They're starting to feel somewhat better, but they still hurt if you touch them. I've been on Depo for 2 1/2 years now and have been okay. However, I'm not quite sure that it's okay to have sex without a condom while on the pills. Maybe the soreness might be the switching of hormones. Before we only get a shot every 12 weeks, now it's a pill everyday.....I hope I'm not pregnant either.

nipple soreness

so glad to hear that nipple soreness could be attributed to going off birth control. I went off in early sept. (after 11 years) and the nipple soreness seems to be during ovulation. hard, amazingly tender nipples are no fun. I wear a bra 24/7 because I can't stand having anything rub against them. I am hoping this will go away. It's awful. Like the pain you get when first nursing.

RE: Sore Nipples

You should get off of the depo as soon as possible. The depo is supposed to stop your period completly from coming down. If you are spotting then you need to stop the depo and go see your GYN. Also for your health and safety i recommend that you stop taking the depo shot completly. If you take the depo you are at higher risk of getting cancer within 5yrs of taking the shot.

I hope all goes well! :D
