Long Weekend Juice Fast

It is a long weekend here in Canada and I want to do a juice fast this weekend. Does anyone have any advice on what to do, what juices, what order, how long, what else to have? Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

It would probably be easier for people to give you advice if you stated what you wanted to get out of the fast.

Don't do it

A juice fast is not healthy and will just screw up your metabolism. What weight you do lose from it you will be sure to gain back once you start eating normally again.

yeah, i agree with the above. i think, although there are many commercial plans out there for such a thing, it's unadvisable unless a doctor/nutritionist is involved. your body needs more than sugar and the few vitamins that juice provide. i think a high fiber "diet" is better for cleaning out your system over the weekend-if that is your intent.

i'm not trying to preach here, just offering my opinion/support to help out. good luck and let us know what you decide to do, please.

Oh my goodness, fasting for 3 days isn't going to hurt you unless you're already ill, v. old or v. young, dehydrated, or malnourished. True, it might not do you much measurable good in terms of diet. But people have been doing short fasts for spiritual reasons for millenia.

most of the articles i've read (you can google fast/fasting) suggest consulting a doctor first. what is your goal in doing this?

Give it a rest!

I've done several juice fasts, none longer than three days, just to give my body a rest from constantly processing solid foods. I wouldn't look at it as a weight loss tool, although you will likely drop a few pounds.

For me, I found that freeing my mind of the concerns about what I was going to eat and when was pretty liberating. The time I gained in not eating and preparing food was pretty awesome! I also tend to get a big burst of energy the second day, which surprised me the first time. If you have a project to do, it's a great time to work on it, while the rest of your family is eating.

Make sure you DRINK LOTS OF WATER! Your body will likely be getting rid of some junk you have laying around and you really need the extra pure water to help stay on top of it and keep your energy up.

Lastly, have a good exit strategy in place. If you go from juice fasting to pizza, your body isn't likely to thank you. Try starting out with simple stuff. Veggies, brown rice, fruit and work your way out from there.

Good luck!

"give it a rest"
a bit rude. the op stated clearly that any help would be appreciated, and this is one posters way of trying to help. let the op decide what advise to take...

I didn't think the 'give it a rest' comment was supposed to be rude. I took it aswas 1:04 pm poster's way to put a heading on her comment, which began by saying she gives her body a rest when she does fasting. I think all the comments on this thread have been pretty helpful, giving pros and cons to the fasting idea.

go ahead and do a juice fast if you have reasons other than weight loss goals...if you goal is to lose weight, don't expect to keep it off.

LA Weight Loss Take Off

Hi there...

I am participating in the LA Weight Loss Plan and they have something called "Take Off" we are allowed to do every two weeks. It's for two days and you can do it with their juice or with cantelope or oranges. The basic plan with oranges is as follows - I'll be doing it Monday and Tuesday:

Breakfast:
1 orange
Unlimited protein (but limit eggs to 6 whole eggs in the course of the two days)
Unlimited GREEN vegetables

AM Snack
1/2 orange

Lunch: same as breakfast

PM Snack
1/2 Orange

Dinner: Same as Breakfast

Drink LOTS of water (at least 10 glasses)

I did this when I started the program (although I used the juice) and lost almost 4 pounds and have kept it off. I did follow the fast with portion control exercise and behavior modification.

Hey OP here...

I'd like to thank everyone for their input!

Special thanks to the last poster who posted the LA weightloss plan "take off" I plan on doing this. Is there any other options for oranges though? I'm not one for fruit, except apples and bananas. Do they offer a subsitution besides the juice? Thank you so much for taking the time to post!!!

The only other option I've seen is with cantelope, but I bet you could substitute 4 small apples for the oranges.

I'm through day one of two at this point and my advice is have lots of protein on hand and veggies. I drank at least 90 oz. of water today as well.

Hey OP!

After reading your comment about only eating apples and bananas, I have to ask if you take any additional phytonutrients? You aren't getting enough color in your diet, which is really important to cancer prevention and anti-aging. Do you prefer a lot of different vegetables? If your veggie cupboard looks like the fruit side, you might want to consider re-orienting your palate to encourage long-term health. It's amazing what you can grow to enjoy, if you make the choice to do so!

Best of health!

I actually really don't like fruit just apples pretty much. I am a huge eater of veggies. The plan that LA weight loss has is for 2 days. The rest of the week you eat anything else you normally would. From what I know and from what my doctor has said, 2 days will not affect your overall well being in the negative sense... Thank you for the concern!

Op here...

I did 2 day water fast and 2 days bits o food. It was amazing. I lost 5.7 ish pounds and I have kept it off .

One of the easiest things I've ever done. I didn't continue because I dont have access to fresh juice so it woulda been hard. No bad side affects whatsoever, but I did take psyllium fiber and bentonite clay to help with the colon stuff. I plan on doing a one day a week water fast and every other week the La Weight loss thing stated above! I love water so it was really good for me! I HIGHLY endorse doing it. Even my doctor does them.

Think of it this way... we used to be hunters... we went without eating for weeks. If you drink tons of water, you will have NO organ damage. Anyone who says there is damage among other negitive things, a) isn't drinking enough water, or b) probably didn't finish the whole thing and stopped when any bad affects happened. If one gets any pain it's because your body took out toxins and because it isn't coming out fast enough, it gets into your blood ( not as bad as it sounds) and then your body gets clean!

If anyone has any more questions ( sorry for the spelling btw) just post em here!

OP:
just wondering do you still work out regularly when you are doing this fast? and do you have enough energy? i would think working out would make you very hungr

Infact, I have not once hungry!!! Not even close to being hungry!! I did some light working out, I didn't do my normal work out as they say to just relax. If someone wanted to do this it would not affect your day to day life if you had work and or had to look after kids or something. My first day I was actually at work.

I have never felt more awake, refreshed and just alive really. And even now I still feel very awake and fresh! I couldn't imagine feeling this way after the fast, and I can't believe I thought I was feeling good before!!!

Any more questions?

Op here!

My 'exact' plan was this.

Stop eating at around 7pm on Thursday evening
Friday- an an empty stomach ( no water yet, had 1 table spoon bentonite clay in water ( no taste gets rid of toxins) then i drank water whenever I wanted. Make sure to have atleast 2 cups an hour to keep yourself full. Friday night I took 3 psyllium caps.
Saturday- Water water water water and more water... then 3 psyllium caps
Sunday- water water water until about mid afternoon. Then I ground some nuts and drank some organic soup broth. You could use juice, but aim for veggie juice as fruit juice can give you head aches.

Monday... water, light light foods, juices, soup broths.

Then take it sloooow adding new food. You may want to stuff your face but remember you probably arent hungry keep with the water and psyllium.

I found my colon was a little slow in functioning... by Thursday it was regular again ( well as in something was happening) make sure you get bentonite and psyllium because that will help with any side affects that could come up. You want to make sure those toxins don't get into your blood stream

I did not work out on this weekend. I just relaxed ran some light errands etc. Im pretty sure I could have, I felt better then ever actually, but I took er' easy for my first go.

I'm must say... consult your doctor before starting any fast and or juice diet.

Any more questions let me know :) I'm thinking of starting another fast tomorrow actually... I need to get going again!

The OP did their last one on or around June 29th.

I think the short term group is a great idea. 1 or 2 days will have benefits.

I will join if there is interest! I would urge people who don't "approve" of this method to keep their comments to themselves or another thread :)

Thank-you

this is just some further information for those thinking of trying a juice fast.

What is a juice fast?
There are many different types of fasts, but all involve the avoidance of solid foods for a period of time, usually 3 to 7 days. The most extreme form is the intake of water only.

Juice fasts include raw vegetable and fruit juices. They are often preferred to help maintain blood sugar levels and provide easily assimilated antioxidants and vitamins.

For fasts longer than three days or for intensive detoxification, a protein powder supplement with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients may help to support liver detoxification, and antioxidants to protect against free radicals generated during the detoxification process.

Who should not try a fast?
People with the following conditions should not fast unless under medical supervision:

Cancer

Diabetes

Heart disease

Eating disorders

Pregnant or lactating women

Children

Anemia

Underweight

Adrenal exhaustion

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Fibromyalgia

Weak immune system

Overworked and exhausted

Liver or kidney disease

Lowered immunity

Epilepsy

Ulcerative colitis

Low blood pressure

Before or after surgery

People with existing health conditions, poor health, or without fasting experience, should seek the supervision of a licensed naturopathic doctor or holistic practitioner.

I can honestly say that I really enjoy fasting. The benefits of even a 1 or 2 day fast can be seen for days weeks, sometimes months after. I agree people are a bit afraid to try this method but my doctor himself does them and he's the healthiest person I know!
